  Crystal Disk Mark varying scores
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-16-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, great in-depth analysis of the drives. I am wondering if you could give me a quick idea why my 2 new WD 18tb Red Pro drives have varying scores from week to week even after a reboot.

I posted to r/pcmasterrace with screenshots running CDM

Thank you.

  My first nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-16-2024, 04:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thanks for reading me.

Hello I plan to purchase my first home nas next months and am a bit confused with the requirements for a media server. Here are some infos I want and how ai want to use it.

-I may go for Jellyfin instead of plex.
- For now 2x 20TB max is necessary (I think) but of course having 4 disk slots would be best if I grow my library.
-I have 3Gbs internet connection
-Want to stream locally and create users for family and close friends (stream over internet).
-Some of family members don't have 4k tvs, or older led tvs. So transcoding might be good.
-Movies/series both 1080p and 4k will be present.
-Outisde streaming, I'd like to store personal images/videos, and documents.

Thanks again for your advices!

Hi, I am a fan of your video. I have a dell latitude 5490 to repourpose as nas. Is that doable? What os use? External drive? Was thinking to buy an external enclosure to put nvme to save space. The main use will be to run plex/jellyfin, and as cloud to replace google drive/photo to syncronise with my phone. Maybe learn so.e automatization for my home. Could you please ad ise on this project? Better to find an alternative used pc o build one with ised/cheap parts? In this case amd o intel processor?

  Mobo / SAS HBA recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-15-2024, 04:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am planning to set-up two Truenas Scale configurations as a file/photo/AV1 media server in a CS382b case (Jonsbo N5 is viable SATA when it ships in October) and a Corsair SF850L power supply each with Nine Seagate Mach.2 drives SAS or Sata partitioned into two drives. I would set-up two 6+2 RAIDZ2 pools. I would have hot swap drive with two partitions. If a drive fails then a single volume in each pool would need to be replaced by one of the volumes on the hot swap drive. Will this work?
If I go Sata, I would use either:

1) CWWK i3-N305 Purple board with Intel Arc A380 low profile card (It required PCIex8 bu tonlu has x4), or

2) CWWK 8845HS 9-bay NAS card.

3) new CWWK Q670 board with SFF-8643 PCIe x4 and a T series Intel CPU if I can source them.

Do you have a recommendation between them ?

If I go SAS, I would use motherboard #2 or #3 with LSI 9207-8i PCIex8 card and have the Hot swap drive connected by Sata. Is there a better mITX board, or is mATX necessary?

  NAS and network setup
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-15-2024, 02:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey, I'm looking to replace our current NAS setup. It is a QNAP TVS with 16TB of storage. We use the NAS for data storage for CAD files. We have 8 workstations connected to it that simultaneously use it for storage during design. Save and load times have slowed considerably since we have grown from our initial 3 work stations. What would be our best option here? Would using something with thunderbolt ports help with speed? I'd be happy to discuss via phone and pay you for your time if that would be easier. Thanks!

  2.5GB Switch and USB Adapter
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-15-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys,
Looking at purchasing an Synology DS1823xs+ and would like to upgrade from 1gb to 2.5gb 8 or 16 port unmanaged switch. maybe manged depending on price. We currently using computers with no ability to upgrade to the network cards, so USB adapters will be required.

Could I please get your current recommendations for suitable mid range switches and adapters? Amazon links would be nice so I can support you guys.

Many thanks

  Remote backup x tailscale
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-14-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I wrote you before for a recommendation and baught as 1520+.

I want to have a remote backup using Tailscale in a family member home versus paying yearly C2 costs. So I am looking for a 2 bay NAS that will work for this.
I looked at the 223j but it has limited software.
Should I go for the 2s4+ or a 223, I want to backup the computer in the other family house and have future hardware proofing. I will reuse my disks in my QNAP and just throw it away diskless.

Thanks in advance for you recommendation !

Any upgrades possible on the Asustor AS-302T ?
Posted by: Lood - 08-14-2024, 03:15 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (1)

I've had my AS-302T for several years now, and although it still works fine, I think it's time to upgrade.  Big Grin

Before I invest in a new (probably DIY) NAS, I would like to see if the AS-302T can be upgraded in any way.  I've searched far and wide (that's how I ended up on NAS Compares!), but haven't found anything about upgrades for the Asustor AS-302T yet.  I doubt I'd be able to do anything about the hardware (RAM specifically), but perhaps a change of OS??

Anyways, any help / pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks!

BTW - Currently running with 2 x WD Red 6Tb HDDs
