| Home NAS for storing (not serving) media, photos and more |

Hi guys, first of all thanks for this and love the channel.
I'm looking for a NAS for my home network. I don't need the NAS to be able to run containers and other fancy stuff, as I will be using a mini PC to stream movies (from the NAS storage) or host a photo gallery app
Since my home network is primarily in the Unifi ecosystem (Dream Machine SE, two Wifi6 APs, switches), my first thought was the Unifi UNAS, but the 10Gbe feels like overkill to me as I plan to start with 3.5 HDDs and grow from there, and spinning disks will probably be a bottleneck anyway, plus the home network is currently 1Gb.
Now I saw the Lincstation S1 on crowdfunding and it sounds like an interesting alternative
Basically, I want something future-proof to store my files, but also media I want to stream from another machine, without breaking the bank by starting with a hard drive and gradually growing from there

Hi, I'm looking to get my first NAS. Will be used as an easy to access data backup for me and my wife's home PCs and phones. My current plan is to get something like a 4 bay NAS, but only use two slots initially in a RAID1 config. Then use the couple of external hardrives which we are currently using as offsite backups for the most precious files by keeping them at the in-laws.
I also have some interest in using it as a Plex server and potentially hosting a minecraft server on it for me and a couple of mates. However, if these start to drive the cost too much, then they aren't hard requirements.
I have had a look and whilst I want it to be future proofed, I dont' want to spend money I don't need to. Would be interested to see what you recommend.
Have been looking at something like a Synology DS923+ (maybe a bit pricey for the hardware?) or the QNAP TS264 (I didn't like some of the comments I have seen about security issues).
Look forward to your response.
Tom

Hi, been checking out all your videos and find the content really good. I have been rocking a Synology DS413j for a long time with 4 X WD Red WD40EFRX disks that are still in very good condition.
But the performance is terrible and I am biting the bullet and replacing it.
I short I want it all, 4-6 X SATA bays plus at least 2 internal M.2 slots Gen 4X4, Intel graphics for Transcoding, CPU and Memory for some VM's, 10GBe running Unraid. I can decide between a mini PC with a qnap disk stack connected via Oculink :-) or USB4 :-( or just doing a Josnbo DIY build, or holding out for some newer devices this year. Don't want to replace my 4 X 4TB disks with NVMe (too expensive atm)

Hi community, I need some help to decide what to buy.
I am a bit spooked by the reviews stating that the ADM interface compared to DSM and the mobile apps are unpolished and outdated compared to the Synology siblings.
I have a Synology DS1513+ running since 10 years without much trouble so far connected to a UPS.
But looking at the current Synology models and the company approach pisses me off a bit. They are pushing people to buy their own branded drives, lacking flexibility I would expect from a NAS.
What would be the most accurate equivalent or better model than the DS1522+ with possibility to upgrade to 10 Gbps networking in the future and good ECC RAM?
I was also thinking on the TrueNas / unRAID approach, but I honestly dont want to spend so much time managing my NAS, I just want the thing to work well primarily for file sharing and endure a long time.
I already purchased a Mini PC a Beelink SEi with a 12th gen processor, 32 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD where I plan to run ProxMox and some VM´s so the most CPU hungry things should be out from this device.
I already purchased some components taking advantage of some deals.
I already got: 2x Seagate EXOS 20 TB drives and 1 Samsung QVO SATA SSD 8 TB.
What are your thoughts on my situation?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Hi, I'm a veterinarian so a bit of a techno-peasant. I am trying to find an NAS that is easy to set up and use without having to be terribly computer literate. I do a lot of teaching and need storage mainly for videos and presentations. I need to organize a lot of videos and pictures. I get hung up when looking at setting up the system and knowing what works best for backup. I barely understand Parity, Pool and Array. I would prefer to only use SSD (combination of 2.5" SATA drives and NVME). I lost a hard drive years ago and still have PTSD from that. I was looking at the LinkStation NI and Terramaster F4 424 Pro. I'm not concerned about size or noise. I am very willing to pay for a consult with you guys if you can help guide me. I really get lost in all of the tech talk on the forums. Basically, I need it explained to me like you would to your great grandma. Thanks in advance. Sean

Hoping you can help with best NAS to get:
• NAS will be in a quiet living room, so drive/fan noise is a big issue.
Currently I have an iMac connected to a number of hard drives, which I've slowly over the years been swapping from HDDs to SSDs, which has definitely made things much better. A faint fan hum is not the end of the world, but definitely hearing disk drives clicking and whirrling is a big problem. Does Qnap tbs-h574tx make too much noise even with heat sink attachments??
• I require a pretty large amount of storage. I'd ideally like something like an Asus Flashstor 12 Pro because at absolute bare minimum I'd want 24TB (formatted) of space and ideally a bunch more than that for expansion as in the ideal world I'd like this to be partly for media center and partly for work files (video editing and animation sequences).
• Of critical importance is for this NAS to be a top notch ROON server. I'll also use Plex as well.
• want 10gbps ethnt & good USB or Tbolt connect.

I currently have a 5 bay synology nas DS1019+ with 16gb of ram. I bought the jonsbo n5 case to build my forever Nas for PLEX and data storage. With my current setup I am having transcoding issues as about 10 people have access to my current server. looking to build a powerful nas with low to moderate power consumption. I was watching your video about not using itx motherboard in n5 case and information is so confusing about witch motherboard / processor to use. Any assistance would be apricated. thank you for your time

In your 2024 QNAP setup guide part 1 you say that you would be doing a later part covering adding additional hard drives to the NAS.
Did you ever do that and if so which part as I've been unable to find it?
Many thanks and thank you for all the very helpful videos that you've put out there

Hi
This is abrham, new to the help desk position. I was assigned to look for NAS to replace the current server we have with the following specs:
PowerVault NX3230
"Processor: Intel v3 1.9 GHz
RAM: 2*8GB RDIMM 2133MT/s
Hard Drive: 2*300GB SAS
PERC H730 / RAID 1
5*2TB NLSAS
PERC H730 / RAID 5
Network Adapter: 1*Broadcom 5720 1 Gb"
The new NAS should be more redundant and has to have a 10GB LAN network card.
Thank you in advance.

hi, I am now on my 3rd QNAP, from a 2-bay, to a TS-453A and now a TS-464, kindly reccomended by your good selves. I work from home so use it for everything, backing up my work files on the fly, Roon server, download server, and Plex. I have 3x 14Tb drives in RAID 5, 2x 2Tb SSD's running apps, and a spare 1Tb SSD on expansion card for the Roon database.
I upgraded to QUTS Hero believing it would speed things up, but the interface is EXTREMELY slow. I know I am asking a lot of it, but it is unusable at times. I tried to use the SSD's as a cache but read it was pointless, I upgraded to 32Gb of RAM, but that's not made much difference, and I'm now just thinking the processor isn't up to it.
My TS-453A is an older model, but I don't think it was this bad, so I am just asking for some advice - should I cut my losses and go for a bigger QNAP, or an Asustor AS6804T, or stick with it and figure out the problem? I just don't think it is up to the job.
I'd really appreciate your help. thanks
