Creating own NAS from scratch and feeling lost with all the options
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I wish to create my own NAS and Server to store Photos, Files and act as a Media server.

For photos, I am looking for an alternative to Google photos where meta data is kept and used (e.g. plex does not use meta data and it requires me to manually tag each photo and do this going forward).

For Files, I would like a central location where all my PCs or laptops can access the files. Preferably I will also be able to access the files from my phone though an app. If possible, I will also be able to access from my work PC where no software or app needs installed (if this is not possible this is not a problem). I would also like to store my gaming files/ saves (e.g. Steam) to the server so fast read/ write times would be preferred.

Media Server (and a way to stream these to phones, TVs, etc within home and out with)

For all of the above, I would like the ability to access the server/ NAS within the home when connected to the network and remotely, either on a PC or through my phone.

Hi

I would first like to thankyou both for the very informative videos you have created on youtube??
I have just purchased a new ds920+ with 32tb of WS Red+ and I was hoping for some advise as a first time user of a Nas, which raid option should I be using for lots of personal data, precious photos, loads of 4k and bluray movies and music. Thankyou in advance.

  NAS selection
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greetings,

So for a quick background, I want to create a home base NAS to store my files and as a backup for my devices similar to how google drive works. I am a MacOS user and have lots of music and video recordings that i would like to store and access wirelessly for personal use and at the same time (main use), have all the files accessible directly to my avr/tv for entertainment without using third party devices.

I have seen the QNAP TS251+ that has the hdmi out to be my best option but I'm worried about the software it has compared to a synology. I am a bit tech savvy but at the same time, I would rather have the simplicity of software and freedom to customize how my files are organized so is there a video of comparing how the software work for both the QNAP and synology? And just simply going through how they run on a normal basis?

Appreciate the help and More power to your videos!

Single drive upgrade in Qnap nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

Could you guys help me out? I have a Qnap TS-264 NAS with a single 8TB drive in it. Recently, I purchased a 12TB drive and would like to swap the two drives while keeping the 8TB drive as an offline backup. Currently, I have 5TB of data on my NAS, and I want to ensure that I don't lose any of my data during the swap. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds to buy a third drive to assist with the process.

Do you have any advice on how to do this? For example, is it possible to clone the drives in Windows 11?

Thanks for your help in advance.

I have four huh721212aln600's just lying around...
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-31-2023, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have 4 x 12Tb huh721212aln600 Ultrastars that I would like to leverage. They're a bit finicky when it comes to power delivery, optimized for enterprise drive shelves.

Any suggestions on a consumer end 4 bay NAS that would be compatible with them?

Something with a 4 core CPU, upgradeable to 10GB networking, 16Gb of memory and some modest NVMe caching?

Hi,

First time Synology owner, 223j and 2 x 8Tb seagate ironfolf pro drives.

I want to use it to:

1) Time Machine back up mine and my wife's MacBooks
2) Back up our iPhones or hold the backupfiles
3) Store all our photos there
4) What ever I may learn watching Your videos

I will be using it in RAID 1

What needs to be taken into account because I want to be able to save data while I'm out in the world?

Getting data from the drive is secondary while I am out and about...

Which of your videos should be mastered in my sleep?

Thank you for great videos, wonderful site and for the great work you guys are doing <3

Best Wishes,

Aki Mähönen

ps. how would I be able to donate to you guys? I'd just would love to help, a little, I am by no means rich, Sorry

Need help installing backblaze-personal-wine docker on my DS1821+
Posted by: Davel23 - 07-30-2023, 09:13 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (4)

I'm trying to set up the backblaze-personal-wine docker as outlined in the NAS Compares article on the subject.  (I tried to post the link here but I'm told I can't post URLs.)
I'm able to pull and start the container, but the Backblaze client doesn't seem to install.  Looking at the log there are several instances of "wine: /wine is not owned by you".  I assume this is preventing the container from creating needed folder structures but I am not super familiar with Docker and I don't know how to resolve this.  Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

Sad Help choosing my First NAS .
Posted by: denial - 07-30-2023, 08:11 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi ,

i love your videos and helped me so much but i need to ask about my first nas
because i am bit confused with a)model of nas for my needs and b)hdd's choice   Huh

Can you please help me decide?

