Best choice for home use NAS |

Hi,
I was doing some research on buying a NAS for my home use. This is my first NAS purchase and I'm pretty new to the world of NAS. As of now, I am thinking of using it for storing my media (and host it via Plex), a couple of docker containers with my own services, home-assitant and probably pi-hole and my plan is to buy a four bay system and add four 8TB drives to start with. My media library does have a lot of 4K HEVC content, so the new AMD based Synology NAS don't seem to be the best option. I had finally shortlisted Synology DS920+ and QNAP TS-464. I need your help in choosing one of these two. I am a software developer, so I am okay with having not so friendly UI to interact with the system and keep my system up to date. I have listed my thoughts regarding both below.
Synology DS 920+:
Advantages:
- Tried and tested solution, been in the market long enough to know it is reliable
- DSM looks pretty user friendly
- Good discounts available these days
Disadvantages:
- 1gbe connectivity seems slow
- Future proofing maybe an issue because it is an old model
QNAP TS-464:
Advantages:
- Connectivity looks amazing
- Better processor
Disadvantages:
- Availability (it is not listed in amazon.in yet)
- Security issues (Although I can try to keep my system up to date, the number of times QNAP gets attacked is worrisome)
Regarding the security of QNAP systems, would it help if I use cloudflare tunnels to expose my Plex and other services outside my network? I feel that the connectivity of DS920+ is really bad. I don't want to spend more on costly managed switches and use link aggregation, but I like everything else about it.
What is your suggestion for my usecase?

Looking for advice on a server compatible with MAC/PC for professional-level editing. I'd like to have 4~ TB's of the highest speed storage for ingestion from camera's and 4k editing. The rest of the storage can be a bit slower to be transferred to nightly. Most projects would be 4k projects, short films and youtube videos primarily.
Thanks!

NVME upgrade card for qnap ts-453d |

I currently run a qnap ts-453d NAS based on your recommendations (Thanks!) It is used specifically as Plex server and filled with 4 12TB drives for storage. You have suggested I might get a even better experience if I were to add an NVME card and M.2 storage for caching. Given the age on my system (2 years) can you suggest a Card to add to this NAS as well as some M.2 choices? I see QNAP makes several choices with different Gens. I don't want to buy one that is Gen4+ if Gen2 spec limits my choices. I'm just trying to see if this is a worthwhile upgrade. Cheers! John

Hi, I'm currently experiencing super slow transfer speeds from my laptop to my NAS using Windows file explorer at around 25mbs over wifi. No matter what I do I cannot seem to exceed this speed. I have a dell 7620 laptop which is WiFi 6e and an asustor lockers 6702 gen 2. I am using the 2.5gbe port on my nas which is connected to the 2.5bge port on my Asus router which is WiFi 6. In my nas I have 2 8tb ironwolf drives in a raid 1 config and 2 WD red 512gb nvmw drives setup as read/write cache. I also have 16gb of ddr4 3200 ram installed. My internet is with VM and is 1gb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
John

Need help deciding on a NAS for my use |

I am a bit of a tech noob, but I enjoy watching your videos on YouTube.
I am looking to purchase an NAS for home use with some home business (photography) use as well. This is triggered by my decision to move away from Google Drive and Google Photos after their recent changes and the plethora of portable hard drives that I keep juggling.
Primary purposes are mostly personal:
1. Storing and backing up critically important documents, and working on them directly from within the house. This has to be fail-safe.
2. Simple document editor functions and advanced spreadsheet capability.
3. Share specific folders to other users within the house. Share specific folders/documents to external users for collaboration.
4. Storing photos and videos shot on mobile. Searching by person, and accessing from a Smart TV.
Secondary purposes:
1. Connect 6x Eufy indoor cameras and view realtime streams
2. Store videos and events recorded from camera for 7-10 days.
3. Small business: Store RAW files and share a portion of this to external users.
4. Do all above from mobile e.g. when remote.
5. Store Movies I own. Consolidate media subscriptions and stream content to a Smart TV.
I have 3 TB personal data, and I expect this to grow at 0.25 TB per year - this is my primary storage and backup need. I have 6 TB small business data, and I expect this to grow at 0.5 TB per year. I am very wary of sharing or exposing data on the internet.
Prioritising personal use, I am considering Synology DS920+ or DS923+ with two or three 8 TB hard drives to start. This would be fairy expensive coming in at $230 a pop not including the cost of the NAS - https://www.amazon.sg/Seagate-IronWolf-Internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B084ZV4DXB. I have been seeing reviews of the 923 and it looks like we'll see a mad rush for 920 soon. Honestly, I am conflicted, as I want something long-term and I am not a power media user.
What is your recommendation? Should I get VPN, Plex, Firewalls? And finally, what should I do with the multiple portable SSDs and Hard disks that I have?

looking for a media server with the option to expand down the road to maybe include a file server or VM's. Would prefer 4+ bays and leaning towards synology DS1520+ so that I can use drives of different sizes

Hey Nas Compares
I liked your video
currently I have a ds415+ with 8gb ram and 4 x 3tb WD RED hd With hybrid raid but
I have started to get video lagging and buffering especially after dsm 7
i want it replaced it and it can only be updated to 7.1
I mostly only use it for ds video and the client side is Apple TV and it is both local and internet (300/300Mbit)
I've tried using plex but it uses about 90% of the cpu on a movie compared to ds video it uses max 10% cpu
I also like the user interface better on ds video
my video is converted to mp4 in 1080p as it cannot run 4k
you disagree a little with each other on whether you should choose ds920+ or wait for ds923+
I think that DSM is a really good operating system
I would like to hear from you about what I should choose?
and which hd should I choose, it will probably be 4 x 4tb
I look forward to hearing from you
Sincerely
Claus
