QNAP NAS TS-253D - POWER POE CAMERA
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2022, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi have a NAS QNAP TS-253D
I have bought a HIKVISION ds‑2cd2347g1.
I was wondering if the Qnap can power the camera which is a POE camera directly via the RJ45 cable directly, or will i need a POE device to power it?

Synology DS1821+ & Plex Server set up.
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2022, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey team!
Been watching your vids for a while and would really love some advice around my intent to get an 8-bay DS1821+ NAS.
I already have 6 Shuckable 12TB drives I'm going to put in, and got 32gb of RAM on it's way too.
I'm not stuck with the issue with creating a PLEX Server from the machine to be a media centre for all my data.
As I currently have all my data on single storage HDD's on my gaming rig (8+ drives) haha. But that's the intent to get this synology 8 bay array for my storage. I'll be running SHR-2 so I can be a bit more dynamic with my drives, as getting the high capacity drives as back ups will take time over time.

But yeah I'm concerned about Transcoding, due to the CPU being the bottleneck because of the Ryzen CPU, and even the new Xeon model not having a inbuilt GPU.

So here's where I'm at a loss. As I want to get a 10Gbit network card for greater read/write speeds. But also considered a fanless GPU to pop instead as an alternative to help with transcoding. Drawback to that will be the network card being missing, and that also comes with an if transcoding will become a bottleneck.

It'll be all hooked up to my Ubiquiti gear, which is no bottleneck there.

Thought process is to get a network card, and use an external source for transcoding.

What am I streaming to? Mainly my new 2021 QLED 4k TV, and a laptop or two. - Which won't need 4k obviously.
I'd still like to watch movies on my PC, but my PC is directly connected to the network, and it's normally always on away (something I considered to host the plex server). - But I also don't want my PC (gaming) to be depended upon that side of things.

In saying that, the intent to play movies via VLC is still an option which wouldn't cause this problem, but then obvious media centre stuff. - Which I could just have Plex for my TV. - Potentially 2-3 TV's in future.

Let me know your thoughts, and really would love some of your insight.
Also I considered a NUC or a USB NUC to plug into the NAS, if that's an option to help transcode things as an alternative.

Keen to hear back, and thanks again!

  QNAP TVS-h874 vs TVS-h1688x
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2022, 05:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm very close to purchasing the TVS-h1688X with 12 18TB HDD, but with the new TVS-h874 in the mkt (atleast the i5 version, where I am), I'm having to rethink, if I should wait for the i7 or the i9 version of TVS-h874.

It all started with me close to getting the TVS-h872 (with i7), which seems to be now available only with i5, primarily because of the older file system (which helps in the overall scheme of things, I felt) and the HDMI 2.0, but then got a pretty reasonable price for the TVS-h1688X, which I had almost finalized, but then the TVS-h874 with i5 is now available at a lower price as well, with PCI Gen4 and better integrated graphics (770 vs P630).

Wanted your opinion if it makes sense to wait for the TVS-h874 with a i7 or i9 processor or the TVS-h1688X is future proof enough. I'm also more inclined to have more ram than Nvme for cache (considering the reliability issues) and the TVS-h1688X can take max 128GB vs 64GB in the TVS-h874.

The purpose is primarily data backup, media storage, planning on adding surveillance cams in the future and am more concerned about longer term reliability. I was also having my concerns how the 12gen i5/i7/i9 processors (not usually designed for 24/7 use) fare against the Xenon W-1250 processor (designed for server use, i.e. 24/7 use), from a reliability standpoint.

I already have over 50GB of data accumulated over the last two decades and wanted to have a RAID system with two HDD for parity and have over 100GB available space (hence the 8bay min). I had also finalized 18TB drives (Ultrastar DC HC550). Also in the back of my mind, the TVS-h872 with i5 is also hanging by a thread....

  Synology Photos edit
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2022, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Synology photo app does not have any basic editing like crop, brightness and so on. Is there a way to install app thought a docker to be able edit photos internally on the nas. I do not want move them to desktop to edit and back.
Or do you know the alternative way to edit photos and videos inside nas?

  Synology ds220j issue
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-08-2022, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a ds220j that I’ve had for about a year and a half and have 2 seagate ironwolf 94tb0 drives in it. About 4 months ago I get a message saying drive 1 went bad so I replaced it. All went well till a few weeks ago when I got the same message. Thinking now it may be the unit and not the drive. Thought I’d give it one more shot. I ordered a new drive but in the mean time I removed drive 1 and reformatted it and tried to put it back in but the ds220j would not recognize it. Today the new drive came and I installed it but it was not recognized at first but then it would pop up intermittently in storage manager. At this point I thought it may be bad connection so I shut it down and reseated the drive and started it up again be the same issue, it would intermittently show up in storage manager and when I hit repair it would disappear.
Have you heard of this type of issue with other ds220j’ s?
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Thanks so much for any help you can provide!
Love your videos, a ds923+ is in my future.

replacement for old 4 bay readynas and old pc running sonarr/sabnzb/universial media server/plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-07-2022, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Im looking to replace an old readynas 4 bay unit and also an old pc that runs my sonarr/sabnzb/plex/universal media server.
I want to be able to have all that run on the new NAS so can retire the old pc. current nas has 4 2tb drives in it, i was thinking of uping to maybe 4tb drives, Which drives should i go with (WD, Seagate, ?) ? also which unit would be able to do this easiest with least amount of jerry rigging. would that be the synology 920+ or the new 923 or should i go with the qnap ts-464 ? thanks for the help

