I have an old QNAP TS-251. I have two 4TB drives that I want to up in it and I want to use the full 8TB for file storage. This QNAP TS-251 has failed me many times over the years so I simply do not trust it as a reliable NAS. So I basically want to make it a networked DAS. Can I do this and if so how? I hate the fact that QNAP does not use a standard file system, but I don't want to trash this TS-251 and if it can be setup as a DAS it would save me a bunch of cash until I upgrade to a 8 bay NAS. So can anyone guide me through this?

From my research on a Mac/PC hybrid environment for currently one user, I pretty much have settled on a Qnap Nas, most likely the TVS-472XT and populate with -4- Seagate 22TB IronWolf Pro 7200. I had briefly considered a DAS but too limiting with my two machines and client access to media for review

I am purchasing specifically because of Thunderbolt 3, would you recommend any of the following

NVMEs or SSDs for faster access caching? - I plan to edit 4k footage directly, perhaps using proxies (Resolve) but want both options and these tend to be large files, so from one post it appears that SSDs would be better with smaller files?

I own a QNAP 4 bay NAS TS-431-P2 with 3 Seagate Ironwolf drives (IronWolf ST4000VN008) in a RAID5 configuration. Now I want to add the 4th drive. I have seen a Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN006 that is currently cheaper then the Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN008 drive. Should I stick to the type of drive that is already installed or can I mix the existing drives with the cheaper IronWolf ST4000VN006. As far as I know the differences between the two drives are only in cache size and RPM.

First, thank you for all the great content you’ve created, I watched a ton of your videos and learned a lot.
I am searching for the best backup strategy within budget.
Main goal is to preserve all data at any cost.
Some considerations:
My plan is to get a 4 bays NAS, maybe the DS423, the ARM one, yes ARM.
Currently offsite backups are off the table since my internet upload speed is very slow.
My current data to be backed up is about 300GB and growing fast, mostly photos and videos.
I am aware of the 3-2-1backup strategy, and I am thinking to populate the 4 bay NAS as follow:
• Fill out drive 1, 2 and 3 in a SHR pool with BTRFS and enable snapshot replication.
• Leave the 4th drive as a separate pool exclusively for backup.
• Add a USB drive for backup.
• Enable an old PC with Synology Drive sync one way to act as a third backup copy.
I would appreciate your expert toughs on this one, cheers.

Which NAS/DAS etc - Mainly for back up and storage of videos used for small online business. Currently using external hard drives up to 4 TB and are full , also using google drive.
Have had one external drive fail hence looking at a new system.
I currently use a MAC

Have have a stack of old hard drives, from old gaming computers and home server O tried to build once (died in a basement flood before it got off the ground). These are WD blacks, and Seagate barracudas. 4 of them for a total of 10tb. Other than letting them sit and be forgotten about, can I get a small 4 bay nas, from like terra master, run them in Jbod, and make it a plex server? I have nearly 1200 dvd/blu-rays. Those should get me started. Just not sure of the Nas will recognize them or not being desktop drives.

Want to stream my CD collection to Sonos, nas seems the best solution. Want a cheap and easy solution that will store a few hindered cd's. May also backup our computers and store our photos, but streaming Sonos is the main need.

I bought a QNAP TS-h886 when it got released and last month I bought 64 gig Kingston Server Premier kit (KSM26ED8/32MF).
Now my problem is when I added any of them to channel2(black socket). The NAS wouldn't boot, the display just shows " SYSTEM BOOTING".
But when I add the original 16gig and 64 gig Kingston in channel1(blue socket) and leave channel2 free, it runs with both.

I have talked to QNAP, but they can only help if I buy new original memory.

What aim doing wrong or is it a motherboard problem?

Any ideas?

I wish to create my own NAS and Server to store Photos, Files and act as a Media server.

For photos, I am looking for an alternative to Google photos where meta data is kept and used (e.g. plex does not use meta data and it requires me to manually tag each photo and do this going forward).

For Files, I would like a central location where all my PCs or laptops can access the files. Preferably I will also be able to access the files from my phone though an app. If possible, I will also be able to access from my work PC where no software or app needs installed (if this is not possible this is not a problem). I would also like to store my gaming files/ saves (e.g. Steam) to the server so fast read/ write times would be preferred.

Media Server (and a way to stream these to phones, TVs, etc within home and out with)

For all of the above, I would like the ability to access the server/ NAS within the home when connected to the network and remotely, either on a PC or through my phone.
