  New Request?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello there,

I see your answer on my further message
https://nascompares.com/answer/nas-for-editing-with-capture-11-one-pro/

Still not moved on my side.
I got elsewhere advice that for a normal use, link agregation is not a solution (private / non commercial user, router is a Fritzbox, not able to manage that without further expenses)

Last point is that I would really prefer Synology and not QNAP, So what would be your advice on Synology, and any point of comparison to QNAP?

Regards
Christof

QNAP NAS as Media HUB (4K and 1080p)?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, and happy Easter!
I hope you are well and coping well with the COVID 19.

I am planning to move from a DAS to a NAS for my media collection. The plan is to use the NAS mostly for 1080p and 4K HDR videos with True-HD and DTS-MA audio and stream them to a Sony 4K player UBP-X700. Other uses will be for images, and stream audio to my receiver. I already own two 10 TB NAS driver Toshiba N300.

The main use will be access to the NAS from one device at the time (the player or the receiver) and maybe access the NAS from outside when travelling for downloading or moving files.

I was thinking about either the QNAP TS251B or D. I understood the differences between the two, by watching your videos and reading. The D is a better product, especially for the PCLe slot and HDMI, in addition to newer components and faster RAM. However, I will probably not invest in the future in a 10GbE network (I will connect all to the BT Smart Hub), although I may decide to buy in the future a card for SSD caching. My two questions are: are they both capable to give a smooth experience, especially for the streaming of 4K movies, as I didn’t find “real tests” examples online? And, considering the use primarily as Media player, would it be a better option to get a 251B and invest in more RAM or go directly the D?
Many thanks!
Antonio

  Which is NAS for me...?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

PLEASE HELP,

I'm 65 so no spring chicken... few years ago purchased a NETGEAR unit and it just lay in a corner....

Very recently purchased a new boxed WD EX-2 Ultra containing a pair of WD Red 4TB drives

I use both Windows PC and Apple MacBook Pro 16"

Have been advised by a friend that the WD is not the way forward and that I should have purchased a QNAP or a Synology...

Also now looking at various links it seems MAC users are not happy with WD.

So...I could keep my drives and put the bare bones EX-2 Ultra oneBay

Kind regards,

Ranjit

  2 Bay DAS or NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi

I have been looking at loads of your excellent videos and I am still unsure what to get. I currently run a 4TB WD external USB drive and 3 portable drives to back up my Movies and the 3 portable for Photos, Time Machine, and complete iMac Backup. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to do all the scheduled backups. I was going to get a 2 bay DAS but getting mixed reviews on reliability on all of them.

My iMac is a late 2013 21.5inch model with a 1 TB hybrid drive, Thunderbolt 1 ports and USB 3.

I would use the DAS/NAS just for backups and Plex to my TV across the LAN I have in my house. So my thinking was I dont need or would probably use a lot of the features of a NAS but like the network attached element. To be fair I leave my iMac on most of the time so a DAS does not present an availability issue in that respect. Transcoding would be preferred to future proof it but as I dont have a 4k TV I am more than happy with 1080p HD at the moment.

To me a DAS, which one ?, would make sense for ease of use but I am torn so your advice would be much appreciated and recommended models or either

NAS for 3d, After Effects, Editing, and Online Grading in Resolve?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hey

We are creative studio production high end trailers for the the games industry. We currently have a 10gbe Mac mini connected to a Promise R8 32 GB to provide shared storage. Performance has been variable. Workstations are all new Mac Pros. We are in the market for a very robust and scalable storage solution that is preferably not too loud. We don't have a dedicated server room at the moment. Needs to be fast, and responsive for up to 10 concurrent users.

Any tips?

Which NAS box is practial for a File server and a GIT Server for colaborative software development?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

I'm looking to get a NAS for 2 reasons.

1. The first is for safe storage of files, including videos and photos, and work.
2. The second is for a colaborative project where I'll need a GIT server installed on the NAS, so that between 10 to 30 people can work on the projects and save their cahnges to the GIT server.

Originally I was very fond of the Asustor AS5403T, based on your review, but that was before I considered the use for a GIT server. There seems to be no information on what NAS server I should use based on the project repository size, or the number of users that will access it, specifically in terms of the memory required on teh NAS box.

I'd love to get any recommendation.

Regards,
Sijmen.
