Seeking to purchase my first NAS.
It will be used for:
Photos (100K uncompressed HUGE files), with AI object/face recognition;
Video (100s, mostly 1080); and
Audio (100K files: flac, wav and mp3) - remote access with 'Alexa' would be nice
My work includes photography, video and audio production; media storage. and remote access.
Desired specs:
Integrated Graphics
Ease of use
Fast connectivity
Future proof
I plan to migrate my (many) portable SSD drives onto the NAS you recommend.
Open to spending more now, (and do it right)

Hi NAS Compares,
Long-time lurker on the site here who is hoping to make a purchase soon and wanted to pop the question.
Looking around I have found that synology seems to be reasonably well received - although every single unit has pros and cons.
In a nutshell, what I need for my purposes ideally, is a device that will:
Be a two-bay NAS device
Host 2 x 10TB drives - the drives I keep seeing reviewed positively are WD Red devices but i am open to suggestion on this
Connect to a LAN and run on Windows 10 or 11 PCs
Run plex (well) over a LAN to an LG television
Run plex (well) over WiFi to two additional devices
Provide storage for digital documents
Not need a bespoke software solution just to copy files over the network to and from the PC - that is, the device/drive should show up in Windows Explorer and allow cut, copy and paste functionality
The very rough budget is around £750.
I'm certain that I may have missed points here, but many thanks in advance for any advice.

Good day,
I hope you can help me.
I am looking into setting up some services at home.
1. Data Backup and Sharing
- Mainly Media
- Phones and PCs
- Home and Away
2. Plex or JellyFin
- To be able to stream backup media on all devices
- I guess I can write a transcoder to make sure that there will be no transcode on demand.
3. Would like to use docker and spin up VM
- this could be setup on a mini PC I guess.
- learning
- Discord bots
- Home automation
I have been watching lots of your videos and reading your blogs and seem to come to these three NAS setups.
QNAP TS-464-8G
- Worried about security
Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS923+
- 1GBe will need a adapter for 2.5GBe
- No GPU for transcoding
ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 AS6704T
- Software
Apart from choosing the NAS itself trying to see what HDD/SSD/nvmes i need to buy and in what configuration confuses me.
Thanks for your time.
Kind Regards
Malcolm

Hello, I currently have a RS1221+ and was following your upgrade guide. I was wondering if you know what the max supported RAM speed and quantity is for that system?
I was looking into either 32GB or 64GB of this ram: https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct2k32g4sfd832a
Would prefer PC4-3200 RAM if possible.

adding laptop via wi-fi to nas |

I'm looking to buy the Synology DS224+. I will attach it (wired) to the back of my (wifi)router. I will add my desktop pc (Windows) via LAN. But can I also add the two laptops in the house to the NAS via wifi? The wifi will (ofcourse) be provided by the one and only router we have. The same one the NAS would be wired to.
Searching google has learned me nothing so far. Thanks in advance for your time and trouble.

Synology DS1522+ drive failures |

I've had a DS1522+ for a year, populated with 4x WD Red Plus 10TB HDDs. With no warning, the storage volume degraded and one of the Red Pluses disappeared in the storage list. I removed it, added it again and it re-appeared. I started a repair of the volume but the repair failed within an hour and the drive disappeared. I removed it and tried it in a PC - it didn't power up. WD took 8 weeks to replace it. The (recertified) replacement went into the NAS and the volume repair completed, it then successfully data scrubbed. An hour later the replacement drive died. Again, out and in - this time no reappearance. Into a PC - it didn't power up.
Do DS1522+s kill drives? Is the Red Plus really unreliable - even though they're listed on Synology's compatibility list?
The NAS is lightly used and the nice idea of using SHR2 doesn't seem at all robust with 2 out of 5 failures. I'm trying to determine whether it's NAS or drive. The failures had no prior warning.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, I'm looking for a nas for 80% personal use at home. Initially I would like to store administrative files (~100GB) and create a Jellyfin media server (or plex in the worst case) with around 1000/2000 films in 1080p and some in 4K (more recent films), as well as around a hundred series in 1080p mostly. I plan within 4 years to have a very efficient 4k HDR television. For the remaining 20%, it's anticipation for my job as a software developer, to store software projects and use a VM (maybe). We would have 2 to 3 users for the media server, not necessarily simultaneously, it depends on the day. The devices on which the media is played are an iphone, ipad, hisense vidaa smart tv and dell pc. A hardware or GPU transcoder would be a plus to avoid having to manage the transcoding myself. I have a preference for Synology and Qnap. I can start with two drives on 4 bays.
