Hi. Value your YouTube videos. Want to have a NAS that I divide into two storage "areas." One for protecting important family docs, the second is the very important one: all family slides (~1,000 35mm or more), videos, scanned pictures, plus DVDs...the entire family's multi-media and history. Loss of this data is not an option. Want advanced features like facial recognition, advanced means for cataloging, then sharing with family via a vpn interface. Running a 1 Gbps rated network. Willing to pay now for ability to expand later (e.g., M.2 cache or drive. Unsure what HDD sizes. Thanks.

Hello
I have a QNAP TS-251D with a TR004 attached. Currently the NAS is not set up with RAID (yes I know...).
If I copied all of the data on the main unit to the DAS and then started again with setting up the TS-251D would I risk the data stored on the TR004?
Thanks

Hi,
Looking for some advice. I currently stream all of my media around my home from my cMP 5,1 where it is stored onto my screens, each of which has an AppleTV device. To be fair this would suffice for most things. However my family would also like to make use of my library, problem is they live at different addresses. The answer would seem to be using something like Jellyfin. I don't want to allow access to my MacPro however, so a server of some kind seems to be the answer. I would rather build than buy, so it's more fun. but the issue I have is the OS.
I'm only really familiar with MacOS, although I have tried Linux on an old MBP, however I am not too far into that.
What would your recommendations be regarding an OS that is both straight forward enough for an ageing beginner as well as inexpensive (Free!)? Can CasaOS run on a homebuilt server? Would it do what I need it to? Or would it be better to learn TruNas or maybe pay for UnRaid.
I'm not certain that the lack of RAID is an issue (althoughI believe that is on the way with CasaOS), as all of the media files will also be on the MacPro, but obviously it would be useful going forward.
Incidentally, have you reviewed at any point the InWin MS-04, as it seems to be a smart little 4bay with included PSU.
Hope this isn't too long and convoluted.
Thanks
Paul
PS I've also had issues connecting my new router....

Mixing Drive Brands in Synology NAS |

I would like to know if it's OK to mix drive brands (WD, Seagate, etc.) together in the same NAS. I'm matching the 7200rpm speeds of all the drives and the cache memory specs.
I really love your channel and it's my go-to for deep dives into the subject. Thanks for doing your videos!
Cheers, Craig O'Donnelly

NAS - media file optimization for DS1522+ |

28000 video files recorded off air, owned DVD digitization, and digital purchase. All video files are .mp4 files. NAS is DS1522+. I seek data on the optimum file structure as I can adjust my files using a conversion program. I do not need Ultra high resolution, just quality video recording with sync'd audio. Plex is my video usage program. Question: Again, what is the optimum file structure that will play on PLEX using a DS1522+ NAS.

New to NAS, currently use WD My cloud home that now no longer works with my router. Also loss of support is not good. Looking for first NAS to backup family's photos and videos. currently paying for multiple cloud services and want to stop. I already have a separate 4TB USB WD HDD to back up the chosen NAS. Really looking for Google Photos integration / familiarity , One Drive integration. Was looking at QNAP TS-133 / 233, Synology 224+, Terramaster F2-223.

WD Purple vs WD Red |

I have a Synology DS920+ in my homelab that is recording 4 5MP cameras 24/7. I also use the NAS for regular file back-ups and have some data protections in place: Snapshot Replication (for local recovery) and Hyper Backup (for a offsite backup).
I am currently running 3x WD Purple 6TB and 1x WD red 6TB, but I will replace them soon because I need more space.
My question: do I need WD Purple drives (because of the cameras) or WS Red driver (because of the regular stuff)? I have been searching this a lot, but can't get a answer.

Hi Everyone ,
Need some advice … I am trying to find a way to backup all my current / furfure systems … Currently I have a Windows 11 , Windows 10 , and a Truenas computer …
Right now my Windows computers backup to a 2 day Synology and the TrueNas backups to some USB drives I had laying around …
What I am trying to plan is a single box that will back everything that I can grab and run if my place ever catches on fire or something happens …
My plan was to get a Synology DS1621+ and have everything back up to that … But with the cost of it I am wondering if building something might be cheaper …
I already have hard drives I can use just need a case and the cast of the parts … Trying to keep it same and compact … So thought I would ask here for advice and see if anyone got back to me …
Thanks for the help …
