I'm wrestling with the decision: Synology DS 920+, 1522+, or 922+. Presuming the 922+ would have 10G transfer rate.

In reading your reviews and noting the Surveillance cameras opportunity in this system, I am curious as to how high the resolution of the cameras could be if the 920+ is chosen?

I am trying to find 12 MP security cameras at manageable prices, and so, would like to know if such cameras (high data rates) are manageable in the 920+ context.

As of today I have been requested to find a video doorbell that can be recorded as well. In reading through the offerings I am not sure if any of even the wired models have remote storage as an option? If you know of any please advise.

Does the surveillance camera capability of the 920+ make my American Dynamics Intellex Ultra video recorders obsolete?

I have a negative association w.r.t. the Celeron processor, and this more than other issues make me think I should wait for a 922+. Is this a valid concern?

I have just ruined a number of drives both with, and without, data on them by plugging them into an ostensibly new/refurbished SSK docking station - If that data point has value to you...

I'm hoping the 920+ will be able to revive the new WD 16TB Gold drives(2), which were new and unblemished before the docking station? Is this likely?

In essence I am upgrading to an NAS because of my experience with the docking station. (That and the fact that I have so many smaller external mount drives that I can no longer keep track of them.)

I need to act soon, so any guidance you can offer is most appreciated.

My technical understanding of the devices mentioned above is limited to approximately the information contained above.

Thank you.

  Failed Audiotrack
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-13-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Dear Ed,

I'd love to stream media straight from my NAS, but I have encountered a problem... some media files can't play back because there is a problem with the audio track, others play back fine...

I think this is a problem with the NAS software as it probably won't support the audio file, do you have any idea how I could fix this issue?

"Failed to play the video because the file format of the currently selected audio track is not supported." or as you can read here https://community.synology.com/enu/forum/1/post/115214

Kind regards!

  Choosing appropriate NAS system
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-13-2022, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I am looking to purchase a NAS system, mainly to centralise data storage and accessibility.
Requirements:
1. There are about 6 different departments that would need individual space on it
2. Secure Access to data & transfer & sharing both in the building and remotely by each individual team
3. Video storage following live stream plus video editing of church services. I will not be streaming videos from the NAS
4. Also will be storing pics and audio of events other than these large files, there will be simple day to day files
5. I will need redundancy
6. Never used a NAS before, however I am quite techy. Therefore I will need an interface/software that can easily guide me through at anytime in most eventualities during set up and maintenance

Thank you very much for your help and keep up the good works of educating us out here.

vs
QNAP or other alternatives. What to buy?

What NAS should I get with 4+ slots if I am a photographer on a budget? What is the best bang for the buck? And what is the difference between 1G, 2.5G, and 10G connections?

My Internet speed is less than 1G right now.

  Synology 920+ for Photo Editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-13-2022, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hi, started watching your YT channel and appreciate all the info and help you're giving.

I have some basic questions. I purchased the 920+ just today for $450. My QNAP TS-451 bought in 2016 crashed and burned a few months ago and have been using regular ext HD ever since so I'm relieved the 920+ was on sale today as I was trying to hold out for the 1522+ or the potential 922+.

Although I've had the QNAP from years ago, my knowledge with networking and security is still very basic. One day I woke up to see my QNAP was inaccessible (beyond the typical dynamic IP address change). I suspect it was hacked and was encrypted. The QNAP became unrecognizable and inaccessible and I couldn't pull any data off the QNAP anymore. I had an old backup but the whole situation was still painful.

