Hello,
I just bought a F4-212.
I want to direct mount a data drive to my F4-212. That's why I bought the NAS.
I read I have to update to TOS 6 but F4-212 is not supported.
Can I (now or in future) and how do I direct mount a data drive on my F4-212?
Kind regards,
Marco

Replacement for a Synology DS118 |

I have about 300 gb of photos, 130 gb of videofiles and 100 gb of other files. I want all these files stored at a systeem that is accessible form MacBook, iPad, Android-smartphones and the internet. And I want it to be fast! The current DS118 works, but the loading time is too long. The network and internet connection aren't slowing me down, it's the memory and harddisk.
The other must haves are:
- An easy and reliable app for photo sync between the phones and the new NAS.
- Suitable for Apple Time Machine
I'm thinking of a small NAS with SSD (1 or 2 TB) for the files that I want to access fast. And a HDD (4 TB) for the Time Machine and temporally file storage.
Is an Asustor AS5402T the best option or are there better options?

Hello everyone,
I’m new to the world of NAS and recently purchased a Ugreen NAS, which I plan to equip with 2×8TB HDDs and 2×500GB M.2 SSDs. My idea is to install the operating system and apps (e.g., Plex, Docker) on the SSDs while using the HDDs primarily for data storage.
The goal is to ensure that during app usage or system-related tasks, the HDDs remain in standby mode, reducing wear and tear as well as energy consumption.
Additionally, I’m considering setting up the SSDs as a cache for frequently accessed data faster.
1. Does this approach make sense for a NAS setup?
2. Are there any potential pitfalls or limitations I should be aware of?
3. Would using the SSDs as a cache while hosting the OS and apps on them negatively impact their performance or lifespan?
4. Is there an alternative configuration that you’d recommend for balancing performance, reliability, and efficiency?
Thank you for your suggestions!

I am Planning to use a QNAP TS-464 and QuMagie to archive our picture collection. I have watched a lot of test videos on Youtube, but I can not find any info on sharing the whole collection. Want to share with my family over internet, but need to restrict access and changes. What is possible, and do other tools offer more possibilities?
Maybe this is a subject that could be covered in one of your very good and instructive videos?

Hello Guys,
What would be the best NAS for 4K with atoms?
Also would it be possible to play back using Apple TV 4K from the NAS instead of directly from the NAS?

My current setup is a iMac 27" 5k from 2014 (yes). It has 512 Gb internal that i use only for Macos and app's. Data is on a raid 1 (2*3Tb) WD MyBook Duo. I've got about 2.5 Tb in use. Further additional 6Tb drive for Timemachine. I use it for all the normal computer work and photo editing and occasional video editing. The WD raid is slow but workable. It is time to move to a Mac mini M4 with 512 Gb internal storage and just like now I want all the data on an external drive. I'm torn between options: 1) OWC Express 1M2 with 4Tb ssd, 2) LaCie 1big Dock 4Tb, 3) LaCie 2Big Raid 8Tb (for speed?). I can use the current WD raid for Timemachine backups. Slow, but it's only backup. I don't think a NAS is necessary and I have bad experiences in the past with connectivity and slow speeds. I don't want to be too nerdy focussed on speed which is an all to obviously trap. What would you recommend and if so which 4Tb ssd to use in the OWC.
Thank you so much.
Kind regards Peter

I now have 2 lacie d2 10tb drives connected to a Nvidia shield mainly filled with movies and series for a semi pro cinema room. Using mainly Kodi or Infuse to play the movies/series. Need more storage and backup of the drives (see raid 5 or 6 solution)
Would like a solution so in other rooms movies and series can also be accessed&played + wirelessly uploaded. Have a Unify deam machine pro and switch pro, wireless all idm as well and all put in a rack. Ideally a rack solution or tower and doubting between 6 or 4 bay NAS from Qnap or Unify (tower or rack). Mainly for video playback and camera recording (house security) and access from all rooms. Every room has an apply tv or shield for the media.
Thanks for the advice .

NAS and PLEX 4K Direct Play |

Hello, I personally collect movies and series for hobby purposes. I have an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 Android TV device and a Synology DS-920+ NAS device. I love Plex and I use Plex Media Server installed with Docker on the NAS. I also use the Plex application via Nvidia Shield TV. I watch movies and series files by using the NAS as a storage area. Sometimes I use very large video files such as 4K HDR Plus 10 bits, but I need to play them by transcoding. My question to you is: Do you have any recommendations for a NAS device that I can use to play 4K video files directly using PLEX without transcoding or file conversion? In other words, I want to play a 4K video file directly in 4K without converting it to 1080p. Is there any NAS device brand and model that you can recommend for this? Thank you for your support..

NAS advice needed |

Hi,
I need advice.
My intended NAS setup:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 8600G 4.3 GHz 6-Core, integrated Radeon 760M, cooler incl.
Mobo: ASRock A620I LIGHTNING WIFI Mini ITX AM5
Mem: Kingston ValueRAM 32 GB (1 x 32 GB) DDR5
Case: Jonsbo N4
Intended use: home file & media store, occasionally managing some VMs, containers, etc.
I tried to choose quite recent parts for a quite future proof device. RAM is DDR5 but I'm still thinking about choosing DDR4.
Backup is additionally on ext. HDD.
Case choice is Jonsbo N4 as it is smaller than N3 and looks better. CPU is a box processor and shipped with cooler. Do I need additional cooling or is it enough for my home use? The number of disk spaces, 6 is enough for my current and future needs as I'm planning to add 4 HDDs into the system now (2 maybe later).
Am I missing any parts in this setup, e.g. additional cooler, expansion cards anything? Should I go with Jonsbo N3?
Let me know if this setup is exaggerated or any change suggestions.
Thanks
