Can I speed up Plex performance with SSD cache?
Posted by: Martin - 02-27-2020, 08:35 AM - Forum: Home Multimedia - Replies (1)

Many thanks for all your great video's on NAS selection, it was a great input for my current selection in replacing my DS710+ as it is getting really slow on resources now that I found PLEX as my new multimedia center.
Based on your video's, your enthusiasm and as I'm very happy with the current Synology, I want to buy myself the DS918+.

The question I have is on the two optional M.2 NVMe 2280 SSDs that you can add to this NAS. Do you recommend this from the start and if so, what would be the best size (and brand?) for these SSD's?

Many thanks & keep up the great work to help folks like myself choose the best NAS device for their situation.

  What is NAS?
Posted by: ed - 02-24-2020, 10:19 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

NAS is virtually a network-attached hard drive. Instead of plugging it into your computer, it is accessible over the network or even internet just like Dropbox. It is usually having two or more drives inside the case and it protects your data even if one or more drives get broken. Kind of magic, but it is called RAID protection.Sound encrypted, I know. But in human language it means:RAID1 - two disks mirroring each other, if one gets damaged other still has a copy of your dataRAID5 - also a single disk failure protection. For 3 or more disks.RAID6 - two disk failure protection. For 4 or more disks.

Synology Ethernet/Internet sharing via aditional LAN?
Posted by: ed - 12-31-2018, 09:13 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

How to Set Up Synology in the way i want. For instance; My model 1621s+
I want to connect an Ethernet cable from my router to my Synology, and then I would like to take another Ethernet cable and connect it to my PC from that Synology NAS to continue sharing the internet. In simple words: Home Router -> Synology NAS-> to PC in order to have both internet and direct connection between my PC and NAS.
How to use NAS to get the Internet to my PC with using an additional switch?
