  Shared folder?
Posted by: joistguy - 07-26-2020, 09:19 PM - Forum: Home Multimedia - Replies (1)

I've followed several of your video tutorials and set up my DS220+. Can you help please? I have created a shared folder on the NAS and mapped it to Z : on my PC and I want to use this folder to be my main working folder for photo editing with photoshop and luminar. I also want to be able to show those photos on my TV on the same network but the TV will only see the 3 Media Server created folders "photo", "video" and "music". I don't want to have to copy the photos from the shared folder to the media folder. Am I missing something? Thanks for a great series.

  Creative professional - first NAS?
Posted by: samw - 07-26-2020, 05:32 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi NAS compares - the site has been really useful - thank you

So I am about to need to sort out my storage and I think I need to move up to a NAS - below are some current details
I am a small outfit creative professional (artist / graphic designer) - so have large project files that need access to (but not across large groups)
Currently I have a macbook pro with a nearly full 1tb SSD in the machine.

I use a 3TB Toshiba external hard drive for time machine and + store photos
and a 4TB Seagate external hard drive for time machine and + store photos
So I guess I've been using these USB external drives like a primitive RAID 1.
I am looking to free up my SSD on my macbook and then use a NAS as my working machine. I suspect that I will need increase the amount of space I am using at present (so 4 or 6 TB ? this I am unsure and happy to take advice..) and maybe use something like RAID 5 system ? Again happy to take advice.
Thanks , Sam

  NAS Reliability during lifespan?
Posted by: KalenWyler - 07-26-2020, 03:24 PM - Forum: NAS Security - Replies (1)

Researching NAS solutions from major NAS vendors and found several mentions of unit failures. This made me very nervous about the quality control of the major NAS vendors. I want to ask the collective wisdom of the community what their experiences have been. I am I just seeing the malcontents, or is quality a concern, if it is a concern is one major vendor more rigorous about testing units???

Wd Red vs Seagate Ironwolf for Synology 220+?
Posted by: toeinnas - 07-19-2020, 07:04 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Given all the great advice you have given over the years, I am about to buy my first "real" NAS, the Synology DS220+. My question is: should I buy WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf for the Synology?

I was originally thinking that a pair of 6TB would be good for what I need the NAS to do, but with the WD SMR/CMR issue, I'm now looking at 8TB drives to eliminate that issue. Please can you give guidance on whether the 7200RPM Seagates are more reliable than the 5400RPM WDs? Do they make more noise (the DS220+ will be next to my router in the living room)? Use more power? For backup and media server, any differences?

Any guidance would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

  CPU Allocation when VM stopped?
Posted by: marc12*10 - 07-14-2020, 12:58 AM - Forum: Virtual Machines/ Docker - Replies (2)

Hi, I have a DS918+ with 16GB of ram. I have a couple of docker containers for Pihole and Plexpy and I also have a VDSM using 1gb of memory and 1 CPU Core.

I have just installed windows 10 (using your excellent YouTube video!) and allocated it 1 CPU core and 2gb of memory, along with 100gb of storage.

If I have all this running and want to watch a 4K film on Plex, am I pushing the envelope a bit? If so, would stopping the Windows 10 VM give me back the CPU and/or memory I allocated it?

Synology Ds918+ and iPhone sync trouble?
Posted by: Tubear - 07-10-2020, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there.

First I must say I just love ur videos on YouTube! Very informative, straight forward and No hassle.

Have a question for you, a problem I can't sort out. Have been searching all over the web and YouTube but can't seem to find a solution for this. Please also consider making a video on this topic.

I resently bought a Synology Ds918+. I have a Samsung S9 and my wife an iPhone 8. I have downloaded the Moments app on both phones. On my android the backup/syncing of photos and videos happens smoothly in the background, but on the iPhone you actually have to have the app open for the phone to sync. If you exit the app to do something else it stops syncing.

Is there a way to fix this? This actually ruins the use of the app because u litterally have to go in to the Moments app everytime u take a new photo.

I hope u take the time to help me out.

Qnap TS-231K vs Synology DS220j - Does TS-231K worth the extra cost?

I am looking for a budget NAS solution and was wondering which device offers better performance/features for the money and if it worth paying the extra money for the QNAP model?

Status Red Light Blinks - Every couple seconds - TS653B?
Posted by: tokyojerry - 07-07-2020, 11:44 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Status Red Lamp blinks even after ejecting all 6 drives. Fans? Mainboard?

The NAS is getting close to full, but not full. At least 1TB of space remains at last check. The 6-bays configured:
1-4 6TB x 4 = 24TB, RAID5 (18TB usable)
5-6 10TB x2 = 20TB, RAID0 (20TB usable, striping, backup for 1-4 RAID5 array)

I have ejected all 6 disks but the TS-653B still blinks with Status red lamp. So, this leads me to think, (a) the fans are bad, or (b) the unit's mainboard is bad. I have had the device for a couple of years now and up until yestereday I was able to use it normally. I have power set to automatically shutdown the NAS every evening at 2400 until whenever I decide to turn it on the following day, being the only user.
Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Is it possible to create a Windows Desktop Shortcut to a VM?
Posted by: zippypinhead - 07-07-2020, 05:46 PM - Forum: Virtual Machines/ Docker - Replies (2)

I ported an existing WMware Windows VM into Synology VM Mgr per your very helpful video (thank you!). Now wondering if there's a way to make a Windows Desktop shortcut to the VM, though with the need to Power it on, then Connect, I cannot imagine how this would be possible. Figured I'd check with you.
