Toshiba N300 Pro in Synology DS224+
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-30-2024, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My Synology DS224+ is used as a Plex server - both drives are basic setup. I have noticed that the Toshiba N300 Pro products are not on Synology DS224+ Compatibility list but the Toshiba N300 products are. The pricing for Toshiba N300 Pro is very attractive in my area. Are there any concerns if I use the Toshiba N300 Pro series in the DS224+? Particularly I am thinking of using the 14TB size drive. Your video showed that drives not on the Compatibility List can work just as well. I appreciate your thoughts on this matter. Thank you.

Hyper backup restore from 4 bay nas to 2 bay / drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-30-2024, 03:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Ive got a 4 bay Synology DS423+ and use hyperbackup to backup the nas to an external 10TB drive. Ive currently got 4 x 4TB drives in the NAS running in SHR, and only use less than 1tb in total of that capacity.
Could i do a Hyperbackup restore from the external 10TB drive using just 2 of the 4TB drives that are in their at the minute?, allowing me to use the other 2 x 4TB drives then in another NAS
Thanks in advance for your help

  M2 NVME upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-30-2024, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I have a Synology DS1621xs+ on 10gig with 80TB of RAID 5 Seagate Exos drives. My main use is 4K video editing and Plex streaming. Is it worth buying an M2 NVME drive for read write caching? If so, what is the optimum size?

I have enjoyed watching the NAS review videos on YOUTUBE and have seen probably about 100 or so by now. These are great! by the way. I have a question that is of concern before committing to a NAS device. I was burned by purchasing a NETGEAR STORA device to use as external storage. To get access to the device through the web requires logging onto the NETGEAR servers. Apparently, this function is no longer supported and my STORA is now a brick. I am looking at the TERRAMASTER 424 or maybe the SYNOLOGY 423. Am I going to be burned by the same issue if these companies go offline? I hesitate to buy because of this and cannot find anything addressing this issue in any of the videos.

  Topton 'micro' sata cable
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-28-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
I'm reaching out because I saw in one of your videos about Topton mini PCs that you're using a specific type of SATA cable that fits a unique port. I'm interested in purchasing two of these cables for my own Topton mini PC.
Unfortunately, when I contacted Topton, they weren't able to provide specific information on where to buy these cables or the correct technical term for them.
I was wondering if you could possibly share any information you may have about these cables, such as where to purchase them or the correct terminology to use when searching online.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Best regards,
Blażej

Synology NAS VS MiniPC with DAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-28-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to implement a home NAS solution, only used locally.
I want to have (1) family mobile phones back up photos on it, (2) be able to store and share documents, and (3) store and stream movies/tv shows to local area network devices (wired and wireless).

I was wondering if its worth buying the Synology DS723+ VS buying a N200/i3 1220p mini-PC and attaching a DAS to it. I am worried about (1) ease of deployment/config, (2) supported apps to do the 3 things above, and (3) safety (hacks/attacks).

Anything helps! Thank you

  NAS selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-28-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I love your channel, I have been looking at buying a NAS for a long time and I really cannot seem to select a single unit as there is so many considerations.

My main uses are to setup a plex server, and store all of my holiday photos and videos which are currently stored in the cloud.

I have been looking at Synology DS1621+, but I am concerned of the hardware limits.

I would prefer a Synology unit, but I am open to

QNAP: Use of Smart Import and TMDB
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-28-2024, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
I have an external drive that I use as the System-of-Record for all my digitized media (movies and music). I do have a folder structure defined to support movies, shows, and specials (as an example) and after digitizing a set of DVDs/Blu-Rays/CDs, I use the 1-Touch Copy (Smart Import) to get them backed up to the QNAP TS-464 with another sync job ready when I'm done for a 3rd location. After having done 35-40% of my movies, I started to configure the Multimedia Console suite (TMDB for movies and TV shows). And noticed an oversight on my part...I have tried looking for an answer online but it has been tricky. Is there a way to get the Smart Import folders "unraveled" to the original structure instead of by date so that I can get it to play nicely with the TMDB extensions. If I have to start over that is fine, but I couldn't even find a way to do this if I hadn't started digitizing.

Thanks in advance,
A knowledgeable yet still newbie to QNAP fellow Smile

  Replacement Drive
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-28-2024, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a QNAP TVS 672N with 6x Seagate Ironwolf Pro 18Tb drives running in RAID 5. One of the disks has a warning coming up in QTS indicating bad sectors. I have been to SCAN and they are saying delivery of a new drive may not be until Feb '25. B&H Photo is saying these disks are discontinued. Is putting an EXOS 18Tb drive in as a replacement an option? Alternatively, I could put in a 20Tb (or higher) drive and gradually increase the capacity of my NAS as disks get to end of life (not sure I want to do this as I would expect to replace the NAS in 3 - 5 years) which might be sensible if 18Tb is no longer a capacity that Seagate supports going forward and I may need to buy other replacement drives in the short to medium term.

Input most welcome and thanks in advance.
