  Synology DS120j Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-29-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a friend that has a DS120j, and while it supports Plex, it's a pretty slow to respond device. Is there a model you can suggest that supports upgrading to with a disk swap method? If not, can you suggest a base two drive model that is powerful enough to run Plex and transcode if necessary?

Of course, my friend would prefer the first method to save on money, but are open to suggestions for a budget friendly, Plex capable, device with a good five year (if possible) future proofing Smile

This is an amazing offer!

I'm technically savvy, so I'm fine with the CLI or tinkering.

Use case:
+ Photo / Video storage (no fancy AI, no sharing, no editing, no remote access)
+ Normal document storage, occasional editing in-place

Requirements:
+ Easy to set up
+ Low maintenance
+ Easy to swap out drives if needed
+ iOS apps and preferably can use the Files app
+ Must be accessible and mount-able from Macs and Linux easily, preferably without any extra drivers

Nice to have in terms of priority:
+ De-duplication
+ Snapshot / file versioning
+ Support for 3rd party storage providers using an S3 API, rclone, or rsync
+ Encryption
+ Virtualization
+ Accessible to Plex-type players (does not need to host Plex app)

Storage:
+ 4TB but grows slowly. ~500GB/year.

The Nice to have section is really nice to have, it's perfectly fine if the available hardware don't support any of that.

  Synology drive function
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-29-2023, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

We have a synology 215j, considering upgrade to 423+ or similar Qnap. Key purpose is to replace my use of Dropbox which I use to host my work. I work between 2 computers PC, iPhone and iPad. My broadband is 500m up/down on a gigabit Lan network
I like the Synology drive and I did a test on it with introducing a single project on my PC that is synchronised with Synology drive which seemed fine at first. Later I dragged a bunch of folders (a lot), and it seems that Synology drive consistently do not sync the contents 3 levels in.
The question is if this is because I am using a 215j and upgrading to 423+ would solve the problem? Or would the Qnap equivalent work better for my needs?
I would like to have the client software that enables synchronisation, keep all of the files on the NAS, and then the ability to keep some of it offline on the client machine when desired (laptop, PC, iPhone iPad), similar to how it works on Dropbox.

Greeting,
I plan to buy TS-1263XU-4G (End Of Life) since I found it new with very low price (around 550USD) and I have some questions, is there any way to get video output since I want to try different OS in case the software support stopped.
there it seems some unused pin headers in the motherboard and not explain in the manual

Top near power connector and bottom left near the RAM slot

Posted by: Enquiries - 07-29-2023, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Mate,
I commented on I think your last stream on advice to this Smile

Mate Looking at streaming to 4 bedrooms and 2 Lounge rooms, most Likely they will not all be use at ounce, possibly up to 3 to 4 room at a time.

But what I would like to set up is PLEX as we use it now, running of my PC.

Also I would like to use the NAS as a Cloud service for the Family for backing up Mobile phones.

I have a little knowledge in IT but i would not say im Very Experienced but I do have a Large amount of time to Research and Learn new Programs and techniques Smile

I want to get this SETUP done asap so if you could recommend me the Best NAS setup for what I need that would be greatly appreciated.

I have watched so many of your YouTube videos and now my HEAD is SCRAMBLED haha on which way to go lol

Thank you

RAID 10 Synology WD RED 22TB Read Speeds
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-28-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I just built a nas with synology 1823xs+ and 4x WD RED Pro 22tb. Each has a throughput of around 265MB/s. When configured in raid 0,5 and 6 throughput is expected. In RAID 10 throughput is ~ 500MB/s (not good) Read, 530MB/s Write (g00d). Raid 10 should give 4x read , 2x write performance, but the write is barely hitting 2x. Any thoughts?

  ASUSTOR AS6702T 2nd Gen
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-28-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am considering the ASUSTOR AS6702T 2nd Gen NAS. I want to use it for a PLex Server at home with little if any streaming outside my network.
I have questions.
1. Will the 6702 work with just 4 M.2 drives installed, no SATA drives.
2. SATA III drives are supported but I was wondering if legacy older drives are backward comparable?
3. Can you use SSD drives instead of spinning drives, so I can make the unit quiet?

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks for the help and a donation is coming.

QNAP Failed Backplane, Moving data to new NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-28-2023, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a QNAP TS-251 with two WD Red 4TB drives, which recently experienced a failed backplane. I believe the drives are both good, but the RAID is degraded as a result of the backplane. I purchased a new QNAP TS-464 and 2 new 8TB Seagate Ironwolf drives. I'm wondering what would be the best approach to migrating my existing data.
I hope to continue to use all 4 drives, but won't installing the old drives in the new NAS require a reformatting in order to set up the new Storage Pool?

  RAM Advice DS720+
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-28-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I have been using my Synology NAS DS720+ without any issues for past 3 years with default 2GB RAM. Now I started to experiment with docker a bit and with couple of containers running I started to run out of memory. I have read all the articles regarding the RAM upgrade and compatible modules and I aware of the risk and benefits :-) But what is not clear to me:

1. If I buy a 16GB tested stick, should I replace the default one with that or not? Or can I leave the 2GB there and add 16GB to free slot to have 18GB in total?
2. In some of the articles you mentioned that you recommend to install two same sticks at once. Should I understand it as Synology NAS supports Dual-Channel? So it is better to install 2x8GB instead 1x16GB?

Many thanks in advance

Tomas

  Plex NAS with SSDs
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-28-2023, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I was interested in the Asustor Flashtor 6 FS6706T because of the SSD storage, price, and being quiet. However, it appears as not available on AMAZON and other providers. Perhaps it is no longer in production. Can you make a recommendation for an alternative model?
