Best NAS for home use |

Hello,
I'm a 73-year-old computer user who wants to install a simple NAS system so that I can back up my movie and movie collection and have them available for home viewing/listening. Also, I would like to have software available for my Android phone and Chromebook laptop to have these files available while I am away from home. I am looking for something simple to install, reliable and quiet that uses SSD drives.
Thank you for your time,
G

DS1522+ much louder than DS1019+ with same HDDs |

Hello everyone, I just finished migrating my NAS from a DS1019+ to a DS1522+ because I needed the ability to upgrade to 10 Gbit/s. The migration was smooth as butter: I took out the HDDs from the old NAS and inserted them in the new device in the same order and after powering on the DS1522+, I was greeted with the option to migrate the data and settings. Only thing left to do was to re-authenticate CloudSync with my Google account and to re-setup QuickConnect. Amazing how easy this went for a rather simple setup without too many apps. The new NAS seems snappy and since I don't need video transcoding, I don't mind the lack of an integrated GPU with hardware encoding capabilities for videos.
Now to the downside. I have 3x Seagate Exos X18 with 18 TB and 2x Seagate IronWolf with 6 TB that I yet have to upgrade. Before purchasing the Exos due to lack of space, I had 3x WD Red with CMR and 6 TB each. With all drive combinations, the DS1019+ was a bit loud for a home office environment due to a present humming. I swapped the original fans of the DS1019+ with Noctuas and the fans were barely making any noise even at full speed, though I kept them operating in the Cool mode. The humming noise was coming from the HDDs and while that was quite noticeable, the “clicking” noise when accessing data on the HDDs was in the low frequencies and seemed dampened. So it was never an issue really. One thing I learned from YouTube videos is that the humming noise can be reduced by using the fluffy side of Velcro strips in the drive trays. So before I migrated to the new NAS, I added strips inside the NAS where the drives were supposed to be inserted. The HDDs trays sit firmly, but you can still easily slide them in and out, so there isn't too much pressure. However, with the new NAS, while the humming noise is a bit lower (but still very present), the HDD access noise is way louder. To be honest, disk access is so loud that I first thought some drives went bad because I had to power them off for the migration.
Since both NAS enclosures are just about the same, do you have any idea why the drive access noises are so much louder with the DS1522+ compared to the DS1019+? Could it be due to the added Velcro strips? I wanted to avoid tearing them off again if you think it has nothing to do with it.

qnap tvs-h874 raid configuration advice using qts |

As I wait for my 3rd tvs-h874 to arrive after 2 DoA units in a row, I'm wondering what might be a good all-purpose config while using qts (for qtier). I have 2 2tb nvme, 4 2tb sata ssd, and 4 14tb hdd. With 1st doa, I had everything in qtier. On the 2nd doa, nvme in raid 1 were used for os and apps and planned qtier sata ssd/hdds, but errors happened before that was created. What config would you recommend for a mix of in-home streaming and backups, while leaving possible vms, proxy server, home sec cams, a dbase, etc.? Nvme raid 1 for os, apps, vms and all qtier; 2 sata ssd for cache and 2 ssd + 4 hdd qtier, ditch it all and go quts hero? The qtier appeal is automation. I'd also have to return some ssd's for smaller ones if I went with quts hero instead and caching due to mem constraint of 64gb is the listed bare min for 2tb cache. Thanks!!!

I am confused as to which UPS I need to purchase for my DS220+. I plan to plug in my router as well. I have been reading information on amazon and I have watched your videos on ups but I am totally as to what I am supposed to buy. I do not really understand how to figure out wattages or whatever. Hope you can give me some direction.
Thank you and I watch your You tube channel daily. I am learning.

Setuping first NAS for video editing with 2-3 computers |

Hi,
I'm tired of using multiple hard drives with the same project to render different things. I need a NAS or home cloud storage so I can work on the same media with my different computers.
I wish I had asked you first; however, now that I'm mid-way through this Nas rabbit hole, I don't understand how it works.
I have a Synology NAS DS1821+. I have (8) WD 18TB. I'm thinking of RAID 5. I want the storage size and speed. I have a dual port 10gbe card, the E10G18-T2.
I heard I needed a switch, so I invested in TP-Link TL-SX1008. After watching your video, I wondered if I needed a managed switch.
Now would like help setting it all up.

My business use if for 2 main users with access at home office and remotely.
Home use if for astrophotography hobby which requires processing large and 100’s of files. Each project can be as large as 500GB.
I use Macbook pro’s M1 and higher fast machines and benefit by high speed network or direct connection to NAS.
I will also have family use NAS for backup instead of using the cloud.
Thanks. I love your Youtube channel and with all the options feel a little overwhelmed. I like the Asustor brand.

I currently have a TS453b which I have had for 6-7 years, this has now failed with the red flashing light of doom. I have tried everything but it does not boot and QNAP have said we can repair for nearly £400 - WOW. So it's time to look for a new one.
If im honest I dont really use it for multimedia, it's pretty much all for backups but I want something that wont be a bottleneck on my network. I currently have a Unifi network, UDM Pro, Switch and cameras and the UDM Pro had the drive for the cameras.
Sorry for the long winded message.
Love the YouTube videos by the way
Cheers

Advice on NAS to buy |

Hello! I am new to the NAS world. I have been doing some research to figure out what is the best NAS for my needs. My primary use would be to move most of my family photos (from HDDs, phones and some from GPhotos) to it and start backing up there so I don't need to keep increasing Google storage (most probably will use Immich as it sounds to be the closest to GPhotos). The NAS will also be used for password manager hosting and files backup (like Gdrive) for now. I will also need to access it outside of home if needed (for example to share photos). The Synology seems to be the best OOTB but it costs around 620euros without HDDs, the Terraform is way cheaper (around 250euros) but seems to have bad software (would need to flash something like TrueNAS), QNAP seems to have security issues software is not as good as DSM. I can build if needed, but I am unsure what are the best and low power parts to buy or even what OS to add. Any ideias?

Cheap NAS for home |

I have 2 Sonos. I don't use Spotify or similar. I have a USB HDD with all my music on it. For years I've been streaming my music from it by plugging it into USB port on my router. Sonos have, among much else that they've deliberately crippled in their latest software update, finally made it so that it can't use SMB1. Since my router is limited to this, it has no access to my music.
I understand that a better solution is a NAS device. I've been aware of them for a while but as long as Sonos just worked I had no incentive to change. Now I do.
Ideally, I'd just like to do two things:
1. stream the music I had on my HDD to my Sonos by sharing it with an SMB2... thing.
2. be able to back up the contents of my desktop machine, which has about a terabyte of storage.
Ideally, I think I'd like a RAID with two 1Tb drives. Will that do the job? Right now I stream movies I have on my desktop machine to my Roku or PS4 with DLNA - can a NAS serve these?
Please advise. Thanks.