First of all i dont have data that if lost i will be destroyed BUT i dont
want to lose my data if possible so i am looking for a reasonable option for at least 4 bay NAS
so i can have one disk for parity for redundancy and be a bit future proof.
And maybe then a cloud backup option of some sensitive data like documents or some
photos i dont want to lose.

My NAS is to have it mainly for

1)photos to back up from my pc's and mobile (iphone)
2)Documents from work on my laptop
3)Big storage for movies and series so I can play them from my laptop or my
home pc localy through NAS (no plex just use the nas as a hard drive to play movies/series) on a pc.
4)Full Backup of my 2 pc's and my laptop (right now i use acronis twice a month if i
dont forget it Sad ).

The amount of data I currently have is around 4.5 TB so i am thinking to start
with 2x 12TB WD Red Plus (lower noise from pro) since Gold are not supported officialy
from synology on 923+ or other models i checked.

Disks is another issue i would love to help me if possible since i trust WD  (WDDA is an issue but since i can
disable it its fine for me..) for years because I have disks 9 years old working fine and only once i lost a wd disk
years ago.
I was thinking for Gold but the compatibility issues with synology bothers me
since you get a Warning/Danger message all the time if disks are not supported am i right?

So if gold is not an option then red plus is the only way to go since pro is more noisy .
Sorry to say but i dont trust seagate and noisewise are more db's for my living room.

So any advice here would be helpful before i go out and buy disks!!!

So for the Nas unit i am considering Synology DS923+ even with an amd cpu, but 4gb of ram? seriously,
but since RAM KINGSTON KSM26SES8/8HD costs 29 euros will it be ok for the system or i will always have
a warning/danger message for the memory.

Other option is Synology DS1522+ since 8gb are ok and +1 bay for about 150euros
(the price i have for DS923+ from official reseller here is 708 euros for DS923+ and 858 euros for DS1522+)
is a better deal since RAM KINGSTON KSM26SES8/8HD costs here 29 euros for 923+?
Another issue was the nvme cache and not a pool option for 1522 , after i found your video about it
if i understand correctly if i dont use Synology nvme its only for cache even in DS923+ .
So since i never gonna buy Synology nvme with that price, cache is the way for both ds923 & ds1522+.

My question here is if i use Samsung or Intel or any other nvme vendor will my SYnology work ok or i will
always have a Question mark or Danger/Warning message for the nvme?

And finally the big question because the hardware on Synology is always outdated and no 2.5gbe is it a
good choise or i should go with something else ?
The only issue with Qnap is security since they have better hardware but go online is a risk.
And if i go for synology should i get DS923+ with kingston memory upgrade to 8gb for 29 euros or go for
DS1522+ already with 8gb and +1 bay for 130 euros more is it worth it?.
DIY and unraid was a solution but i dont want another pc working all the time since electricity bill is a big issue for me.

Thank you for any advice and sorry for all those questions but since i am buying first time and you
are the only one i found on youtube with so nice video's explaining almost everything you are the
only one that i will follow your advice .

Cheers!

  Synology NAS Ram Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-30-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a DS1618+ with DSM version 6.2.4-255556, currently running the 4GB it came with. I purchase Crucial 32GB Kit (CT2K16G48FD824A) and installed it. When i powered it on the power light flashed for approximately 3 -4 minutes maybe a bit longer, but the NAS never came online. so i shut it off and removed the 32GB kit, threw the 4GB stick back in and restarted. Within 2 minutes it was online. Did it not like the 32GB kit or did i just not wait long enough for the NAS to complete an internal test?

  nas purchase options ?

900 char max here, so 2 the pt.Send ur XMR/BTC addy. I will use ur Azon links. Looking at 220J/220+/420J.Currently tower server with LUKS on linux as raid 6 4+4+4+4TB. Need to replace or upgrade this. DSM7+ supports LUKS? or full vol encryption? Do i type the LUKS PWD on boot, or login to DS on boot and it uses a software key? can i use hardware (usb) LUKS key? {how to avoid the physical theft of whole unit & keep data integrity} The single 220J+USB3 > realtek 5G adapter can that be LAG for 5 usrs+media ctr at or do you recomm the 220+ with dual rj45 for this? Would love the 4 bay ( then 6+6+6+spare ) but that means all new setup of drives+device. Or would you recomm some other setup? Obviously the $$$ cheaper the better. I see you are using WD red HDD, thats good enough? (non-surveilance work, just files/media center). Also looked at SSD 4T+4T but the bottleneck is still the rj45. tnx
