Hi all. I'm new here, so I'm sorry if I do or say anything silly!

I have a small home network with a Synology DS-213j serving home/office needs and Plex. It's very nearly full so I want a second NAS, to use solely for Plex. I will then use the 213j for home/office duties only, with the two current 2TB drives mirrored.

So what can people recommend please? I'm not wedded to Synology, and I find their interface a bit clunky/inflexible to be honest. However this could be different for a modern system.
I'd ideally like a 4-bay NAS, and would start with a single 8TB drive possibly. Reliability and quality for me are most important. I would expect no more than 3 Plex users at a time to be using the NAS, at anything between 720-4k, more or less always on a TV. My maximum budget would be £1000 all-in, though I'd hope to spend less if I can.

Considering acquiring a Synology 4 bay NAS with 16TB drives .... I would like to mirror bays 1 and 2 for ongoing backups of a few PCs and have bays 3 and 4 independent, stand-alone and accessible drives and would like to rotate off site bay 4 (can I replace bay 4 monthly as an independent stand-alone drive?)

Is that easily done? Which Synology 4 bay would you recommend?

I don't have an unlimited 3G/4G plan. Is there an option to automatically backup with Moments on Wifi only?

Wanted to ask for some advice with a QNAP NAS. I have the TS219P II. I really want to be able to share some of my personal videos with friends and family. I puts some videos on the NAS and created a share link. But when I view this link.. I can't get it to stream the video. It plays the clip.. but with audio only.. no video. Are there specific video types that I need to have my clips in so they can be streamed? These are small SD clips.. so nothing crazy. Is there a setting I'm missing that will allow the NAS to stream the clips..and transcode if needed? Thanks much! -Peter

I currently own a QNAP TS-453Mini 8GB (original version) w/ 4x 4TB WD Red Pro (64MB cache) HDD's (all bought in 2016)
1 of HDD's failed this week and I'm looking to replace it ASAP.
I was looking at the 4TB WD Red Pro vs the 4TB WD Gold vs the 4TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro HDD's.
I'd need some advice on the following:
- Can I mix HDD brands (i.e. 2x Seagate + 2x WD Red Pros)
- Can I mix HDD's with different cache sizes? (Red Pro 64MB vs Gold 256 MB, or even Ironwolf Pro 128MB vs Red Pro 64MB, and so on)
- Considering the recent SRM issues, are the WD Gold and Ironwolf models bound to be affected?
- Is the WD Gold worth it for a 4bay NAS?
All three drives are nearly at the same price right now, so that's not an issue. It's more on reliability.
I replaced one of my drives 1.5 yrs ago already and now a 2nd one failed this week. That's 2 of the original WD Red Pro's in less than 4 years. Add the emerging SRM issues affecting WD 2TB-6TB HDD's...

All of the Media coverage is regarding the WD Red HDD's and the shingling used in these drives to increase storage capacity. Does any of this controversy extend to the WD Red Pro drives as well?

Can these NICs be configured to work with each other. They seem to have dissimilar MTUs?

with Hardware RAID USB 3.0 Type-C RAID 0
(2) WD Red Pro 4TB NAS Internal Hard Drive
- 7200 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s,
- 256 MB Cache, 3.5"

I currently keep all my Media on TR-002 and Run Multimedia from Host. I want to Restore Everything - Backup and Media to Host then use TR-002 to backup changes to host.

Before I reconfigure the Host - Is this logical? Is there a better way?

Upgrading from a DS213se, 2 x 4 TB, 1.6 TB movies and 250 GB photos. Backingup to USB attached 4TB HDD. Based at home. Want to upgrade for improved speed and capcity to use as Time Machine backup destionation for 2 macOS laptops and a MacMini. Will also host files for two users, about 50 GB each. old DS214se will become backup to new NAS. Will plan on max synology RAM to protect warranty and new NAS drives. I expect that the process for migrating data to a 2 drive unit is different from a 4 drive unit. Need guidance on that process after purchase decision is made. Could do DS218+ with 2 x 8 TB drives or DS418+ with 4 x 4TB drives. Suggestions and comments? Am I missing an important issue obvious to a more expereinced user?
