Lots of storage and some power as well
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-27-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
I need a second NAS for my business which I run from home. I need to be able to store photos, videos and I need to work off the NAS directly = 10Gbps. I also would like to run a few VM’s.
I own a DS918+ w/DX517 with 4x WD Red Pro & 5x Seagate Ironwolf (non-pro) 8TB drives (SHR) already, and I like the Synology eco-system, but I'm open to moving platform, if it can communicate/sync with my DS918.
I like the idea of an 8-bay NAS, as it allows for plenty of drives and expansion if needed. Noise may be an issue though.
I want to use 3x EXOS X20 20TB drives to begin with as they are cheap, but not being supported by Syno scares me. Should it?
I've looked at the 1823xs+, as it supports storage on M.2 slots, but no SHR and lacking drive compatibility also scares me.
And is the 1821+ a bad buy (considering age), and is there a new version coming out (eg. 1823+, non-xs) soon?
Help!
Kind regards
Thomas

  DS423 still coming?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-27-2023, 02:14 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there,

do you thing there still will be a 4-bay value series a.k.a. a DS423?

I‘m looking forward to swap my DS2419+ with an ARM 4-bay system, equipped with 3 SSDs.
Weird downgrade, I know. But I only need a place to store data and energy efficiency is a priority these days.

Kind Regards,
Georg

  NAS for schools
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-27-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm wondering if this is the right nas solution for a school. Including requirements such as streaming, backup of all teaching data as well as ipad and notebook backups, virtualization and provision of network services. In addition, the fulfillment of requirements that may only arise in the future, because no one knows in which direction the teaching will develop.
Many thanks in advance for any helpful hint!
Kind regards,
Stefan

  alternative to Synology Photos?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-27-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

is there any alternative to Synology Photos? My primary use case for Synology is backup, not multimedia like plex. For Backup it includes photos on phone. I heard Synology photos works like Google Photos a lot just for NAS, and thats exactly what i need.

Does any other brand do it? or maybe a one time payment 3rd party backup solution?

Because if any other brand like Qnap or Asustor does it, i may not be bound to Synology and choose other options since i dont need Plex/Jellyfin.

NAS/DAS for 4k video and Photo editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-27-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi and thank you so much for doing this!

I'm sure you've had this question a lot but I'm also sure those people asking had the same findings I have. I am a photographer/videographer and need a large/fast local storage solution for 4K and some 8K editing along with photos (less taxing). I do not need multiple users, just myself but I want fast storage that is reliable for video editing/exports. I can't seem to find a perfect solution with TB3, 6 bays, and SSD caching. I do also love the option of the one touch copy, but that's a luxury item.

I was almost settled on the QNAP TS 664 until I saw that the PCIe slot couldn't take their TB3 adapter. Is there a unit out there for me? or will I need to make some concession?

Thanks so much for your help!

Alex

Have a synology ds220+ , hdhomerun on network, plex media server installed. Can successfully watch live programs, but get an error when I try to record a program. No write access to destination. Problem is it does not indicate what the path to destination is.

  DS723+ vs DS220+ vs DS223
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-26-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I currently own a DS213 and it's getting long in the tooth. I have been reading your articles and watching your videos to determine which drive is best suited for me. I want a fast drive, but I don't want to break the bank. The primary purpose of this drive is to back up my pictures and home videos from my PC (on the same local network as the NAS) and back up my pictures and videos from my cell phone. The concern I have is accessing the files remotely (especially the videos) and having the system lag or slow down (1080p and 4K). I've read the lack of an iGPU of the new Ryzen R1600 can make some hesitant about getting it (more so for Plex). I can't find any real-world benchmarks to assist me in determining what drive I should get, but I am leaning towards the more expensive 723+.

Additionally, I want to pair it with the WD Red Pro 4TB drives that are not (technically) supported.

Your thoughts are appreciated! Thank you.

  DS723+ vs. DS923+
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-26-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear NAS Compares,

I'm unsure if I should by the DS723+ or the DS923+. My most important use cases:
- I sync my files via GoodSync from 3 devices via the NAS
- I have Docker with 6+ container running, most consuming are ioBroker and JellyFin (for private picture and videos, no streaming)

I try to get the best performance, but for the start 2 SSD/HDD drives would be sufficient. I would for sure increase the RAM, both can deal 32GB so this would makes no difference I assume.

When I check the Synology page the tell the max. speed would be for the DS723+ 471/225 MB/s and for the DS923+ 592/562 MB/s. But for me the setup look nearly equal so I do not know if the difference in speed comes only when having 4 SSD/HDD drives in place. But when having 2 there is no speed difference?

My questions:
- Which one would you suggest?
- Is there (in case of 2 SSD/HDD drives and equal RAM) a difference in speed?

Many many thanks in advance!
Markus
