I am a first time NAS buyer for my home use. I am looking mainly for storage for my music collection & photos. Also to access my storage remotely. I also want to remove some of the strain from my laptop. I have ordered the qnap ts-230 & am waiting delivery. I am now rethinking that maybe I should have purchased the synology 218 or doubled up the price & purchased the synology 220+ ? I realize the 220+ has a faster intel processor & can expand the ram. What benefits will the 220+ provide to me? I will not need anything more than 2 bay.
What would you recommend that I look at purchasing?

So, I have a dead Acer H340 that had Win Home Server. I loved the software and it was as simple or complex as you wanted to make it.
I was wanting to have a NAS that worked much like WHS.
Here is what I would like it to do in order of priority.
*Back up Windows 10 computer (Images as well as file History). I have had instances of computers crashing and losing Data. I just don't have time to reload programs and reset up.
I have AutoCad and Revit for drafting which are huge files.
*I would like backups to happen in the background in the evening so I don't slow computer during office hrs.
*Cloud access would be preferred but not necessary.
*Plex would be nice to stream movies I have on the hardrive of my Acer H340 TS video files
*iTunes server is a nice to not a have to.
I want a unit that can use low power when idle.
I am open to a Windows 10 computer that I can just use and install 4 HardDrives and then use storage pools from windows but that may not be the most efficient use of a computer/energy use.
Are there any suggestions that you can provide me with?

I am getting ready to build a 4k Plex server. I want a mostly prebuilt solution that I can add drives to and be off an running. I do like the idea of SHR or Drobo's beyond raid to add storage down the road. What are your suggestions for building a long term 4k Plex server?

Which provider has the best phone sync app? |

I'm ready to move from Enthusiast to Customer.
No more juggling Docker containers and gluing with scripts.
For me the killer feature is automatic backup of photos from 5 Android phones.
I've tried Owncloud, Nextcloud and Syncthing but never really felt relaxed.
For a while the Plex phone app looked promising until is was revealed that
the app had to be active for the sync to run.
Here's my workflow: When a phone takes a picture or shoots a video, it should automatically be sent to the NAS.
Shortly after, the other phones connected to the same NAS, can see the new photo/video - either in their own app or in a web gui.
I don't need my NAS for surveillance, transcoding, torrenting.
Which provider has the best phone app (Exclusively Android).
Very much appreciated!

Upgrading from DS220j to DS720+? |

Hi Folks. Currently I have a Synology DS220j for my Plex Media Server, however, recently, I noticed that its lagging while playing videos. I've concluded based on research that it's having trouble transcoding. Is this correct and if so, should I upgrade to the DS220+ or as a future proof solution, upgrade to the DS720+. What are your thoughts on this since video is going in the direction of 4K?

Synology HAT5300 Review: Requests and Recommendations? |

Robbie, in the upcoming videos related to the Synology HAT5300 drive, please consider exploring the following topics.
[1] Is the Synology HAT5300 8TB drive considerably louder than the 12TB model? Assuming that Synology HAT5300-8T = Toshiba MG06 and HAT5300-12T = MG07, the acoustic specifications (idle) published by Toshiba are 34db versus 20db.
[2] Will the Synology HAT5300 16TB drive be approved for use in a DiskStation NAS? At present, the Synology HAT5300-16T only appears in the Synology Products Compatibility List for RackStation units.
[3] Please compare a Synology HAT5300-8T against a Toshiba MG06, to contrast the performance of the ‘same’ hardware with different firmware.
[4] When examining the performance of a Synology HAT5300 drive, please vary the number of simultaneous clients in a multi-user RAID environment. According to Synology’s data sheet for the HAT5300, the drive does not deliver better performance than others when the number of clients is few.
Thank you.

Viewing and linking subfolders to media libraries using PLEX? |

I have purchased a Synology NAS and am trying to set it up as a PLEX media server. I have followed the instructions in the video you created (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNyTasDcVVc) and got to the point of linking the media type subfolders to each media library I am creating in PLEX. However, when I use the PLEX application on the NAS and try to point at the subfolder, I can only see the top level shared folder and not the media type subfolders I have created (movies, music, TV shows, and photos). Any idea why I cannot see these subfolders? I have tried refreshing, restarting the application, deleting/recreating the folders without success. Thanks for your help.

How may I validate / Certify individual HDDs during my QNAP setup. (Would like to start by making sure all new individual HDDs are in perfect working order and was not damaged during shipment etc. Would prefer a complete Read/Write verification test of all data blocks available through DAS products such as SoftRaid.
BTW: I am setting up a new QNAP TVS-872XT with 8 Seagate Exos 14TB drives in RAID-6
