Synology compatibility list includes no 3rd party drives, HDD or SSD for my newly purchased DS223. I recall your review suggesting that this would not be the case. \\can you recommend any suitable drives? Especially 2tb SSD.
Thanks

  4kn HDD SHR-1 conversion to SHR-2
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-04-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Love your sight - I became aware of it in the UK when I was there a few years ago and it is the reason I went for a Synoloyg NAS 920+. I started with 2 WD Red Pro 6TB drives and then went to a 3rd using SHR-1. I finally went for a 4th but cannot get the 6TB so went for the 8TB. Ultimately I wanted to switch to SHR-2 because I also use it for my photos in addition to Time Machine backup. (The NAS is additionally backed up to a fire-proofed HD via HuperBackup via USB because I am anal about my pictures. The dilemma is the warning about not having a 4kn HDD to use the SHR-2 conversion. I have seen things about the WD "Hugo" program to convert the drives but I have a MAC. So, is this conversion possible or do I now have a 4 drive system with only a one drive back-up?

Thanks in advance.

  NAS Drives and additional storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-03-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

HI, I have a DS920+, and with black friday coming up, I want to get drives for it so that I can use it as a personal storage drive (like dropbox) and also as a Plex server.
I was thinking that I am best to have 4 drives that are at lest 8tb.
There are also two additional storage/memory drives on the bottom of the NAS.

My questions are:
1. What drives do you recommend? (I have seen WD Red, red plus, red pro, and seagate ironwolf, iron wolf pro, and ironwolf pro nas).
2. What amount of storage should I have for the Plex server use? Is 32 TB enough, or should it be higher?
3. It is necessary for me to get SSDs for the NAS (slots on the bottom), what is the pro/con for them?
4. Is there any info or video on how to run/maintain a plex server.....I am pretty new to this.

thanks in advance for your help!

Large Single Volume vs multi volume
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-03-2023, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

Getting close to running out of capacity on my Asustor NAS, I decided to upgrade my 3× Ironwolf 10TB to 3× WD Red 22TB drives. I have swapped them all out and synchronised and now am at the stage of "Expand Capacity".

My question is, what is best; multiple volumes or one large single volume?

Current volume 18TB, 16TB used. I am aware that volume size can't be reduced once expanded. I am also not sure what happens when I click esxpand capacity, whether i get the option to chose volume size, or it is grabs everything remaining.

Advice would be appreciated.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Imporance of hardware vs software for photo/video viewing on mobile phone
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-02-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Robbie,
I've watched many of your videos and I really learned a lot about my NAS purchase decision.
However, I'm still doubting between DS224+ or TS262 (or TS462, which is only 30 euros more expensive here). I also watched your comparison video.

My wishes: NAS on local LAN, it should provide a smooth and fast experience particularly for viewing photos in large (1000+ photos) folders, and playing 4k videos.
I currently own a TS233 which has issues: very slow thumbnail generation, very slow photo/video viewing, and some software issues which seem to be solved with app updates now.

Now, should a big hardware upgrade (TS262 > TS233) solve these problems? Or would a software-'upgrade' help, to DS224+ with only slightly better hardware than TS233?
I noticed both Synology and QNAP mobile apps have very poor ratings, but both regularly updated, and your comparisons on mobile apps suggest both provide smooth experience.

Any advice would be highly appreciated!
Arjan

  Drobo 5D3
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-02-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, we have had a 5D3 for a few years now but realise we have to change. We currently use our Drobo for archive storage of completed work - this is then backed up to Backblaze online storage.

In replacing the Drobo I am looking for something that is "Direct" attached - not NAS. Mainly for simplicity and the fact that Backblaze does not support NAS backup which would mean I'd then need another enclosure which I'd rather not have.

I realise you are a NAS website but just wondered if you had any recommendations regarding DAS?

We currently have 3x6TB and 2x3TB in the Drobo and they are about 80% full due to the protection loss.

I'm aware of the QNAP TR004, but is there anything you can use with mismatched drives?

Also, is there anything where, like Drobo, you can remove one drive and put a bigger one in to expand storage, without having to replace all drives at the same time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's a rabbit hole and its doing my head in!

Cheers, Darryl
