I am looking into getting a NAS for the first time. I mainly want to use it for media streaming from backed up blurays and 4k blurays, and potentially music storage as well (mostly flac/high quality mp3).
The main questions I would have would be how much ram would be adequate, would nvme caching be a noticeable benefit, and is hardware transcoding necessary? For streaming media, it would mostly be to some 4k roku based tcl tvs (from around 2018) and some Xbox consoles (one x and series x). I have mostly been looking at synology for the ease of use with software, but am worried that the newer models do not have dedicated gpus for transcoding.

I want to buy my first NAS, and i'm interested in the Seagate Ironwolf 12TB HDD's
On Amazon i can find that harddrive with model number ST12000VNZ008
The compatibility list of both Terra Master and Synology talks about model number ST12000VN0008
Are these drives interchangeable or should i be wary?

Hi!
Found your channel and website and love it. Really precise information. I'm about to spend money on a NAS unit and was leaning toward the DS1522+ or the DS923+. The 1522 was more appealing looking at the price difference, but it's black friday and New Egg now have that deal on 923+ taking it down from 900CAD to 670CAD. Comparing to the 1522+ at 970CAD. That 300$ difference makes me wonder if I should go with it...it's 300$ I can invest straight on HD. And since we're I'm in Canada, I have to add bunch of tax to those amount. Should I still pay the extra to get the 1522+ or is the 923+ with this price point a great deal.
Thanks

I have a QNAP TVS-873e and bought
2 x 16GB RAM from Crucial DDR4-2400 SODIMM 1.2V CL17
The NAS starts up and works, but the NAS is very slow.
I saw your YouTube video on this but I still struggle to understand what I have done wrong.
And I asked QNAP support, and they just dragged along this ticket to internity. I started the request for help in Aug 2023, and now we are almost in Dec 2023.
All they have done so far is "wing it" and asked me to take away the new RAM modules, and just used the 2 x 4GB RAM that was included in the purchase.
The RAM I bought was as good as I understood from QNAPs recommendation of the right RAM (table), but Im scared that I have purchased the wrong RAM.
So what could I do?

| What's Best NAS for Me? |

Hi, I'm looking for advice on the best NAS for me. Please see the bullet points below for how I hope to use it:
-Store personal/family files, documents, music, etc.
-Store and share photos/videos (Like Google Photos)
-Heavy use of Plex in 4k - I'm considering buying a Plex Pass so I can watch Plex content on my devices in the future
Just hoping for something low maintenance and powerful enough for the next 5-10 years. I think I'd only need 2-bays, and I would buy 2 X 8-12 TB drives, storing everything on the 1st and just using the 2nd for backup (Redundancy).
After reading some of the articles on your site, I think the DS224+ or DS723+ will work best for me, but I also don't want to break the bank if I don't need the +series.
Any advice would be very appreciated, thanks!
Mike

I saw your video that the TS-464 is the all around best but I am looking for more storage so I am considering the TS-664 with WD 20 TB or 22 TB NAS Red Pro Drives set to RAID 1 (3x3). My question is would the 664 be a good option for Plex? If so how do you setup Plax and RAID options on the NAS?

I’ve just watched your video on the WD SN700 NVME. I have bought a Synology 923+ and have decided to buy 2 of these drives for caching.
Should I buy 2x 1TB or 2X2 TB?
I’ve been looking at heat sinks on Amazon and have seen an aluminium one 6mm high and one 3mm high. Which one would fit in the DS 923+.
I have ordered Kingston Premier ECC ram after your recommendation’s.
Kind regards.

I’ve just sent a message on NVME ssd for caching. I forgot to ask should caching be read only or read write. Is there any danger of looseing files with read write. I think SpaceRex mentioned something about a system could be corrupted to read only if using read write caching.
Kind regards

Hi, nice tutorial on proxmox install on asustor Nas. How did you get the drive to show up in proxmox and be available for zfs etc. As proxmox states it can't work with a hardware raid controller in place.

Hi there,
I have a Qnap TS-673A full with 8tb Ironwolf pros in raid5 and I've ran out of space.
I was going to buy a TL-D800c and start by populating it with 3 x Toshiba n300 16tb's in raid5 and add one drive at a time when I needed/could afford them until I filled it.
Ideally I'd like to populate my TS-673A with 16tb drives and have the 8tb ironwolfs in the TL-D800c. But don't have available storage to back it up before moving everything around.
Could I move my 6 x 8tb ironwolfs from my Nas and put them into the TL-D800c and the Nas still recognise them and their raid? As if so I could leave them there and populate the Nas with 16tbs. I know you could do this with two compatible Nas's, but cannot find any info on expansion units.
Many thanks
Yasha
