QNAP 453Be pre-purchase question: noise? |

Hi. I have watched several of your videos, all of which have been very informative.
I was about to pull the trigger on the purchase of a QNAP 453Be which is meant to replace a Dlink 320L, which apart from being old, slow and lacking plex integration is very noisy. The device sits on my desk and the tiny fan spins along all day and night and i find it very annoying.
So the 453Be was meant to replace that until I checked the web for any comments on it being noisy, and people do seem to be complaining about that.
Just wanted to get an idea about your experience with this NAS and its noise level. I initially plan to put in 3 WD reds (3tb) and scale up when finance permits.
Reviews talk about it running 35db in idle and 46db on load. I am worried that this NAS could potentially be as loud or even louder than the 320L. I can't find data on the 320L to check what the noise level might be, but I am worried about proceeding with this purchase now. I suppose I don't need it to be whisper quiet (I know that's not possible given the fan etc) but I don't want to purchase something which will be worse than what I already have.
Your advice and comments are very much appreciated

Hi!
So I work for a small company and we just bought a custom Synology ds1819 in order to store all the video footage that we record. I'd like to find out if there is software out there that I can use in tandem with our NAS in order to log our footage in a way that we can bulk tag files, as well as have the ability to search let's say, "apple" and have all the footage we've tagged "apple" come up. Also if we'd be able to preview video files without having to download them, that would be ideal.
I called Synology support and they said that they currently don't have anything like that, so I was hoping to find software out there that can do it instead. I just don't know what to even google to find this kind of program.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense or if this is not the place to ask. Please let me know when you can, thank you!

SSD Cache Pcle v Sata? |

I've just bought a QNAP TS 673 and want to set up a dedicated Plex server with 2 of the drives. - It has 4 WD Red Pro 6Tb and 2 WD Red Pro 8Tb
I was thinking that using SSD(s) for cache acceleration might be a good idea as might a graphics card.
Please can you advise
1. Will ssd's be beneficial for my usage
2. Is it better to use the 2 inbuilt M2 SATA slots or use a QNAP PCLe expansion which takes 2 SSD'slots and also adds 10Gb ethernet
3. What size SSD's should I use and how many
4. Is it worth adding a Video card and if so which do you recommend
Thanks
Martin

Upgrade from DS216j? |

Hi,
First thanks for you site, great stuff!
I own a DS216J with 2x8T in raid1. I ram rather happy with it.
it does everything I need it to if not that quickly...
It is completely full, I have added about 4T of media in about 2y
I need an upgrade.
Usage:
We are an Apple family
We are not power users! 95% is local usage rarely remote access.
80% media storage essentially 1080p content but 4k is coming.
the media is served to the iPads Macs and an Apple TV4k (MrMMC, port of Kodi ) as well as a Sony Smart TV (Kodi)
15% back up of portables devices (2 iPhones, 3 MacBooks, 3 iPads).
5% download
5G is coming fast so we might want to remotely stream and with 4k also coming it might be worth the effort to build for this usage case.
Although I believe that anything passed the j model from Synology will do just fine for this purpose.
The DSx20x seem to be no show for this year and I cannot wait for next year.
so should I
a. Keep the DS216j, buy a pair of HDD 12T or 14T and see in 2y what’s available?
It seems easy to upgrade I believe just pop a new HDD in one bay and keep a 8T in the other,
rebuild the array and pop the second one in to complete the upgrade?
b. Buy a 4 bay NAS for the next 5 years?
- better use the two 8T and add 2 12/14T HDD and build a hybrid array?
- scrap everything and go for 4 12/14T? how do I migrate?
What should I buy?
If we invest in a new NAS I'll definitely go for a 4 bay.
DS420j? Cheap essentially a larger DS216J but still no transcoding…
If I invest in a transcoding capable NAS I need it to be 4k@60fps, HDR etc capable or it just not worth the trouble and it won’t be future proof enough.
DS418 vs DS418play despite the media oriented play version the specs look like the DS418 support 4k@60fps and the DS418play doesn’t?
Qnap? price here are the same but the HDMI looks interesting for 4k but its seem that Kodi is not officially supported, any feedback?
Thanks for your site and your advices
