Premiere pro editing in team? |

6 guys need to edit video as a team using premiere pro with pretty big files (some clips are 6 or more hours long). We have DS 3613 xs with two extensions all filled with 8TB drives and connected with 10G. It is too slow likely due to media cache files stored on nas. CPU is often saturated. Question - would change to DS3617Xs and installation of some (4?) SSDs make big difference in access to cache files ? Or better we switch to FS3600 which we also may have with SAS drives, but no SSDs. In other worlds low cost update or high end rental? Or other solution?

NAS mostly for video editing and network help? |

Hi Rob
Thank you for offering to help people with queries. It’s a very welcome service you are offering. I want to purchase a NAS but would welcome some guidance.
My partner enjoys writing scripts and making films. We have recently got a BlackMagic 4K Cinema Camera so expect the data storage needs to increase along with the size of the video editing projects. I do a bit of editing as well mostly of old home videos and both of us have a considerable number of digital photographs.
I was going to build my own NAS from an older video editing PC and got as far as buying two WD 12TB NAS HDDs, a Fractal case and a Noctua fan for the old motherboard but after reading several articles about power consumption and noise, I’ve decided a purpose-built NAS device would be better.
I was thinking of getting a Synology 1520+ DiskStation, using the two HDDs already mentioned and buying three more. Is there any advantage of getting a 5 bay over a 4 bay, other than its just got more storage capability?
Virgin Media is our internet provider. We have their Hub 3 router which is pretty good and from that we have used 3 of the 4 ethernet sockets to run Cat6 cable to my desktop PC, my partner’s desktop PC and to a 4-way 1Gb switch located behind the TV for the Virgin V6 cable box (for Netflix, YouTube etc) and a Denon Receiver (for Internet Radio etc).
The only things we have wireless are our mobile phones and a printer. I would like to get the printer on a wired network if possible as it does have an ethernet socket.
The NAS would almost certainly be located in the same room as the Broadband router. Do you think our home network would be better if I purchased a separate switch rather than using the router to connect everything together? Or would it be better to use the NAS as the network ‘centre’? Or doesn’t it make any difference? And is there any advantage getting a 10GbE switch? None of our current devices have 10GbE networking capability but I wouldn’t mind getting 10GbE network cards for the two PCs if that gave an advantage.
I hope this makes sense. Thanks very much for your help.
Kind regards
Dean

How to add Nest outdoor camera to Surveillance Station? |

Hi,
I own a NAS Synology DS118 and would like to use Synology Surveillance Station for my outdoor camera’s. Recently I bought Nest Outdoor camera’s and they are now connected to my router through Netgear ORBI RBK13 (WiFi extender system). The camera’s are outside the WiFi range of my router.
When adding the IP camera from Synology Surveillance Station, these camera’s are not recognised (neither via ONVIF). I believe I need to allocate them to a certain port, but from the Nest app, I only can see the IP address (no port assigned to it). Unfortunately I can not configure the port from the Nest app. Can you please advise me how to proceed? Thank you in advance for your help.
Regards,
Hauw.

NAS? |

I want a NAS, or something, that is hard wired to my computer and that I can easily upload/download files to without it being through my internet. Basically a server, where the home base of files are accessible on a computer at the ready and don't need to be downloaded to the computer to use them. And then all the normal nas features, but that's the main one. Is there a NAS that does this. I really do not want to have to learn how to use a server and do this, as I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to networking.
Thanks

Hi Robbie
I need some advice , by the way love your videos very interesting
I have the Synology 918+ 8gb Ram a few questions I would like your opinion on if I could, I basically use it just for running Plex , (lots of 4K content) , would I see much benefit from increasing the Ram to 16gb also wondering the same thing about the ssd cache is it worth it or not
The Main thing I need advice on is I need to increase my storage , while getting bigger drives is one option it is expensive here in Australia and then I have the spare hard drives of witch I already have 2 from my last upgrade
I was considering the expansion unit , but their is so many confusing options on getting it and then the people that say yes get it are divided and say never create 1 volume using the expansion unit if , it fails you lose you whole volume
Others say you should create a second volume
I’m looking for somebody’s option that I trust if there is another solution let me know perhaps utilising the USB slots
Also I read that you ship overseas and the cost might be surprising if you think the expansion unit is the best option please give me your best price shipped to Sydney Australia
Thanks

Kingston Memory and DS920+? |

I bought a DS920+ and after watching a few videos, yours included, I bought the Kingston KCP426SS8/16 16 Gb SODIMM RAM that you listed on your site. I tried three times - It will not boot up with it installed. Power light stays blinking, and I do not get a POST beep or any other reaction. Is it possible that this has been changed in the BIOS that it won't accept any other memory but theirs? I'm going to be severely disappointed if that's the case. Hoping you've got some insight, or maybe something I missed. Thanks for the help!

Hello,
I'm from Indonesia and I'd like your help with me choosing a NAS.
Currently I already have WD MyCloud (not the Home edition) with 3TiB capacity. It is so old that I already fill 99% of it's available capacity. So now, I decided to buy NAS that can be, how to say it, upgraded, it's capacity. I choose WD Red to be filled with my future NAS.
I use my current NAS for mixed purpose, like streaming video, saving Office files, or backup. But mostly I use it to streaming video.
I actually already satisfied with my WD MyCloud. Whether it's user features or performance. Except for it's built-in capacity of course.
But if I can get a better transfer speed, it is better. Assumes I'm using capable switch or router to do it's maximum transfer speed.
For Plex, even if I could give it a try, but I don't mind not having it. I once try it with my WD My Passport Wireless Pro and it's unbelievably running at a snail's pace.
It would be very helpful if you can advise me NAS products from each manufacturer. I try to avoid Synlogy, QNAP, Thecus, and TerraMaster. But if it's prove to be better, then please.
Thank you.

I am interested in a feature comparison between the Synology Rs819 and the Rs820+ Is there really a difference between them besides price. I want to purchase one or the other but not sure which is actually better for in feature, benefits, and future proofing. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
