How quiet is the WD140EFFX (WD Red Plus 14TB)?
Posted by: GainfulShrimp - 11-26-2020, 10:11 AM - Forum: NAS Accessories - Replies (1)

I currently use 8 x WD30EFRX (WD Red 3TB CMR) from circa 2012. They are whisper quiet in my DS1812+ and - even during data scrubbing and high load - the noise isn't intrusive at all in my office.
I'm looking to get a new 8bay Synology NAS (either DS1819+ or DS1821+) and would like it to be similarly quiet if possible... so I'm wondering if the newer, giant-capacity drives are still as quiet?
I've heard the Seagate IronWolfs are both noisier and harsher in sound/tone, especially under load, so I'm avoiding those (but happy to be corrected if I've got heard wrong about them, of course).

Size and number of hard drives for new 4 bay NAS?
Posted by: Slush - 11-26-2020, 12:25 AM - Forum: NAS Accessories - Replies (3)

I am planning on buying a DS920+ for home and business use. I run a software consulting business from home. Typically only 2 people will access the NAS and our storage needs are low (no plex, video, or surveillance needs). I chose the DS920+ as an investment in something that is scalable that I won't need to upgrade for a long time. (Tell me if I should reconsider this.)
Considering I currently have low storage needs, what is the best strategy for hard drive selection? Do I populate all 4 bays with hard drives or only 2 or 3 bays? What size do I buy- the largest I can afford? Do I buy the same size for all hard drives or maybe 1 large and 2 smaller sizes? Ideally, I spend no more than $600 USD (around the same price as the NAS) for hard drives. How do I best allocate this?

QNAP TVS-872XT Capacity increase and RAID Migration from 5 to 6 Upgrade Order?
Posted by: alexwalker.photo - 11-24-2020, 07:40 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (1)

In my QNAP TVS-872XT, I have four 16 TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration. I am going to add two more drives to this and am looking to increase the storage and migrate to RAID 6 too.

Is there a preferred/optimal way to do this? e.g.
1) add one drive then migrate to RAID 6, following on from that add the second drive to increase the storage capacity?
2) upgrade the capacity, then the RAID level?
3) Can they both be done at once? I'm not even sure that is possible.

I'm thinking that the first option of the RAID migration followed by the expansion might be safest?

What do people think? Any comments or suggestions will be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Alex.

NAS selection help - picture browsing is essential?
Posted by: vladio2000 - 11-19-2020, 12:14 PM - Forum: NAS Accessories - Replies (1)

Picture browsing is my priority, my wife would like just to grab an android phone and just browse pictures, videos, etc. Key factor is also price, a 2 bay device should be fine. The device needs to be able to be configured without an online server to be present ( got a Netgear stora, that cannot be configured, as it is trying to access a netgear server which is off ). So far, I found qnap TS230 as a viable option, please chip in with experience, bad or good about it or any similar device.
Thanks in advance,
Vlad

Qnap Red Light Flashing - continued topic?
Posted by: muniek12 - 11-16-2020, 12:03 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (1)

Dear Experts,

Some time ago there was a post on Q&A Forum about status LED flashing
https://nascompares.com/answer/qnap-red-...-solution/
In the article there was statement "If it doesn’t boot, you will need to come back to me.".....sooo I come back.

I have QNAP 453B, after firmware update the NAS is "dead".
Status LED if flashing (color red, period 2sec).
The HDD drive's are plugged out.
There is no beep signal.
Fan is not rotate (I disconnected the fun plug and connect the fan to external power supply - fun is working).
If needed I can replace the FAN to new one. But before firmware update he works fine (software update damaged him? I don't think so.)

What do you think? Is there any option to bring the NAS alive?

DS1621+ vs DS1520+ for media playback?
Posted by: bstubbs - 11-10-2020, 09:02 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have watched lots of your videos on the DS920+ (as you don't have some of the Plex and video station review reviews for the DS1520+) and the DS1621+trying to figure out which one is the best for watching movies and dealing with bigger, denser files, including 4K HEVC. I can't seem to figure out which NAS will be best. While the Celeron chip on the DS1520+ seems like it would be better as it has a little GPU capabilities on the CPU, the AMD Ryzen is a beefier chip and seems to come off better on your videos even though it is doing software transcoding on HEVC.

The price difference between the 2 NAS's isn't an issue (happy to pay more for the DS1621+). But which one is the better NAS for video playback (Plex and Video Station), especially at 4K HEVC?

Also, if I go for the DS1621+, would a RAM upgrade or NVMEe SSD for cacheing help with video playback?

  QNAP Future Migration?
Posted by: jfradette - 11-08-2020, 06:13 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi!

About a year ago I bought a QNAP 431P to be used for home network storage. Little did I know how versatile this device was going to be. I actually have ended up using it to replace an old file server and home theatre PC. The bad part of this is that while the 431P does a pretty good job of file serving it's kind of under-powered to used as a full fledged Plex server plus run cameras and other tasks simultaneously.
I've been looking at the TS-873 as a migration path but know very little about the AMD processors. Is this a decent future proof-ish version to look at for a power home user? I like the expansion capabilities of this model. M.2, add-on network or graphics card, 4 x memory slots, etc. It seems very modular.
Any advice would be appreciated.
