Exclamation Most new Raid systems don't provide bit rot protection?
Posted by: Ffej46521#$! - 08-08-2023, 10:33 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I just watched this video from level1tech about how most modern  raid systems don't properly correct bit rot or parity errors. This was shocking to me.  Seems like only ZFS provides the error checking and correction and all of these NAS systems are not protecting our data? Please provide your opinion on this problem stated in this clip. Perhaps a YouTube episode is in order?

  Home NAS replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-08-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I discovered your videos on Prime Day, covering the Prime Day deals. Really helpful, thanks Smile

I currently have a Synology DS216+II with a couple of WD 5TB drives, paired so I have 5TB of usable space, tolerant to a single drive failure.

The NAS is used for storage of photos and videos, video editing, and streaming music and movies using Logitech Media Server and Plex. Movies are mostly 1080p but would like to cope with 4k when I next upgrade the TV. I'm also interested in running iSpy or similar CCTV.

I'm looking to upgrade to something with plenty more space as I'm taking more video now. Probably looking for 48TB or more?

Tempted with going SSD, like the new FlashStor.

Upfront cost isn't too important as I'll be buying through a business, but keen to have low power consumption as that's on my home energy bill.

Would love to hear your suggestions Smile

Thanks

Rob

Upgrading RAM in Terramaster F4-423 (TrueNAS)
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-07-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I'm currently running Unraid in a NAS I built five years ago. It's a massive tower case, and these days uses too much power even when all drives are powered down.

I want to switch to a compact Terramaster F4-423 and run TrueNAS.

I want to upgrade the RAM to 32gb. Will this work in the F4-423, or can you recommend a better RAM?

Crucial RAM 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL22 (or 2933MHz or 2666MHz) Laptop Memory CT16G4SFRA32A

Thank you for your time.

Best 2-bay Synology for offsite backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-07-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a DS1520+ with a total of 10.5TB storage that I would like to backup to another Synology NAS offsite at my brothers (I'm assuming the proper app to use would be Hyper Backup).

I'm trying to decide if the DS223J would work or if I should get the DS223. I would do the initial backup at home then take it to my brothers.

Thanks for any help!

  NAS & Mac Mini

Just watched this video and had a question...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVWZHyjE284

Why not combine both a NAS and an old Mac Mini...

MAC as the server, and NAS as the file storage? doesnt this give best of both worlds? Assuming power consumption is not a concern?

Synology NAS for transcoding Plex, network connected only
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-07-2023, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Long time Plex and Synology user, looking to upgrade my DS216II+ to some better Synology hardware. I'm confused about best choice given that I use network connection only, no HDMI direct to TV, and watch on home network using an Android miBox.

Only have a single 720p plasma TV, although 4K possible when this one dies. Am I still better to go with a device like 920 due to its dedicated GPU, or is my use so low end that the newer 923 could still transcode internet downloaded files easily?

Want to use SHR/RAID and BTRFS with future expansion path, so 4 bay seems better chiice than 2, but budget may ultimately make thzt decision for me.

  Choosing NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I would need a little help here. I am buying my first NAS. The main purpose of it should be replacing Google Photos. I am planning of putting about 8TB of storage inside of it. But I cannot choose between QNAP TS-233 and Synology DS223j. On one hand the QNAP is more powerful, but I heard that Synology has better software. Anyway feature that I use very often in Google Photos is searching using AI. For example if I want to search photo of my car, so I just type "car" and it shows me pictures of my car. I wonder which of the phone apps (QuMagie or Synology Photos) is overall better and also wnich have the better AI recognition. Or should I just choose QNAP for the hardware? I will be very greatfull for any opinion.

  NVMe for DS1522+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

As per my previous request, I have purchased the Synology DS1522+. In order to maximise the performance of it, I would like to add 1 or 2 NVMe's. I have looked at the Crucial P5 Plus 1TB Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD. Is this suitable for the DS1522+ (with or without a heatsink?) as I can't see anything in the specs as to whether the 1522+ is Gen 3 or Gen 4 etc. Please help if possible. Many thanks. Keith. PS Although this is for cache, will the 1522+ be able to use the NVMe for storage? K.

  Hyperbackup DS1621+ -> DS415play DSM7.1 vs DSM7.2
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there! A quick query about possible problem if I upgrade my DS1621+ to DSM7.2. I use my old DS415play with Cyberbackup Vault to back up my main NAS. The old DS415play isn't currently compatible with DSM7.2 and may never be. I'm unsure whether the Backup Vault 3.02 on the DS415play will be compatible with the v4 that comes with DSM7.2 should I upgrade my DS1621+. The release notes for Cyberbackup Vault 3.02 doesn't fill me with confidence. Should I hold off upgrading DSM on my DS1621+ until I replace the old DS415play with something DSM7.2 compatible? Thanks!
