move from drobo 5d to qnap Nas TS 464 or Ts 664
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-21-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello , first off thank you for the very informative videos. I have 2 drobo 5D units with qty 5 cpacity 6TB drives in each unit. i currently have 14.7 TB of data , mostly movies for Plex server that i am running off of a mac mini that has the 2 drobos attached. i don't know which way to go. I am so confused. I want to re use the drives if possible but was thinking of buying 14TB drives if need be so i can use the NAS as a cloud service for my entire family giving them the opportunity to store back ups and pictures and such off theiur iphones instead of relying on icloud. what is the best recommnedation?

  Asustor & Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-21-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm a long time Synology user (10+ years), and really favor the simplicity and no-nonsense nature of DSM. However, since one of my main use cases is as a Plex Media Server and I want the ability to transcode video to multiple devices, I really want a NAS with a graphics processor. With the new Synology *23+ devices, graphics are no longer an option (as you have covered in videos). Asustor has really intrigued me - especially with their LockerStor models with the new Celeron procs. I worry that their software isn't as up to snuff compared to Synology. You've pointed out that Asustor relies on more 3rd party apps as opposed to 1st party like Synology. In your humble opinion, is Asustor mature enough for my use case? Again, a home NAS for Plex, photo storage, and a couple of shared drives for family use is what I'm looking for. Oh - and a Download Station like Synology has. Thanks!

  Media server
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-21-2023, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to build a media server for 4k UHD backups. Atleast minimum 2 TV’s.
Ideal 1st choice would be Kaleidescape system (way too expensive)
2nd choice zappiti 4k nas ( still cost around £5k)
But Zappiti has brilliant ui including putting a blue ray in the drive and it automatically rips.
So learning from your videos I prefer a solution 4/6 bay with transcoding hardware. Not sure how important 10gb ports are?
Is it safe to buy Terramaster T6-423 (or f4-423)with ASU’s bw-16D1HT blu ray rip drive and Seagate iron wolf pro 16tb drives x4 to use with Plex
I want the blue ray rip to be easy and seamless (like Zappiti) if possible.
Currently have virgin 1gb internet at home.
Many thanks for your thoughts
Gulam

  QNAP TS-44
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I'm looking for a NAS to back up my Cloud storage, local storage, and mobile data.
Plex & Virtualization would be a plus. I'm 99% decided on TS-464.

The missing component I've found is a way to back up:

iOS or Google contacts. (Looks like QNAP discontinued support of their contacts app)
Mobile Notes

What is your recommendation?

  4k PLEX Remote NAS Suggestion
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'd like to remotely (over the internet) access 4k movies/shows with Dolby Atmos audio data on my PLEX server. I will have 2 simultaneous streams at most (usually just 1). The PLEX client will be an NVIDIA Shield Pro so I should probably be fine with most NAS devices, but I'd like to get something robust enough to handle transcoding as though I didnt have the Shield Pro.

Thank you kindly!

  NAS Buying Advice Request
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I’m a first time NAS buyer and have been watching your videos and looking through your website articles a lot over the last year. It’s a complicated purchase so I have some questions, if you would be so kind as to answer.

Budget: Less than £2,000 (preferably around £1,500 mark
Use case: Home
Reason: Get central storage for my house and my parents’ house’s data & backup photos/videos/documents

- I decided to go with Synology from your many videos and the DSM software seems best/easiest to use.

- I was going for the DS923+ but believe that the DS1522+ is more future proofed.

- I would like to start with 2 drives (and have one as a backup). And buy more drives in the future.

Questions:

- What RAID configuration should I go for to have 1 drive as a backup in the beginning, and have flexibility to add more drives in the future?

- Which storage drives are the best? (WD Red Plus/Seagate etc.)

- Does my thinking make sense/what would you do?

- Is there anything else I need to kee

  Ethernet/Wifi
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, hope you can help?

I recently converted my garage to a home office and ensured that a armoured cable was laid from my router (in the main house) to a ethernet plate in the wall. I then use a ethernet cable to connect to a Thinkpad dock so I can get wired internet to my laptop.

Unfortunately the wifi reception in the office is not great as it is far from the house meaning that I can't use my Sonos device.

Is there a way of utilising the ethernet port on the wall so it can be used for both ethernet (for the laptop) and wifi (for Sonos).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Sam

  1512+ memory upgrade allowance

I know the age of my NSA limits me but it’s been a workhorse for 10 years and I’m hoping a memory upgrade can extend it as demand increases. Thank you!

  NAS for docker Homebridge
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-20-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I hope this finds you and your team well.

A colleague just started at Synology and has 40% off for their equipment and shared with me I should get a dual bay.

Originally I’ve considered a single bay NAS just for docker use so I can run Homebridge for my cameras in my home.

Can I get away with the cheapest DSM7 capable NAS setup or will rocker require more resources?

I think I’d be more comfortable with the DS220 as I would like to consolidate all my photography and family media and really like the second Ethernet port.

Anyway, gonna spend the next few days watching your channel. Thank you for your great work!

Best,
Amir
