  Recommendation
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-20-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Smile I try to keep it short: I´m new to NAS and my needs are: Media server/streaming, Data Backup, my own cloud as well as email server. I currently have 1TB of data all together accumulated. Its going to be purely private use (no business stuff).

My priorities are noise (even though when im sleeping/not using the NAS this shouldnt be an issue right?) , reliability and energy consumption. Data Backup better then RAID1? Partitioning the HDD´S? Streaming of Movies/Videos.

So far I have narrowed it down ( I´ve watched loads of your vids) to

Synology 220+ and the seagate Iron Wolf (pro?)

Which HDD is good for my needs and how many TB

Thank you so much for your help.

Stephan

Best NAS for document storage and photography
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-20-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have the QNAP TS-431P. I use Lightroom and have the original images stored on the NAS with the Lightroom catalogue stored on the Macbook Pro. I have an issue with lightroom losing the NAS and not being able to find the originals. I then have to re-establish the path in Lightroom to continue editing. This happens frequently.

QNAP has told me that my old NAS might not be up to the task, but they were not very clear on what they would recommend using.

My plan is to keep documents and photos on the new NAS and use the current NAS for backing up the new NAS and Time Machine.

What NAS would you recommend?

Network switch 10 GB for Synology DS3622xs+
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-20-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have just ordered new DS3622xs+. I will use my 10GB on the NAS and therefore the switch must be able to use 10GB. I have Netgear orbit as mesh and I have a Mac Studio which I want to use together with the NAS.
I saw your review of the "QNAP QSW-M408-4C 10Gbe Managed Switch" and wonder if that's a good choice despite my nas is not QNAP. Looking forward for advice.

  Can't decide between two NASes
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-20-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,
first of all, thank you for the opportuniy to ask questions. I have studied alot of your Youtube videos, but still I have a question:
I want a NAS as silent as possible, will be loaded with SSDs only. I need it for data strorage (Mac Backups), storing my photos and a couple of videos. Two models are in my mind, DS620Slim and DS920+. The later offers 10GBe opportunity, but my infrastructure (AppleTV etc) isn't capable of 10GBe right now and maybe won't in near future. I would have bought the DS620Slim right away if it was 4-core. What would you suggest ? Is the DS920+ that much louder ?

Thank you very VERY much !!
Regards,
Attila

  WD My Cloud Pro Series
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, if I had the opportunity to purchase a WD My Cloud Pro Series 4-bay model 32tb brand new for around 1000 AUD, would you say it is a good deal? I just need to access and store a bunch of files and use PLEX media server sometimes.

Just wanted to thank you for your site and advice. It's clear, detailed and comprehensive.

It's been especially useful in helping me move from my DS212j to a shiny new DS920+ with 4xSynology HAT5300-4T. A lot to learn about security and global accessibility, which I'm still unsure about.

You may be interested to know that on initial set-up, I was unable to follow the DSM 'wizard' setup because my HDD firmware was out of date. I had to manually update the firmware from 1401 to 1403 first. Didn't expect that.

No need to reply. Keep up the good work.

  UPGRADING WDPR4100
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I enjoy watching your channel and love the way you explain things. I have a WDPR4100 and now that WD no longer supports this device I am looking to upgrade it. I have 4 x 10TB =40TB WD RED Hard Drives connected to it. I am also looking for another 4 bay. I use it for work and for PLEX. I have watched your videos and was looking into the Qnap-TS464. Is this unit quiet? Any advice would be very helpful and appreciated. Side question- How do you prevent Nas devices from getting dusty? I heard if you put a stocking over the fan this helps. Thoughts?

Best,

Jason

  First NAS recommendations
Posted by: araenth - 01-19-2023, 05:12 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hey!

I'm looking for recommendations about NAS & HDDs for it.

NAS:
- For home use
- 4-5 bay NAS
- Mostly used as a backup of personal photos, videos, and documents
- It would be great if I could use it to edit some 4k videos
- I might also want to set up a few VMs or a Dockers
- It would be a plus if I would be able to play 4k footage from NAS on my TV

HDDs:
- Preferably +10TB each
- The most important factor is the noise level. Right now I would have to put the NAS in the living room close to the TV

Do you also have any recommendations for RAM / SSDs

I was thinking about DS923+ and WD Red Plus 12TB, but I've read that Seagate Ironwolf (12TB too) are quieter so I'm leaning more toward them right now.
Would this setup be okay for my requirements and does it even make sense to put it in the living room, or it would be too loud anyway?

I don't have an exact budget, I just want to buy whatever is best for this case.

Thanks! Smile

  QNAP TVS-H674
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi I am in the process of buying a TVS-H674-i3. I have 6 x 16TB Exos SATA Drives and two 1TB WD Red NVME SSD. I will be using the NAS for Pleax and home CCTV. My questions are as follows.

1. I intend to create a RAID 1 for the 2 x NVME SSDs and use this fior the OS and apps, however, can I split this RAID into two pools and use one pool for caching.
2. As my CCTV writes constantly will it be better to set up the following for the 6 SATA drives. $ discs in RAID 5 for Plex and two discs in RAID1 for the CCTV

Photography - Processing RAW NEF files
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-19-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I produce about 1 TB per year in NEF files (raw photos off Nikon camera) around 38 MB per file, that need to be processed in software on an iMac. With the internal HDD filling up quickly, I want to move the main saving location to an external HDD. I have a Verbatim (Model #47512) "shoe" that can house a SATA HDD, connected to the iMac over USB cable. What HDD would you recommend? Speed of writing to the drive is not a major need: Far more importantly, I need to be able to process these photos in software (I use Capture One) while they are sitting on that HDD connected over USB, and get no "drag" as much as possible. Thanks a lot!
