The 2 bay Qnap TS-253D vs 4 bay, worth the PCIe 4x4 future upgrade with 2 bay?
Posted by: ashkasto - 12-12-2021, 04:13 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking at the Qnap TS-253D model, My understanding is the 2-bay offers a PCIe which is 4x4 speed for future upgrade verses the 4-bay or 6 bay offers a 2x4 speed PCIe speed. How much of a difference in performance would that be for adding NVMe drives for cache or 10GBe? Am I better off getting 2bay and getting expansion bays to make use of the 4x4 speed?

Thanks

Connect Qnap TS-453D to PC with USB 3.1?
Posted by: ashkasto - 12-12-2021, 04:13 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Can i use the USB 3.1 as a way to transfer data from my PC to NAS through the USB 3.1? It should be faster than my computers 1G ethernet correct? Thanks

Question/opinion on a 2nd NAS, to be used for surveillance..?
Posted by: SandmanXX - 12-05-2021, 01:29 AM - Forum: Surveillance - Replies (2)

I currently use a 1019+, for plex movie and a large music library, and recording 2 interior cameras 24/7.. I'm a little concerned about the wear and tear on the 1019+ and the drives. Would it be highly advisable to get maybe a 220+ to handle just the recording? A Synology NVR is probably out of the question. Any opinions, or other recommendations on what to use for the recording? I have 2 spare 4tb drives I can use if I get another NAS.
Thanks!

  QNAP TS-1635AX Memory Upgrade?
Posted by: epmcmannis - 11-29-2021, 01:53 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (1)

What is the largest memory module the QNAP TS-1635AX will handle and can you recommend a brand/model that works? I tried a crucial one and it would not boot.

  I think I need an 8 - 12 bay NAS (Asustore v. Synology?)?
Posted by: j - 11-28-2021, 04:38 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm pretty sure I don't want to deal with the following:

Qnap,

15+ External HDDs,

Someone else's mail server.

I'm unable to find current info on Asustor Lockerstor 10 but am VERY interested in this from a features view perspective. I have had no luck with dealing with Asus directly; their links to 'dealers' turns up 2 out 3 have no listing for the current version and the 3rd requires opening an account to get any info.

It would be useful see some sort of review on the current 10 bay model (AS7110T) including any 'where to buy'. At this point, I am looking at a history of dealing with only mother boards and routers over the last 30+ years. I real need some concrete specs and opinions on why I should get this over a DS1821+.
Their is also the question of the relative prices of Asustor Lockerstor 10 (AS7110T) vs. (AS6510T)

NAS or DAS for safe data archiving?
Posted by: liketrane - 11-26-2021, 10:39 PM - Forum: Video/Photo Editing - Replies (1)

I'm thinking of finally biting the bullet and upgrading my video storage solution (I'm currently just buying more and more USB drives and duplicating them for redundancy).

I use macs and thunderbolt / usb all the time.

I'm NOT an IT professional.

I thought that a NAS/ or DAS (RAID) would be a better option while my storage needs mount with more and more video content.

I'm going to access and add data for project work several times per year, but won't need to leverage it as an active work drive on a day to day basis. I plan just to transfer the data to a 'working drive' when I need to edit things and then just transfer it back when done. So SPEED isn't important.

That said, I want to make sure my STORAGE of the data is SAFE / backed up.

At first, I thought a synology NAS would be super user-friendly -

4 BAY NAS ($300-$400) (cheaper vs. more expensive)
4 10TB HD'S ($200+ EACH) (probably ironwolf vs. wd)
CONNECT VIA CAT5 THROUGH ROUTER / SWITCH

$1,100 - $1,200

But since there's no absolute backup (and that raid could still fail) I'd be stuck paying high monthly fees to backup 10TB+ over the coming decades.

So now I'm thinking I should get a DAS instead (since I could use the $7 / month personal backblaze with a DAS RAID) as a cheap backup along with the RAID redundancy.

Buuuuut.... Synology doesn't make a DAS (or I don't know of any way to clearly guarantee that I can use crashplan or backblaze with a mapped or NAS drive without jacking up the fees).

So I guess I could get a QNAP, but I'm concerned that I may not have the tech chops to set it up...

Does all that make sense?

Am I worrying about my lack of tech chops for the QNAP RAID?

Any other options I should be aware of?

Jeff

  Cloud backup for 10TB+ NAS?
Posted by: liketrane - 11-26-2021, 10:39 PM - Forum: NAS Security - Replies (1)

It seems that for anyone with a large amount of data on a NAS (let's say 10TB or more) that they are going to be stuck paying hundreds per year just to back it up in even the cheapest cloud backup solutions. What is the cheapest way to back up this amount of data to the cloud with occasional updates?

Should I just get a DAS to obtain the $7 / month personal backblaze with a DAS RAID) as a cheap backup?

NAS buying suggestion for research group?
Posted by: Jarmck - 11-21-2021, 06:43 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I am from a research group with about 12 people, looking for a NAS with about 250 TB space and potential scalability. We are looking at Synology RS4021xs+ (DSM) and TS-h2483XU-RP (QTS-hero). It seems both are good models with enough space. Synology is said to be more user-friendly, while QNAP has more powerful hardware and flexibility.

But we do not have much actual experience with NAS, so not sure which brand or system would be a good fit. Could anyone help us with some comments or suggestions in terms of long-term performance, reliability, or functionality?

Thank you so much.

How much hard drive space for Plex server.?
Posted by: N1ceDrgn - 11-06-2021, 05:46 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I watch the NAS Compares videos often and I enjoy the Plex server videos. I have wanted to build a Plex server but I've never found a good source or guide for how large to build my Plex server. I have a large digital video collection of DVD and Blu-ray that I want to import. A rough estimate is around 500+ disc's.
Approximately how much storage would be required for a Plex server to run well and store this collection?
