  Best NAS for client/vm automated backup?
Posted by: tecnorama - 04-09-2021, 09:06 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there, I'am looking for a new nas for my SMB office (10-15 client pc, 2 phisical servers and 2 virtual machine). I'am a QNAP nas adopter with a first really satifatory experience with a TS-259 Pro (still working) and another one really worsth with a TS-453A who completly dead after less than 2 years of work.
Now I'am looking for a better stable and upgradable solution for file sharing and centralized backup and I'am interested in Synology DS1621+ or QNAP TS-673A-8G.

I like to try the newer ZFS filesystem proposed from QNAP but the Synology Active Backup for Business suite seems to offer more complete backup solution.

So my questions:
- There is a integrated baremetal backup solution for windows clients also for QNAP nas? Currently I'am using the QNAP NetBak Replicator for backup file folders from clients but the Synology suite seems to be most complete.
- The Synology Active Backup for Business could backup also the free Esxi Hypervisor VM or only vSphere solution?
- The ZFS filesystem offers some real advantages in the client/server backup procedures?
Thank you for your time!
Regards

  DS920 POE Switch and Reolink Cameras?
Posted by: RSF - 04-08-2021, 12:49 PM - Forum: Networks - Replies (1)

I have a DS920+ with a Netgear GS108 v3 connected to the Lan2 Port - I am trying to run 2 x Reolink RLC-423-5MP and 1 x RLC-520 but neither camera connects - I am powering the cameras with 12v PSU's - Without 12v power, neither camera shows any infra-red response - If I connect the camera (powered) directly via RJ45 there is no difference - When an RJ45 is connected, the Network Status shows: 100Mbps, Full duplex, MTU 1500 - I have a Synology Router attached to LAN1. - Do I need to uprgade the switch, move the switch or something else? - Cheers Richard

  10Gbs Network Speeds SMB?
Posted by: louiebalko - 04-05-2021, 11:02 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Well this not acctually a question but rather a helpul tip for you guys out there trying to fix the speeds of your new 10Gbs network with Synology. I tried everything but never got over 2-3gbs (220/400 Mb/s).

But at last i found a little setting hidden for changing to SMB3. And viola! I now get speeds of write 400mb/s read 800mb/s. Where it should be regarding to my hardware.

So please see attached image where you can fix this setting.
You´re welcome!

  Virtual Machines + Data Server | QNAP TS-h973AX or TS-673A or TS-873A ?
Posted by: qsorrbkqqzs - 03-29-2021, 10:14 AM - Forum: Virtual Machines/ Docker - Replies (1)

[QUESTIONS] ||
- which NAS among these 3 NAS would you recommend for my below usage? || Happy to consider other NAS too (not rackmount, however) ||
- how should I set up the discs so as to achieve maximum performance from Virtual Machine? (e.g. creating a separate volume with M.2 SSD / U.2 NVMe / SSD to where Virtual Machines will be saved and run?) Plan to install 64Gb RAM and willing to upgrade PCIe peripherals such as M.2 SSD / U.2 NVMe / Display Card / 10Gb LAN if necessary. ||
- which display card under QNAP's Comparability List would you recommend for my usage? ||

[USAGE] ||
1. Virtual Machines for Windows (which will be my main, daily OS) and Linux, occasional photo and video editing, gaming (e.g. GTA, FIFA) ||
2. data storage & private cloud storage, with remote accessibility (~10TB and growing. RAID 5 or higher, two disc redundancy) ||
3. will re-purpose my current Synology DS412+ as an offsite backup server to this new NAS ||
4. hoping to create a future-proof set up ||

[NETWORK SETUP] ||
- will upgrade to Wifi 6(E) soon. 1Gb broadband for internet access ||
- utilizing Virtual Machine with laptop over Wifi. Occasionally docking the laptop so as to use a desktop monitor, mouse and keyboard, also over Wifi. Can consider a wired network connection if necessary. ||

Please excuse my newbie questions. Thank you very much for your time answering my questions.

  2 bay seems to have better spec than 4 bay model?
Posted by: mrwishes - 03-25-2021, 02:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

The TS-253D has a PCIe 2x4 slot, while the TS-453D has a 2x2.
The TR-002 expansion unit has a SATA3 6Gbps controller, whereas the TR-004 only a has a SATA 2 3Gbps controller, or is that not correct? TR-002 has USB 3.2 Gen2 , TR-004 has USB 3.2 Gen1.

I bought the TS-453D knowing the difference on the PCIe slot ahead of time, now reading the fine print on the expansion units. I haven't decided what to use my PCIe slot for.

To me buying into old SATA 2 technology, PCie 2x2 USB 3.x Gen 1, DDR3, etc is undesirable. Is SATA2 ok? USB 3.2 Gen1 ok? Where is the performance bottleneck I should concern myself with?
Why have a lesser spec on the 4 bay unit? to save a few bucks. I think it only leads to frustrated users that have researched the 2 bay unit but decided to up their budget. Call the 4 bay model something different but make the specs the same if using TS-x53D and TR-00x.

  Is anyone actually getting 4K 60hz with their TS-x53D?
Posted by: mrwishes - 03-25-2021, 02:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have 2 different 4K TVs (2018 Samsung QN65Q6FN and ~2015 LG 55UF6450 using Ultra Deep Color on HDMI1) , and no luck getting 4K 60hz with my TS-453D. With a laptop I have no such issues, using the same cables, with soundbar or without. With the Samsung I do get 1920x1080@120hz though which surprised me.

  Compatibility?
Posted by: ed - 03-22-2021, 04:09 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Yes, you should be able to connect both at the same time- USB and SATA expansion.The limits are set based on USB ports and maximum hard drive count in a RAID. This CPU is not made to cope with too big RAIDs.I hope this helps.Model NameForm FactorInterfaceMaximum Connected NumberNoteTL-D1600STowerSATA 6Gb/s (SFF-8088)1TL-D400STowerSATA 6Gb/s (SFF-8088)1TL-D800CTowerUSB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-C)1TL-D800STowerSATA 6Gb/s (SFF-8088)1TL-R1200C-RPRackmountUSB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-C)1TL-R1200S-RPRackmountSATA 6Gb/s (SFF-8088)1TL-R400SRackmountSATA 6Gb/s (SFF-8088)1TR-002TowerUSB 3.2 Gen 2 (Type-C)2TR-004TowerUSB 3.2 Gen 1 (Type-C)2TR-004URackmountUSB 3.2 Gen 1 (Type-C)2

  QNAP TS-873A (64GBRAM): QuTS: SSD system pool / SSD cache?
Posted by: steinradler - 03-20-2021, 08:32 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

What is more sufficient? SSD cache or SSD system pool? If I´m right when I do install first a RAID 1 with two M2 SDD this will be the system pool. Every NAS App will be installed on this device. If I just insert RAID 5 HDD this will be the system pool. How is to calculate the size of this M.2 SSD. Would be nice if VM´s, Containers would run as well on SSD system pool. For a SSD cache in Read only a older SSD SATA drive should work as well? Thx

  QNAP TS-873A (64GBRAM): QuTS: benefitts of PCIe GPU?
Posted by: steinradler - 03-20-2021, 08:32 PM - Forum: Virtual Machines/ Docker - Replies (2)

What are the advantages of GPU expansion? In conjunction with virtualization and containers what exactly does it bring and is it worth it?
Is only the graphics performance passed on to the VM's or is the computing power also supported? Or what other benefits does it bring? Thanks