My questions are:
- I'm currently using a 2018 iMac 27" that has a 0.5TB SSD. I take photos and edit with Lightroom. I first copy the photos onto my iMac's HD, do the edits, then offload to an external HD over USB 3.0. I previously hooked up my QNAP to the router and access it as a file server wirelessly to my computer. For the Synology, I bought some WD 8TB 7200 RPM Red Plus HD's. If I connect my iMac to my router, and in turn, the router to the 920+, will editing photos from the Synology in Lightroom be comparable to editing the photos directly on my SSD? Would that be the best way to connect my iMac to the Synology while still allowing other computers to connect to it wirelessly?
- What are some security steps to take at the very minimum to secure my new 920+ so what happened with my TS-451 doesn't happen again?
- In terms of privacy, are storing personal info like family photos better than keeping it on Google Photos/Amazon/Apple iCloud? I trust Apple's privacy policy more than I do Google/Amazon. I use iCloud for my phone pictures, and my archiving is done on the offline ext HD described above. But I'm considering my. photos onto the NAS and backing up my phone photos there too. But I wonder if Synology can be trusted not to send customer info (names of files, even facial recognition algorithms), metadata including GPS coordinates, or even copies of the photos back to the company. What are your thoughts on this?

Thank you for your help!

  Replacing DS1511+
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-13-2022, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Been holding out updating my SYNOLOGY 1511+ for some time. Love the unit, but seems like I should update. Prime Day 920+ pricing is hard to pass up. Seems like a logical stepping stone till we see where SYNOLOGY goes with GPU support. Looking at QNAP TVS-872 and h1288/h1688 per your articles/videos. The price point of the 920+ seems hard to pass up.

I'm expecting the performance of 920+ will be night and day to my 10 year old NAS.

Thanks for the assist.

  Buying (Synology?) NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-13-2022, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hello to both of you.

Good morning, afternoon, or evening whichever suits the best for the time you read this message!

I've been watching your channel "NASCompares" for quite some time now, which led me here today. You guys are awesome! I've learned a lot... a lot lot lot from your uploads!

In short: I would like to install a NAS for my parents for safety measures. I have watched a tone of your vids about different NASes. memory upgrades, ssds. and routers and against all the information I could get from you unfortunately I am still stuck.

I need your expertise. opinion!

Recently I have upgraded my parent's 2, old PCs and since both of them are in their 70's I thought so perhaps some automated backup system would be nice as well to make sure they won't lose any of their precious photos. or documents. etc.

Thanks to you guys! Now I have some idea about NASes as a whole. but just cannot get around those tiny little details.

Their two PCs:
PC 1 has roughly 3,4 Tb storage capacity (Windows PC)
PC 2 has around 4 TB storage capacity (Windows PC)
Both systems are around 20-25% full

and just to make it a bit safer I would like to make an off-site backup of their data as well on a separate NAS at my place and vice versa.

My laptop (MacBook) has only 1 TB capacity. On the other hand, I have roughly 5 TB of data on external storage devices that should also need to be backed up.

At this point, I was thinking about Synology Hyper backup. that could solve this issue.

If It could back up their phones as well with as little daily tinkering from their side as possible (as they either cannot or simply will not do it anyway) that would be awesome!!!

My first question would concern the ideal NAS for the task and the number and capacity of drives for the NAS(es) that should serve two to three separate PCs? What would you suggest?

I thought that e.g. a DS920+, filled with 6 TB drives. would be nice, on both sites but perhaps it is a bit overkill.

I went with the 6 TB drives in mind as I would like to hyper back up around 2-4 Tb of their data on my side and roughly 3-5 TB of my data on their side.
Or is it too much for hyper backup??

The main job would be to back up the data (photos. official documents, some movies) from the PCs to the NAS and create off-site backups as well on both my parents and my side. From time to time take snapshots of the PCs onto external storage devices if possible, but no VMs or Plex.
Is 4 GB of memory sufficient for this kind of task or 8 GB would be better?

Another question is whether or not should I upgrade their router as well?
I have a few years old Archer C7 - AC1750 that should be OK, however, their main router came from the internet provider company and I'm not sure if there are any ethernet ports left available to connect the NAS to. Any suggestion on this topic perhaps?

Would SSD caching on both NASes make any observable difference in performance? In case it would what amount of SSD caching do you suggest? 2Tb on both devices?

I have calculated with roughly 1500 Euro/NAS (including the drives and SSDs if needed) but I'm not sure whether or not is it sufficient? too much? too little?

I'm sorry if asked too many questions! I have calculated it over and over in my head but since I lack the expertise I am stuck at this point.

Could you give me some advice?

Thank you for every piece of advice you can share!

Looking forward to your answer!

Bence
