NAS for two camera home security (one being a doorbell)
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2025, 06:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am in the process of choosing a Synology NAS to support the use of Surveillance Station. Being new to the use of Surveillance cameras, I plan on using a doorbell and one WIFI camera to start (I do not have PoE wiring). Nor do I see the the need for extensive use of live feed notifications (at least currently). As I am entering this space, I am not sure what I may need/want in the future and choosing a system with expansion flexibility is important. Appreciate your advice. John

  Parent Folder(s)
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2025, 03:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I'm following the setup series for Synology NAS. This is for my family...2 parents, 1 working adult child, and 1 child at university. I'm working to get everything setup before adding them as users. I want to make it easy and thought having a single parent shared folder, call it WalkerNAS, and then put subfolders in as Plex, Photos, Documents, Backups, and Music. My reasoning is to have a single Mapped Network drive as opposed to 5 mapped drives. Is this a good way to setup for family usage?

Thank you!

  NAS build
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2025, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I would like to begin by introducing myself as a newbie to the NAS world.
I have been paying close attention to your YouTube channel for a while because of this.

I have been looking at ready-made NAS systems, however, have as you also have indicated found them a bit expensive and some time a bit limiting.

This leads me to the point where I would like your advice, regarding the motherboard for a NAS build.
I have seen the board with 6 Sata ports you sort of are recommending, however, the PC tower intended for the NAS build has 10 bays for hard drives.

After a bit of looking around I have found this motherboard 10 Sata;
https://th.aliexpress.com/item/1005007430821772.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2tha or

The primary query is if the board is too old, the CPU is too old, or a graphic card is required.

TrueNAS core will be used.

More info can be given about use.

Best regards,
Thomas

  Opinions, please - DIY Build
Posted by: KOSH42EFG - 01-15-2025, 06:38 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Firstly, Hi!

After opinions from knowledgeable people if you would be so kind.

Current server/NAS is AMD Ryzen 5 5560U based mini PC with 16GB RAM, internal NVME cache and one SSD, USB-C connected to DAS with HDDs. Not a fan as it feels flaky, one USB cable between working and nothing, and two bits kicking around. Also single 1G ethernet cable.

Was looking at an i3-N305 build, but this is a step down in terms of CPU grunt, not that I max the current one much but good to have options.

So comparable would be an i5-12450H build, but that's a minimal CPU gain, but three times the TDP. Which mounts up for 24/7.

So I'm now thinking that I go for two systems. I have the AMD and that's sunk costs. So I keep that with the NVME and put a mechanical 2.5 in there and call it my server for running Frigate (hence mechanical), home assistant, etc. Anything that needs some oomph.

Then the N305 build becomes the NAS. Hell, I could go N100 as workloads are low. This would be where the bulk storage sits, along with Jellyfin, etc. Can also be a backup Home Assistant server, where the main one writes backup to the NAS regularly so system restore is relatively fast.

These two CPUS still have less TDP than the i5.

Tell my why two systems will be a bad idea. The DAS will become a real backup to periodically sync to and give to a neighbour for offsite storage.

  Data transfer between 2 x 1821+
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-15-2025, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My PC and 2 x 1821+ are equipt with 10Gbit adapters via a unmagable 10Gbit switch.
Data transfer from pc to Nas 1 or NAS 2 is about 900MB/s that is what is shoul be.
But transferring between the 2 nasses or from the nasses to pc is about 250MB/s.
I checked many videos about optimal settings in DSM but still nothing helps.
What could possible be the case?
Nas 1 is with 6 x 16 TB in SHR2
Nas 2 is with 2 x 16TB, 2 x 8 TB and 4 x 4TB in SHR1

Posted by: Enquiries - 01-15-2025, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a 1512+ I'm looking to upgrade (I don't get security updates)

I want more safety. (more redundancy hot swap? I now have 1)
I want plex to run 4k easy.
I need room to backup foto's and video's. With easy management for sorting.
I also do a little editing. Would be nice if this can be done on the nas. Not a must. 4k

I want to use home assistant.
Maby a bit of virtual machine.

I have cat 6a at home.

Thank you for the help.

With regards Maikel

  DIY parts build recommendations..
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-14-2025, 11:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello Team,

Great platform you guys have here. Very appreciative for the support you provide to all of us.

Could you point me in the right direction. I'm looking to build a NAS and after lots of research, I need some assistance.

Use case:
- Store 10TB of existing photos and videos. We're onstantly adding more.

- Have remote access to be able to transfer photo and video whilecon vacation. Our devices (cell phones and sd cards) fill up quick.

- Be able to edit photos and videos from nas.

- Store Blue Iris recordings. Which is currently running on standalong HP workstation. With 2 nic cards. 14 cameras.

- Explore and experiment other features on the nas.

Currently, we have a Jonsbo N3.
Budget $400, not included drives. Based on research will (cpu) i3-12100 and (mobo) H610i be a good combo.

What hardware do you recommend?

Thanks.

Upgrading a NAS. Which brand? Which model? I can't get out for what I need now.
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-14-2025, 08:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to upgrade the Synology DS416Play to a future-ready NAS.
Photos, music and phonevideos.... everything plays in Plex, for all my devices, where I and my family can reach them. I immediately came up with the heaviest one currently available, the QNAP TVS-h874T-i9-64G.... but do I need this? I would love to, but do I need it? From this Synology, the processor is too minus and when analyzing or running multiple tasks at the same time, the server falters and fails as well. Up to a reboot. So analyzing, scanning and playback of 1080p and 4K must run extremely smoothly. The DS416Play is a 4-Bay. Internal storage of 4x 10TB WD102KRYZ. These drives I want to keep, fairly new. Also the 3x 14TB external drives dangling from it need to be on internal storage. So an 8-Bay and a heavy model should do the trick. Any recommendations of brands and models within the aforementioned price range?

nas for Google Photos and iCloud Photos local backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-14-2025, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have a TS-233 and using MARS to download 90k+ photos from google photos and upload to onedrive with hbs3. I am finding it clunky as it is uploading the hidden MARS folders to onedrive and blowing the storage, and viewing the photos with qmagie is really slow.
I am hoping to also backup about 5K iCloud Photos and make the local viewing a lot quicker and wonder if I need a more powerful nas that can run docker images or vm's to enable straight forward photo syncing from both cloud services?

Self build, qnap alternative for plex media server (transcoding)

Hi
Your channel is amazing, very descriptive, informative and just helpful in every way.

I cant tell you how nice it is to hear these tutorials on YouTube from a fellow Englishman as opposed to all the yanks out there Smile

I was wondering if you could help me put together a hardware list (pcpartpicker) for my new plex media server to service my family (10 people in total, usually on average 6 people utilising in one go) as well as a network storage for sharing files and backup in my small home office with 2 additional people having to access at any one point locally

I would like the system to run docker for other work needs (testing and sandpit environments)

I was looking at something similar to the QNAP TVS-H874-I9-64g
I know its a 3.5k machine

However i was wondering if you believe possible to get similar performance from a custom build keeping pricing below 1500£

If yes what would be your selected parts (would you reckomend IPMI, hot swap, intel, integrated graphics etc )
