  ts-453e or ts-464-4g ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-04-2022, 05:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I want to buy a new NAS. I'm hesitating between 2 models. The new TS-453E or TS-464-4G. Which is the better of the two models or which should you prefer? Thanks very much!

  What NAS to buy
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-04-2022, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have learned so much from your articles and YouTube videos. I currently have. Drobo 5D3 (directly connected to Mac with TBolt) I am worried that Drobo is in bankruptcy and I recently got an email form the company stating support for the next version of IOS is not compatible with Drobo. So time to move systems. Long time ago I had a SYNOLOGY unit but the issue was speed. I went to the DROBO as I could connect directly to the unit but lost network access (not the big a deal as my computer was usually on for PLEX).

I use the Drobo in the following ways:

- time machine back up
- backup of critical files
- store music collection
- store photos not actively being edited
- movies for Plex

I am leaning to QNAP as based upon your videos I can directly connect the unit to my Mac. At the same time can I also connect to the network? I need to connect using TBolt as my Mac only has 1 GB port. I thinking about the TVS-472/672XT with an i3. Also the TS-h973AX looks good and would cost a little less. Please let me know what your thoughts are. Thank you.

I want to build a NAS primarily for video and audio media for my home. I use a Hisense TV running Android with an attached sound bar as my primary playback device.

  Synology and Toshiba MG 18tb
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-03-2022, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello

I am interested in procuring a Synology NAS for my home business use, primarily for backup and media server, it would most likely be serving 6 to 10 users and need to run a few VM.

Given the HDD support controversy I am a bit concern with which model of Synology I should go for in order to max storage without resorting to their own brand of HDD.

Specifically I am looking at a DS1821+, seeking to max its storage capacity but is unsure of the following:
1) Are Toshiba MG series supported and usable with this model?
2) I read that the max supported storage size is 108 TB, would this meant that getting 18tb would be overkill instead of 14 tb?

I have been following your YouTube channel and it has been highly informative. Would greatly appreciate if you can point me to a recommended pathway for my needs.

Thanks!

NAS as web server and apps variety
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi mate! I’m a developer and security consultant. I’ve been using an Airport Time Capsule 5th gen to store mostly movies and series and I use Infuse on Apple TV 4K to watch them, it’s worth to mention that 90% of that media is 4K HDR and it streams without lagging; I also use it to store software, transfer speed is slow (25MB/s average) but for the things I’m using it for it's enough.

A few days ago I started to look for NAS devices on Amazon, exclusively thinking about storing media and software and came upon Sinology and QNAP devices; I’ve never payed special attention to NAS devices, I knew that some had a sort of App Store but I’ve never checked to which extent that went; then I found out about both Sinology and QNAP devices being able to host websites and that’s when it really picked my interest because I’ve developed some php sites (MYSQL Databases) to a few clients that manufacture shoes.

Since those websites are really basic and lightweight I’m installing them in each client’s computer and they simply use any browser to access their localhost; so I’m seeing the opportunity to host all my clients sites on these NAS devices, installing Apache, PHP, MYSQL database and PhpMyAdmin. The sites are really light and although I would serve to ~20 clients, not everyone will be logged in at the same time; maybe 5 or max 10 clients will be logged in and connected to the MYSQL database at any given time, and even so they wouldn’t be hitting the DB at a high rate or doing heavy data management.

In particular, the two options that are within my budget are Sinology DS118 (179.99 USD) and QNAP TS-133 (139.00 USD). I’m more inclined for QNAP because it has 2GB RAM and its processor it’s slightly faster, and it’s 40USD cheaper; but I’m not sure if QNAP’s App ecosystem is better than Sinology’s, I mean, the 2GB RAM trumps the 1GB RAM of my Sinology option but I keep thinking about how rich and flexible is QNAP’s app ecosystem vs Sinology’s.

I would be very thankful if you can shed a light on my conundrum.

  expansion or second NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I currently have a DS918+ that is almost full, though I got it only three years ago. I originally put in four 12TB helium drives using Synology's RAID. I just bought four brand new helium drives that are 18TB each. Now I am faced with a dilemma. Do I buy a DS920+ so to have two NAS (one for backup)? Or do I get a fifth drive plus the expansion unit to expand the existing RAID? Or do I swap out the 12TB disks one by one and replace them with the 18TB drives? And how long would that take to rebuild each drive, and is it safe? There are many related questions here, for example - maybe it's better to copy all my files to a new NAS in RAID 0 (faster and more storage) and use the old NAS as a backup, also in RAID 0. I am aware that the life of a hard drive is on average six years, so the old NAS should be OK for a few years more. What would you do? THANK YOU!

Should I get a NAS or not?
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2022, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I currently store all my photos and videos on my main windows machine on a raid 1 array using Intel RST, I'm scared that I am going to get os corruption or malware/ransomware or something like that and thought of a NAS, what should I do.

I mostly have pictures, 4K 60FPS HEVC videos (Windows does support my HEVC videos) and generic windows executables. It's mainly only me who is going to have access to it and only want it online when needed and safe.

I just want to turn it on open my laptop/computer navigate to the network drive, open my videos and photos and files on demand

Thanks

I need to know what the perfomance will be on read and write ?(on mbs)I was thinking for raid 5? will be enough to work directly on it? I have ironwolf seagate hdd disks?

What else should i include to have all the neccesary perfomance tools? nvm? 10gbe card?

Best for cameras, iCloud backup, and Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2022, 04:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I’ve been watching your videos for about a year now. I have always wanted a NAS for Plex and for iCloud backup for my family and my phones. Tired of paying $10 a month to apple.

I also have small business that I want to get security cameras for. I have the “box store” DVRs currently. It’s a small supermarket for there would be about 20 cameras or so. Is that going to be too many?

Lastly I have a large movie library. I wanted to use Plex so my family and I could enjoy it.

I have had my eye on the DS1520+ and have looked a little at the DS1522. I think the 1520 is better for Plex correct?

My question is what would you recommend I get? I am not against getting separate ones for home and each of my businesses. I want to make sure to get the best for what I need and thought who best to ask than the guy I watch and learned everything I know about them from.

Love the videos!! Thank you so much

I've just seen one of your videos for a product I was thinking of purchasing (QNAP TS-453D-4G 4 Bay Desktop NAS Enclosure - Network Storage with 2.5GbE Connectivity, 4GB RAM, Intel Celeron Quad-Core, 2.0GHz Processor at GBP 337.45.

I would like some advice on what you think the best solution is to my problem. I have multiple 5TB and 6TB external hard drives that currently store all of my data. I would like a more robust backup for family photos and videos totalling around 6TB at the moment. I would also like to be able to connect all the mobile devices to the new storage solution in order to use it as an alternative for Google Photos / Amazon Photos.

Total number of users = approx 8. Total number of simultaneous users = approx 3.

If you need any more information, please let me know.
