  What Nas should i consider?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I need a NAS to have a folder shared on my private network, so that i can access all videos, photos and music that i have on all devices.
I usualy use Kodi for this
For now i share a hard drive from my desktop pc, but i need to have it always on, and i would like to have another solution
I considered qnap ts-230, but i now see it doesnt support Kodi?
I have android tv's so the Kodi would run on the tv, not on NAS

Want to make the right decision on a NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

Firstly, thank you so much for your YouTube channel. Your videos are incredibly helpful.

My wife and I run a small kitchen design business. We are mostly located at home but also have a small design studio located approximately 2 miles from our house. Obviously, during lockdown, we haven't spent much time in the design studio. This will change as restrictions ease.

Whilst I'm pretty tech savvy, networking is a struggle at home. We tend to pass files between us on a memory stick due to me being unable to get my wife's PC laptop to display on the home network. It's for this reason that I've rejected NAS drives in the past.

However, we are about to take on our first employee, who will work from home.

So we need a solution to share files between:

Our house
The design studio
Employee's house

I'm at a loss as to which NAS to go for (or just take out a DropBox subscription for the three of us).

The Synology DS920+ looks to be a good option. I'm thinking 2x 6tb drives set to RAID 1 for safety. I like the expandability but this is an expensive investment.

This will be mostly for file sharing between staff. But could also be used for domestic computer storage, PLEX and possibly surveillance cameras (currently paying for Google NEST subscription).

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

If I decide to go ahead, can I purchase all of the items through you?

Regards,

Mike.

Home NAS for sharing files with family in Europe?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am looking to get my first NAS
It is for my home; the idea is that I can stream my files to my TV while also sharing with my family at home in Europe

I want to get a DS920+ and some HDs

I need advice on which HDs to get - Seagate seem the best, but Synology also do their own, and I don't know which might be best

My concerns are my limited tech knowledge in assembling a system like this from scratch
And also being able to set up a network where I can stream Plex to my TV, as if my NAS were just another service

Apologies if these questions are super basic

Thanks

--Sean

  NAS advice?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

First thanks for your blog, it is really amazing.

I was wondering if you could help me make a decision. I need a NAS for mainly professional use.

My idea is to host all my data on the NAS (installed in my office) and have a network drive constantly mapped to the office computer. Also, I would need to be able to map the network drive from my home PC from often.

In principle I would be the unique user, except for specific moments.

A RAID 1 would be sufficient for my needs.

My work does not require high speed but it is true that from time to time I need to open large files constantly ~ 100Mb.

I've been reading and I think that the QNAP software is more suited to my profile because it is more customizable, I have some computer skills without becoming an expert, of course.

Do you have any model recommended for me?

Thanks for your help,
Best regards,
Alberto

Is it possible to upgrade to 16gb RAM for DS416play ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Greetings,

I'd like to upgrade my DS416play to 16gb RAM. I know you tested it already for 8gb RAM cf : https://nascompares.com/ram/ds416play-ram-upgrade/ ). But I'd like to know for certain if I can go for 1x16Gb directly.

Though, those are hard to find for Belgium => "16GB Crucial CT204864BF160B 16 GB (DDR3L, 1600 MT/s, PC3L-12800, SODIMM, 204-Pin) Memory", I'll try to find an offer, if I find out for sure that it will be compatible. Maybe 16gb is to much ? And I'll should go with 8 gb ?

Thank you for your help,

Warm regards,

Jean D.

  Aquiring First NAS ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a NAS.
After long consideration and watching some of your videos again I thought of buying the ds1621+, but... when I enquired about a NAS at a local store they said the ds620slim would be better suited because of the streaming software on it and the pricerange.

I don't know what to do, what to get. Maybe you could help with some advice.

What do I need it for:
- Picture library
- file server(documents, excell files, photoshop and aftereffects files/projects,...)
- we have a big dvd/bluray collection to ingest, family/vacation videos(possibly editing-if possible on NAS with the rpm restrictions 5400rpms)
- iTunes media storage. I want to use it to save the library on so I can access it by computer without needing to attach a external hdd to my laptop.
- We'd like the possibility to watch the videos on our flatscreen tv, tablets, laptop,... I looked at Plex. Looks good but the clerck at the store told me that synology has a streaming app of its own. on iOS it does not get a lot of points.

I watched your test video on the ds1621+ with 4K material. I don't know if we'd have video with 200Mbps bitrate.

about the storage capacity.
I was first looking at 4TB drives but that seems less and less an option if I count the load of ext drives I have at home. we already have around 6-7TB worth of matrial to store/transfer without the dvd/bluray collection. Are 'PRO' drives nescessary or are basic nas drives enough?

I looked at a 6 bay to use RAID6. I like the peace of mind of the security of 2 discs redundancy.

knowing all this. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this, because it has been a hell of two weeks looking into this.

best regards and really looking forward to your thoughts
