  NAS recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2025, 12:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Smile
A bit lost here, all i need is a NAS where I will store my Bluray library and share that using SAMBA or whatever protocol KODI supports, no transcoding needed.
It would be great to host a Wireguard server.
I need to keep it stupid, simple, compact, reliable and cheap.
I'll keep reading on and learning from your website until you come across my message.
All the best and thanks again !

  Best Nas motherboard
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2025, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

im looking for a motherboard(formfactor doesnt matter) that has 6-8 SATA connectors, plenty of power to run Jellyfin immich and some more docker containers. 1-2 m.2 connectors and a nice to have would be a pcie-e slot. IPMI of BMC would be nice but is not a priority. planning to run TRUENAS on it so im going to need a lot of ram.

most of all it needs to be very power efficient, i live in the EU and eletricity is not cheap so something that draw lesss then 30W. I know that the amount of hard drives, pcie cards,... are also going to change the power draw but if the motherboard doesnt have a good pcie power management its inefficient and cant go to lower c states.

what motherboards would you recommend?

  First NAS questions
Posted by: sneak - 01-19-2025, 06:34 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (4)

I'm currently using my computer (which was never purchased with this intent) to host a Plex server. Everything I have is on a single 4TB HDD (HUS726T4TALA6L4). I keep running out of space and have even copied some files over to one of my EX950 SSDs for a bit. I've been wanting to setup a NAS for a while and looking around at options for years now. I have really valued the videos and text content from NasCompares as well. Currently, I'm able to stream over Wifi 6 to my Hisense U8K in the living room without problem via Direct Play on Plex. My PC has a Ryzen 3900X and 16-16-16-36 3600 Mhz RAM.

A higher bitrate file example from my collection is below:
I'm looking to start off with a 4-bay NAS and two 8 TB HDDs (edit: can't post a link so I'd like to note I'm referring to the 8 TB HUS728T8TALE6L4). I'd like to avoid purchasing Plex Pass but in the future I may be willing to do so. I don't really have a need for transcoding, provided the NAS will get the job done as good or better than my PC does. I will almost always be using this to play things myself on my TV on my own network -- but it's nice to have the option to stream remotely. I'm currently using a Hitron CODA56 modem and ASUS RT-AX58U router. I intend on upgrading the router this year to one which supports WiFi 6E and has 2.5 GbE support. Keeping in mind that the drives I'm buying are $340 for two, and I'd like to buy a small UPS for $50-75 for the NAS, it would be nice to keep the NAS around $450-500. I REALLY like the Lincstation N1, but I can't really budget for all those NVME M2 drives in the size I'm looking for.

Considering that, I've recently been taking a look at the following options:
$500 TERRAMASTER F4-424 (8 GB DDR5, N95 CPU, 2x 2.5 GbE)
$529 Asustor AS5404T (N5105, 4 GB DDR4, 2x 2.5 GbE)
$552 TERRAMASTER F4-424 PRO (N305, 16GB DDR5, 2x 2.5 GbE) *
$557 QNAP TS-464-8G-US (4 GB DDR4, N5095 or N5105, 2x 2.5 GbE)

* After making this post I hit play on a video tab I had in queue from Nas Compares and found this NAS has a coupon on Amazon right now making it $52 more than the non-pro version.

It seems like to me the major differences for my use case may be a preference for software and physical design, and what I want the M2 NVME slots to be capable of.

Am I missing any options I should be considering? Are any of these not a wise choice for my needs? Is there a way I can get what I want at a lower price? In this case I'm only interested in purchasing from Amazon, for various reasons. My experience level is above average with experience running servers and websites, building computers, troubleshooting on Windows and linux/unix based systems, and very light work in code. It shouldn't be an obstacle if I have to do something extra, but I would prefer a simple point and click experience I can just setup and use as a Plex server.

Help me pick 2 larger HDD's for DS723+
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-18-2025, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi!

I have found your youtube videos so helpful. Thanks! I hope the new year is treating you and yours well.

I have a question about selecting HDD's for my newly purchased DS723+.

First a bit of background:

I got the nas a few days ago, installed 32gb ram (2x Crucial RAM 16GB DDR4 CT16G4SFRA32A) and two NVME drives (WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 NVMe WDS100T3X0E).

