Some ideas for videos (probably TL;DR!)
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-31-2022, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I really enjoy your videos and find your explanations very helpful. I wanted to suggest some video topics that I would really benefit from, and maybe other would watch as well. I think these could all be rather detailed videos that are not specific to any NAS brand. Of course, short brand-specific follow up videos would be great as well!

Home network security, esp. router and WiFi settings for safe remote access to NAS. I know that storage is your thing, but accessing storage safely and keeping bad guys out is so important! And not all the key settings are on the NAS itself. Of course, you couldn’t possibly give specifics for every router on earth, but you could probably provide generic advice and send us to Google how to do it on our own routers!

Best practices for NAS security, esp. settings for your NAS to protect from attackers (esp., ransomware). You have done some of this, but there are so many topics!

Encryption principals for storage (e.g., should I encrypt stuff on my network?, should I encrypt my NAS?, what to think about when data is in motion?). I am not really clear on how to think about what I am actually protecting against, much less how to do it.

Getting the most out of my NAS – What’s it good for besides storage?

Where does NAS fit in my backup plan? (Should I edit/use files from PC drives and backup those files to my NAS? Or should I use NAS-stored files directly and backup the NAS elsewhere? Or something else?)

Backup up strategy for the home user (Periodic, full, unencrypted backups are easiest to understand and restore for the backup newbie, but there are so many other options such as incremental and snapshots. How fancy should a non-techie get?)

We are two churches that meet in the same building, and we want to share the same NAS. We've decided that starting out, each church won't need more than 2 TB, but it could be good to start out with 4 TB/church or more.

It will be used to share files amongst people on staff not in the office. We don't have regular office hours, and most of us do work for the church outside of the church.

We will share video and large audio files.

Because of sharing between two different organizations, it seems like one requirement would be ease of access and setup. Ease of use of software plays into that as well.

I haven't set up a NAS before, and have beginner knowledge of networking.

wisdom on replacing and moving data
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-30-2022, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good morning,

Thank you for your videos they have been a great help over the years. A few years ago i purchased the DS718plus two bay which as been awesome however over the years yes i have completely filled the storage which is currently two 8tb drives with no mirroring i think its called. I now want to upgrade and watching your video on the best plex nas in 2022 i want to get the The QNAP TVS-h1288X NAS however with everything at the moment its a bit prices so my short term plan due to cost is to get to 16tb iron wolf nas to replace the current drives. so that when i do eventually buy the QNAP to last a hell of a long time hopefully i can then add all the drives together and give me one hell of a plex experience as i do love my collection and how i keep growing it so its bigger and better.

The question is how is the best way to move the data from my current two 8tb drives on to the new two 16tb drives? i have seen these docking stations but was not sure if they would word or there is a another way to do the data transfer?

This was the device i saw on amazon :FIDECO Docking Station, USB 3.0 Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5 and 3.5 inch SATA HDD or SSD, Support Offline Clone, TF & SD Card Reader, and 2x 18TB Hard Drives

Any help on this would be greatly apricated and thank you again for your videos even though my bank balance does not like them haha

Do I stay with DROBO or move on?
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-30-2022, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thanks for your advice and help.

I am a professional photographer working from home and reasonably competent with IT without being IT trained

I have used DROBO for several years and my D5 and D5T have never let me down. Sure disks needed to be replaced but nothing worrying!

What does worry me is whether I should a) stay with Drobo or b) move to a new platform? I use my RAID system to house my photographs (some 20TB worth) on WD disks of capacity between 10 and 20TB and overseen by Adode Lightroom Classic

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I an apartment building with 5 units, and a next door building with 2 units. I have tried providing my tenant with a MESH system with Google FI but the internet connection isn't the best because of the walls and how old the building is. I am thinking about doing a wired CAT 5/6 to each apartment and doing a WAP in each apartment.

I have a Neatgear CM1000 cable modem. What switch, WAPs do you recommend? Should I use POE devices?

I also have other building with 4 apartments that is a few hundred feet away and I really do not want to pay for another internet connection if I do not have to. How do you suggest I do so considering the distance the outdoors....

Again thanks!

  Nas to Nas Security Advantage
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-30-2022, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

First, thanks for your webinar on Nas security.

I currently have the Synology DS418 with 4 4TB drives. Since I have shares to my office windows computers, I understand that my entire storage is vunderable to ransomware attack.

My question is, if I setup a 2nd NAS in the same network or at a another location and setup Hyper Backup to backup to the remote Nas, will this isolate that permanent connection from a randomware encryption infecting the remote nas?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

  First NAS Advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-29-2022, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I'm looking to buy my first NAS and I would love to get some advice. I want to create my own cloud where I will be storing my files, NAS will probably have to support DDNS because my ip is dynamic. Is it also possible to divide hard drive in a way that part of it can be accessed only in local network e.g part of the files would be documents that I would like to keep on local network drive and edit it from my pc/mac or use some sort of synchronization.

I was considering QNAP TS-233, but I read they are a bit harder to configure and had some security issues. I also considered Synology DS220J, but it have very low amount of RAM

Hello,

i am a FPV Pilot based on Cinematography (i only record on gopros)
so its about 5gb for 5 min.

I wanted to build a nas just for easy Plex acces to my MKV library

but i also started a small business and i have a really messy system with editing and saving my footage....
i edit acutally on my ssds, when i am done i move every file to a hard drive.

now i my main plan was to buy a
"Synology DS920+" and Start with Raid 1 (2x14TB) and add more drives later) to Raid 5....

i know you write i should best get a nas with 10gb port or thunderbolt,
and best with 6-8 drives because of speed....

(my nas is in my office room so it should be as quiet es possible ( i think WD Red plus should be quieter and same speed as Seageate Pro right?

if you could tell me what NAS itself would be good? i would also upgrade drives later on or maybe directly if needed but its so much money for "just" storage so i am a bit unsure...

i dont want to buy a second nas in 1 or 2 years better now a good soultion....

Thank you!
