NAS Drive replacement - Enquiries - 06-29-2024

Hi,

I hv QNAP TS-453E. I bought WD 2TB RED Plus (Initially 2 WD20EFPX pieces). Because i had (WD20EFRX) from my previous "WD NAP Cloud". But unfortunately during it's synchronization, one of it started to show some bad blocks on it, and the syncing is taking like ages now.

I already bought 2 new WD20EFPX to replace them. Now the question is, Is it ok if I shutdown my QNAP and replace those 2 WD20EFRX drives with my new WD20EFPX?

Your support will be highly appreciated and I will be very thankful to you

Regards,

For your QNAP TS-453E, if one of your old WD20EFRX drives is showing bad blocks and causing prolonged sync times, replacing it is a smart move. Since you have already purchased the new WD20EFPX drives, you can proceed with the replacement. Here's what you need to do:

Wait for the Rebuild: If the NAS is currently attempting to synchronize, it's generally best to let it complete the rebuild process if possible, even if it's taking a long time. This ensures data integrity during the replacement.

Power Down Safely: Once the rebuild is complete (or if it's not feasible to wait due to the bad blocks), shut down your QNAP NAS safely through the QNAP interface to avoid any potential data corruption.

Replace One Drive at a Time: After powering down, replace one of the WD20EFRX drives with one of the new WD20EFPX drives. Power the NAS back on, and allow it to recognize and start rebuilding the RAID with the new drive. This process can take several hours depending on the amount of data and the RAID level you are using.

Repeat the Process: Once the first replacement drive is fully synchronized and the RAID is stable, shut down the NAS again and replace the second WD20EFRX drive with the second WD20EFPX. Power up and let the system rebuild once more.

This method minimizes risk and ensures that your data remains protected throughout the process. If you need detailed step-by-step guidance on the replacement, you can find more on QNAP’s official support site.