I also installed two of these hdds:

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B084ZTSMWF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
(Seagate IronWolf 12TB ST12000VNZ008)

The system would not work (could not install DSM). So I tried using just one HDD, and it worked. Then I added the other drive (after a reboot) and it would not boot. So, I went ahead with one drive, assuming the other was DOA. However, the first drive eventually failed and went into read only after about 3 hours operating.

I returned those drives.

Next, I was able to reset and reboot the system and setup DSM again, with this old 2tb HDD I had laying around:

  NAS SELECTION
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-18-2025, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

Can I just say I have watched a lot of your youtube videos before typing this. They have been very helpful.

I am looking for my 1st NAS, a 2-bay which I can put 2 drives in and run a raid configuration. I have well under 1tb of data.

The primary reason for buying a NAS is to back up the thousands (40,000) of travel photos I have and some book drafts that I have done. I also would like to be able to sync photos to a NAS whilst I travel. That's it really.

So far I have found 3 options which seem to fit my budget and needs

-Synology DS223J
-Synology ds223
-Asustor Drivestor 2 Pro AS3302T

I just wanted to ask:

1.If you have an opinion on which of these 3 offers best value for money, for my purposes?
2.If you suggested any better options than those, for my purposes?

I really appreciate your time.

All the best,

Chris

  Moving from EX2 Ultra
Posted by: darrix - 01-17-2025, 10:09 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, for the last few years I've used a basic WD EX2 Ultra with 2x4TB drives.  I need to increase the storage now and WD indicates that to do this I also need a 48W power supply.  Fine--however, they will give me the specs for it but they don't sell the power adapter now and are unwilling to give me the MFG and part number so I can simply buy it outright from another vendor.  So, first question:  does anyone here know the MFG and part number for this adapter (which they included with the 0 drive or gt 10TB drive units)?  I can use the specs but I'd be more secure using something they've tested for the box.

Second question:  this has started me thinking that I'd rather have a better NAS and I've been looking at your channels videos and I'm thinking about either the QNAP TS-464-8G-US 4 Bay or the UGREEN DXP4800 Plus because I have Docker needs (databases, etc) that I think might be well handled by this.  The UGREEN seems superior in that the RAM can be expanded and the processors are pretty new.  The QNAP has the advantage of superior software but it doesn't appear as if the RAM can be expanded.  Is that a fair understanding of the differences?

Thanks much

I work for a university in the US, running daily video operations in our auditorium. This involves recording our ISO feeds from each of our cameras, editing past events (events happen daily), and a miscellany of other storage-intensive tasks. I inherited a NAS from my predecessor two years ago, which has been a workhorse for video editing, collaboration, and data management (specs above). We also love its ability to sync files to the cloud as a backup (in our case Microsoft), but unfortunately, we’re losing cloud storage from Microsoft sometime in the summer,. I’m working on preparing us for when the day comes.
We’re currently using around 70 TB, which remains fairly steady since we also back up old content to data tape. That gives us 23.5 TB of fre

  My first NAS! Backup strategy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-17-2025, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey guys!

Setup:
I purchased my very first NAS - a DS923+ with compatible 2x 8TB HDDs.

Background:
The purpose of this NAS is to simply backup files from my Google Drive to the NAS in one direction i.e. changes in Google Drive should update in the NAS but NOT vice versa. Also, any files deleted in Google Drive should NOT be deleted in the NAS. For reference, the files are updated often. I do not need to see the NAS on the network etc.

Question:
Should I set up cloud-sync to do a one-way sync and/or should I set bidirection cloud-sync with snapshots?

Any advice or YT links would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

  SMART and data scrubbing schedule
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-16-2025, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have a DS923+ with WD Red Plus HDD (2x4 TB and 2x10 TB). I am trying to understand a best practice for how frequently to schedule SMART tests (short and long) and data scrubbing tasks. A quick web search reveals quite a bit of what people do, but no discussion of why they choose to test daily, weekly, monthly, or whatever. Do you have any guidance based on analysis or experience? I tried a chat with WD, but with little help.
