Just found this awesome request form and wanted to reach out as I am on the search for a DIY NAS.

I want to give Unraid a try and would look for something like this:
- Backup (was thinking about a parity of 18TB and smaller Drives as array)
- Running a plex media server which has at max 2 connections (probably only one at a time for now). Maybe there is transcoding needed here and there, but not regularly
- Having various docker containers (pihole, vpn, paperless ngx, etc.)
- Having a gameserver running , which can be paused when not used
- VMs are not interesteing to me currently, but may would try to play around with them
- Power consumption should be low
- My Network has Cat 7A cables

My biggest trouble is the case and the motherboard/CPU, as I dont have any idea about the performance of them in a server. How much can a modern CPU (also a Celereon CPU like the N5105) take in terms of docker containers/media streaming?

hi I'm buying a new terramaster f4 424 and 2x8tb drives I have an old terramaster f2 421 with 2x4tb drives non raided, can I just swap the drives to new nas or is there a migration tool? I would like the original data transferred to the new drives if possible as the old drives are working but 4 or 5 years old

I am looking for a NAS for my small office. Requiremet are as under,

- to be used only as file server (storing files such as word, excel, pdf, autocad files etc), there will be no streaming (media) what so ever.
- Capacity : We dont actually require a lot of capacity. Even 2 TB will be more then enough
- Total users will be around 3 to 5 initially. and in Next 2 years can increase up to 12 users.
- Remote access is very important - We need to be able to access files from Out Of Office locations.

- How much RAM do you recommend? I am seeing devices with 512mb to 4 GB. I understand not much ram is required as it is only a file server, but how much ram would be enough considering future proofing.
- 2 Bay or 4bay?
- HDD or SDD ? If HDD how much RPM ?
- Any particular recommended brand ? or Any brand to stay away from?

I have a question, if I put in the Synology DS923+ with a 10GBe LAN connection: Variant A: 4x HDD + m.2 NVME SSD as cache or Variant B: 4x SATA SSD

Would be a big difference, or practically none between them in term of speed down/up, bottleneck? There is no need for specific numbers, only roughly.

I know and It is clear to me that the price-to-storage ratio is absolutely clear for hdd, as well as noise, but I am more interested in comparing download/upload or bottleneck performance of both variants.

I bought a new QNAP TS-464 with four Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB disks. I immediately got a ""Host: 3.5" SATA HDD 2": Read  I/O error, "ABORTED COMMAND "" warning. I installed the DA Drive Analyzer and applied the license on that one disk. It came back with a "moderate risk" warning for the disk. I returned the drive to Amazon (USA), and replaced it with another Seagate IronWolf Pro 16 TB. Now I am getting the same warning message, with an even worse message for the new disk (Critical - Drive at Risk).

Is it worth trying to replace the disk again (maybe another brand?) or should I start thinking there is something wrong with the QNAP itself? There are no warnings on the other 3 disks, just the one on bay 2.

I would appreciate some advice on hardware for the following build requirements:
TrueNAS Scale (to support NAS plus NextCloud, Jellyfin, Homeassistant plus various Docker containers.
Self hosted ghost in Docker
Mirrored disks 2X8TB
SSD for the OS
Room for expansion

Integrated NAS solutions from Synology and Qnap are too expensive. I am thinking if a two server set up would be better: One cheap NAS to serve the files and a more powerful PC to serve the apps (using CasaOS), using NFS or iSCSI between them. If OK, what would the cheapest fileserver capable of 10Gb/s Ethernet be? And is this a feasible setup?

I really like your $750 to $1000 build, but I would prefer to use a bigger case (such as the Silver Stone CS382). Although I plan to only use 6 bays at first, I would like to have the additional bays for future expansion. If you were to use the CS382, what changes and/or upgrades would you make to the N3 build you made? In particular, would you consider a stronger CPU (i7 or i9) rather than the i5 you included in your build? The prices for the higher level CPUs, especially for the i7, don't appear to be much different. Because I'm an American stationed overseas, Ali Express is not an option for me. I do have access to Amazon and local computer stores for purchases.

What advice can you provide on the hardware to go with a CS382 case?

If I wanted to stream multiple high quality 8K videos with transcoding would it be wise to install a GPU to prevent over taxing the CPU and generating too much heat?
