  NAS system
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-31-2022, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
I'm a photographer with 30 years of experience, working in the digital media since 2004 and have 15+years of analog material which will be digitalize soon
I have a Mac Book Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)
MacBookPro11,3, Intel Core i7, 2.8 GHz Memory:16 GB
running version 10.13.6
and this will be my base machine for some time to go, since I'm using Photoshop CS6 on it and this is the only that will run that,
anyway I'm looking for a 5 bay nas system that has speed ( meaning 10 to 40 GB transfer rate ) this mac is using still the Thunderbolt (up to 40Gb/s)
USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s) .
At the moment im using Novus External USB-C Rugged Desktop Hard Drive, and im aware that this is not the solution , but the transfer rate is fast
I had 2 dying on me, ( i always have 3 back ups so i was safe )
I need to go to the next step and the 5 bay nas would be a perfect solution i been looking at Symbology DS1522+ and 10GbE upgrade card to get some kind of speed
I will be-working on reorganizing images adding meta text , so lots of date coming and going, I not sure if this will be fast (bottle neck)
I was thinking of using
QNA-T310G1S
OWC Thunderbolt 3 10G to ad some speed

by getting the Symbology DS1522+ with 10GbE upgrade card +5 drives at 14 tb memory and ssd it all come down to $ 4300.00 i have a budget of $5000
this investement should last for at least the next 5 years to come if not more
but Im worry if i should just wait
I know firewire / thunderbolt 4 should be coming out soon
so im kind of confused on what to do.
thanks

dominik

  Family Nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-31-2022, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
First let me tell you that I am quite new on this topic so if I give some useless information sorry in advance.
To give you some context about my tech skill, I am a cloud developer (python & aws), so I have some docker and linux knowledge.
I just want to create a NAS to fit my family needs (we are 3), the majority of files that we save on are personal, and they are documents/videos/photos. On top of that, sometimes I save a few amounts of movies when I go on holidays or travel but nothing that I need to have available on my cloud for a lot of time.
Each one of US have an external driver USB 3.0 with 2TB and for now it's enough (mine for example have less than 1TB used and I have that drive since 2010 with some Virtual Machines that I need to have time to delete)
Recently before a start reading about NAS I bought two 2TB computer HDD to work as a storage poll on my Desktop computer, but now I think that makes sense to create a solution that can centralize my family data and use it as a family private cloud.
Saying all of that, I am here asking an advice on each NAS should I start with. From some videos that I saw from Synology and Asustor they seem to be the best solution because they have user-friendly software, but I want and advice from someone that are inside of the topic. If it's possible I have a linux server running on that NAS it would be perfect but if that feature increase a lot the cost I can use a raspberry pi to that purpose. On my first house I have 200 Download and 100 upload service and on my second house I have 500 downloads and 200 upload. On the storage field I told 10TB should be enough but if you can give or thought on that too could be nice

Poor speed using Dual band Sim router
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-31-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi lads, wonder if you can spare a moment to help me out. I live on a boat and use a sim router for my internet connection. I have a TP Link MR600 and use an unlimited data sim from superdrug. I use a large external omnidirectional antenna (I cannot for the life of me remember exactly which one, although it certainly wasn't more than a couple hundred quid). I though I had done my homework and got everything setup correctly, yet the fastest speed we have ever seen is about 300kbs which is obviously terribly slow, and the connection cuts out constantly. We live in Lincoln which isn't known for it's incredibly fast internet, but when using 4g on our phones we easily get up to 100 mbs.

What am I missing?

Cheers
Ross

Purchasing Help - School Network Storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-31-2022, 05:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I teach kids coding and we are running into issues with our game dev. students. Unity is quite performance heavy and already takes 3-5minutes to load on our systems. Their projects are all saved locally which has caused problems and lead me to looking for network storage with minimal added time.

Not sure what is overkill or what is recommended, around 5 users max and their projects are typically 5-15gb in size. Redundancy would be nice, and lower budget would be nice
Thanks!

  ORICO Case & SSD Size
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-30-2022, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear all,

I saw your tutorial "ORICO USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 NVMe Case Review and Testing - ORICO-M234C3-U4" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaS8ZgdrMnM).

I have a couple of questions.

My idea is to build a 4TB “my” SSD external disk, using a Seagate FireCuda 530 with Heatsink within a ORICO-M208C3-U4 case.

I would like to use it as external drive for my Mac mini. This means, Thunderbolt is for me "better" than USB.

My first question is:
Is ORICO really the best (fastest) case? I also saw the OWC Envoy Express, Thunderbolt. But as far as I correctly read their specs, it seems slower that ORICO.

The second question is:
If I choose ORICO as a case, does the Seagate FireCuda 530 with Heatsink really fits in?

Thank you in advance for your hints / suggestions

Best regards
Val

Nas plex server used for deployment
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-30-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking for a quality plex server always online, for when i go on deployment for 6 months, i like synology due to the resilliancy from ransomware. I was looking towards DS920+ but interested in more info on the DS923+. Generally only stream 1080p currently possibly a 4k or 8k streaming in the future, mostly single streams to one device currently at most 3 streams at a time. Will the DS420 or DS418 be a better suited NAS? I want to be able to upgrade HDDs as i go so i was looking at SHR for a raid 5 configuration. Ill buy HHD over time. Can i use my current USB Portable HDD to fill the device if i disassemble them and plug them in?

Replacing a QNAP TS453Be - looking for advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-30-2022, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I'm amazed at your offer of free advice and hope it's genuine.
I've been using QNAP devices for years. I had a TS419 but had to replace it when a bay (not a drive) died. I used a TS421 for a few years and then upgraded to a TS453Be which I've had since May 2019. Now, a bay in that device has died. Given these two negative QNAP experiences, I'm looking at Synology units.

I have options:
- DS920+ brand new in Israel for $769
- DS1522+ delivered to Israel from Amazon US for $905
- DS-1819+ "barely used" via Facebook marketplace $792

My needs:
- File storage
- Lots of media streaming (including 4k video) from Apple TV and iPads (using Infuse on both)

If I'm right, all of these devices will meet my needs and all should perform at least as well as the QNAP TS453Be. But I wanted to double-check
