correct NAS for SD to UHD for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-18-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to weed through the noise and find the right solution for Plex Server which will contain a full spectrum of resolutions from SD to UHD HDR10+. I also have to mention I do have a rack system and am looking at those option as well to keep the hardware un-clutered.

  Synology Options
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-18-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have decided on a Synology DS1621+ adding the additional 10GbE expansion card and SSD Cache. There is a choice of cards, either 10GbE SFP+ or 10GbE RJ45. This device will serve 2 - 4 Apple iMac's in a design studio. Can you suggest which one would be best in terms of speed and low latency??

I also am considering using SSD's Vs HDD's - would you do this for the fastest perfomance???

Thanks

After watching your fine video on the TS 464 I also heard of your experiment on upgrading the memory above the mfg max memory. Can I go with 2 16 gb memory sticks?
And thank you very much.

  New NAS - SSD-only or HDD + TS464 vs as5404T
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-18-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I want to get rid of my home server and just buy a NAS (cheaper, if I consider the time i spend on hardware and software) and I am wondering if I could get advice on 2 things:
1. is it true that HDDs will keep data for longer? I am planning to get both HDDs and or SSDs based on MTBF and TBW, not necessarily performance. HDDs are still cheaper per MB but eventually I wonder if one should drop HDDs and just stick to SSDs.
2. Unless I should move to all-SSDs now and forget HDDs completely, I am looking at QNAP TS-464 and AS5404t. I could add a 4-NVME PCIe board to the QNAP, but that would make it much more expensive. I want something small and silent. This is not for media or video editing, it is slow archive. I can have my way around software - most important is a reliable system. Your advice will help me make the right decision.  Thanks.

Unable to maximize transfer speed on Synology DS-923+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-18-2023, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello!

Just put together the following setup:

NAS:

- Synology DS-923+, with 32GB RAM and 4x WD Red Plus 10TB each in RAID 0

- Synology 10Gbps ethernet adapter

Switch:

- TRENDnet 10Gbps Switch

Desktop:

- TRENDnet 10Gbps ethernet card, using Marvell's AQtion chipset

- Brand new CAT6A cabling connecting everything

- Jumbo Frames enabled at 9000 at both Synology and Desktop (Switch is unmanaged)

The WD Red Plus are rated as capable of sustaining 215MB/s. Therefore, 4 in RAID 0 should be able to go 860MB/s, right?

But when I transfer a very large 128GB file from the desktop (NVMe SSD, rated 3000MB/s+) to this RAID 0 volume, I'm only getting 400MB/s, or about only half of what should be expected.

The ethernet ports on both the NAS, Switch and Desktop are all lighting green. They only light green when the connection is at 10Gbps. 5Gbps and below will cause them to light orange.

Any ideas what could be hindering the performance?

Thank you very much !!!

  NAS or PC for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-17-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, so sorry to bother you. I am currently using an iMac with an external hd (8tb) as my plex media server. I have about 1500 dvds I would like to add to this server. I am unable to decide whether a NAS with a few large hd drives would be better than a pc as a plex media server. We don’t need to stream outside of our home, but it would be great to be able to stream via our home network across all rooms. I am an avid viewer of your YouTube channel and fairly technically minded, but would value your advice on which way to go.

Many thanks. Stuart

  Terramaster F4-423
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-17-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently use 2 x 500gb Nvme m.2 gen 3.4 for caching on my Terramaster F4-423 but I am looking o add them to my Triad storage pool instead. When I enquired through on line chat with Terramaster they replied when I asked about how much storage would they add to my pool they said 500gb. Which I get completely however I thought that when used as storage their capacity is multiplied.
Can you please advise.

  QNAP Automation
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-17-2023, 03:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Plex crashes frequently on QNAP TS-464. Have to go login stop and restart Plex and everything is back to normal. Being new to QNAP and NAS’s I am looking for a step-by-step way to schedule automatic stop and restarts of my Plex QNAP app. I figure that has to be a task scheduler on the NAS, or a service that will restart apps if the fail. Need help at a 5 year level. Thanks

  Ugrade DS1512+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-16-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My Ds1512+ is almost full, 5x3TB WD Reds using SHR. Time to update.
Looked into expanding my DS1512+ but the cost is not really worth the reward.
My NAS consist of movies, mp3, photos and private personal data storage.
I want to have the capability to add 20-25 high quality outside 4K cameras.
Currently using Swann analog system of 4 cameras, which I think is junk.
I live on an acre of property with 2 detached large garages. House and 1 garage is currently wired with CAT 5E.
The other garage , 125ft away from house, will be getting Cat6a underground wired, soon. Is there a better choice?

Want to use 2.5GBe or 10GBe network. Only have a few devices capable of 2.5GBe, but I want to update for future expansion and capabilities.
I've been reading up on the DS923+, Ds1521+, DS1621+, DS1821+
Was thinking that creating 3 pools of data, movies and cameras , not sure if that is smart though.
Want to user SHR1.
How many disk will I need and what size should I get?
Only 1 user.
TIA

Posted by: Enquiries - 08-16-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
My question is if this drive will work with my old Synology 420+.
16TB IronWolf Pro st16000ntz01
The site says ST16000NE000 is compatible, but fails to mention st16000ntz01.
Love your YouTube channel.

Thank you