  Which Synology NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-07-2022, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi,
I've been following your channel for quite some time now, always thinking I should start my own NAS at home, but never really got to it. Thanks for providing all this very valuable information to the public.
I was eagerly anticipating the 922 (which then became 923) launch during the course of this year when eventually the 1522 model came out. Now with the 923+ also out, I'm divided between the two.
Which would you recommend getting? The price tag difference is about 100€, so not so relevant... seems to me that getting that extra e-SATA port which will provide further expansion capability, plus 8G of RAM instead of 4G make the 1522 more appealing, but then there's the SSD storage pool leaning towards the 923.
Looking forward for you feedback, best regards,
Luís

  Which NAS to buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-06-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello
I am a computer hobbyist, I already have a Synology DS716+II dual bay NAS. I have all my family pictures and important documents, all my installed apps etc. etc. -basically EVERYTHING on it. It is 10TB but almost full. I am a bit paranoid about backing it up in case something happens to the NAS itself. I am not sure if a 4 or 5 bay NAS would be the answer. I was told that the 5 bay will give me better protection as well as more memory. I would also like to stream videos off the NAS in the future.
Can you please recommend a model for me?
I appreciate your reply.
Thank you

  Asus XG-C100C 10G networkd adapter
Posted by: AmproMedia - 12-06-2022, 04:51 PM - Forum: Networks - Replies (3)

Hi all,

Hope you are all well.  :-)

I've got a Synology 1821+ NAS and I fitted the Synology 10 Gbe card to it a while back. I then fitted an Asus XG-C100C 10G network adapter to my PC to set up 10 Gbe networking with my NAS. I have got the network up and running and it's plenty fast enough to edit live in daVinci Resolve Studio, so I'm fairly happy with the whole thing.

BUT,

I could have sworn when I first set it up, it was running at 10 Gbe and now it appears to only run at 5 Gbe. I have tried switching various settings within Win10-64 for the network card but I can't seem to make the NAS or my PC report it as a 10 Gbe connection.

Does anyone know a trick to get this card set up and running at full speed? I am still running the mainboard onboard 1 Gbe network connection to my 1 Gbe switch, but my Asus 10 Gbe card is connected directly to my Synology card. The Synology DSM software reports the speed as 5000 Mbps, Full Duplex, MTU 9000. The only reference to jumbo frames in the Asus driver I can find allows me to set it to MTU 9014 bytes.

Any help or suggestions, much appreciated.

Kind regards, A.

  Home User 4 Bay
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-06-2022, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Dear Nas Compares Team,

First of all, thanks for all of the extensive reviews. They have been very informative for me. However I am still torn of what to do as I am about to properly start my NAS adventure for the home.

You say that the more details help with the recommendations so I'll start at the beginning.
I wasn't sure if I really needed a NAS but having been through many fights to rescue data (usually photos) off of failing laptops etc. I have ended up with a mess of data over the years having quickly made back ups and never finding the time to properly sort them). I spoke with a friend of mine who recommended I started thinking about redundancy and recommended a NAS (there was of coure more to that conversation liek me wanting to store videos etc. and being able to stream to my TV, Music to the Echo etc.). He had an old Synology DS114 knocking around which he said I could borrow to give it a whirl if working with a NAS is an option for me. I was conviced a private NAS is a good thing and ended up buying the unit off him for a small amount of Euros but of course with a one bay I am lacking the redundancy.

So far, my biggest success was getting a decent setup for me and my wife to backup our photos to the NAS and free up space on our phones via Synology Photos and then mirroring the photos onto an external drive as a backup. In the end I do however want to have a proper setup with shares, potentially a media server (or whatever the solution is to stream vids and music around the house and of course with our three kids getting bigger, getting phones, doing school work on their computers etc I want to make sure there is a clear clean setup and backup possibility and of course redundancy is a must.

Currently I would say the biggest use case of working directly off the NAS would be sorting through our masses of photos and creating photo books. I can't see the actual photo editing nor video editing being a big issue soon. Otherwise I think a classic "My documents" location for saving school work etc would be the other main use case.

As I said, on top of this, ideally I figure out later how best to manage my music collection so I can stream it in the house and also make my videos available to watch via whichever device I choose. I may also offer up some space for the in-laws who live in the same building but they won't be intensive users (might add another 2-3 users on top, more for pure back up though)

Having been happy with Synology (primarily because of DSM) I was looking now into the DS920+ or the DS923+ and although your reviews were a great help, I am still stuck.

With the 923 going towards Enterprise I am worried I am going away from what I need. I am also not quite sure how to judge the AMD vs Intel discussion when it comes to my use cases described above (maybe it doesn't even play a role). The 920 seems a great option but budget argument is not a deal breaker for me (only 100€ difference right now where I am looking) and I am also worried about the future readiness and DSM support of the 920.

For either units I would be filling them with 4x 4TB WD RED (WD40EFzX) with most likely a raid 5 Setup (12TB) or potentially a raid 6 (8GB). Not yet sure.

I work in IT, but on an application level rather than infrastructure so I am not at all a netzy which is why the DSM is favorable to me. However, I have had no other experience at all with other makes of NAS.

Please let me know if there is any other information I should provide, otherwise I can't wait to for any input you have to offer. Even if it is other considerations to take before making my decision.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Scott

p.s. lets also not forget I would then have the old 1Bay sitting around, what would you guys do with that? Pure backup? THANKS
