I intend ordering a QNAP TS-453D unit to replace an old QNAP TS212 model.
This for home use providing backup for one Imac,
two Windows pcs & a Linux desktop.
Also to act as storage & server for FLAC music files to a streamer. Also for photo storage with ability to display on a smart tv.
The choice of HDDs is wide & varied particularly around CMR & SMR types for NAS use.
If I go for 4 off 3TB discs, which models would you recommend & why?

Hi, I'm looking for NAS advice. Both myself and my partner work from home. we have several email accounts and documents across both iCloud and Google drive. She stores all of her photos and videos on a local hard drive, currently about 150 GB, and I store all of mine on Google drive about 150gb. We are looking for a home nas solution where we each have a separate account also have a shared photos and videos account that we can both copy into and both read from - obviously I would like to remove any duplication. I think we would keep our existing cloud facilities as backups. We would like the the naz solution perhaps to have a backup. And we are looking for recommendations!

Hi There. I'm a huge fan of how easy Time Machine's backup feature works with our Time Capsule and would love to implement a similar (easy yet reliable) approach to backing up our QNAP data to BackBlaze's B2 cloud..... which we would then incorporate in furtherance of a 3-2-1 strategy for our Macbooks.

As of now our desire is to have the following from a 3-2-1 perspective:

3 Copies: We intend to keep copies of our data on our Macbooks, on the QNAP, and on the BackBlaze B2 cloud.
2 Backups: Macbooks will backup (using Time Machine rotate feature) to both to the QNAP and to our Time Capsule.
1 Off-Site: We will use BackBlaze B2.

The question is what is the best way to get the time machine backups and other data from the QNAP onto BackBlaze B2?

We have researched and considered replication, syncing, disk cacheing, snapshots, and traditional backups (including full, incremental, and differential). Despite this we remain unsure re: which approach (or approaches) would be best for us whilst maximizing data safety AND minimizing B2's costs. In case you're wondering, B2 has a simplified cost structure: $5/TB for storage; $10/TB for downloads; Uploads are free.

I have watched 25+ videos on the above topics and as an old school IT software guy, feel that I understand the differences. The problem is that I still don't know which approach or combination of approaches are best for us. Can you help?

Really need help please, new to RAID, got a Qnap TS-653D on order which I will have 4x 10tb red plus from start, another 2 the same later when I have the money.
90% of this NAS will be for Plex, 2-3 users running 720 and/or 1080 same time. The NAS will be running SABnzbd and Sonarr/Radarr 24/7, and apart from that I will not touch it.
Been told raid 5, 6 or 10, most say 10 as faster, but no idea how faster and if the 5 or 6 is fast enough. Going down to 50% capacity total on raid 10 don’t bother me. I’m edging towards 10 as so many people have said don’t do raid 5 cause parity will take over a day to fix the broken drive and often makes others fail same time so I lose the lot. I will have around 4-5000 movies, several hundred tv series and a few hundred thousand songs. Please let me know what’s best, cloud back ups is a no cause of size needed, and external back up would cost too much and would need several, so any and all backups would be within the NAS,

I'm looking to create a personal server to store all of my files on, specifically my photos as they take up the most space.

I have a macbook pro and use Photos. My understanding is that macs store all the files in one location on the mac and the Photos app then accesses them to order and tags them. Is there a way for those files to be stored on a server like a NAS with the Photos app still able to access them so I can maintain my current usage.

Or is the only way to use the applications on the NAS SERVERS like synology.

Was hoping you might be able to recommend not necessarily the best but the most compatible network storage? We have lots of pictures spread everywhere and wanted to consolidate and be able to access wirelessly and from any of our computers. All Microsoft based systems, I have purchased backup drives and it seems those are setup to backup maybe 1 computer and not serve as a server. We have a linksys router with wifi6, so I think the drives have to be fat32 or NTFS. We have a home network with control4 not sure if that tells you anything. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I am looking for some advice on the new QNAP TS-h973AX-32G. I am a video editor and looking for a convenient way to store all my footage and have easy access to everything all the time. I will need to edit footage off the NAS every now and then. This will mainly be to make edits using old footage etc, and transferring new footage to so we can have always on access to it. I will be running it in some kind or raid configuration which I have not decided yet as I am not sure it I will be on the new ZFS system or not, so you can advise on this to please. I will also be running Plex on this NAS.

I was initially looking at the TVS-872XT-i5-16G, but obviously the price difference is quite significant. Are you able to tell me if it is worth spending the extra on the TVS-872XT-i5-16G vs getting the TS-h973AX-32G. Also what is your opinion on their new QUTS system and ZFS? Or do I rather save up some extra cash and rather go for the TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G. Its almost like there is too many options, and its confusing. At the moment I will only be editing through a 1GBE cable until I am able to upgrade everything to 10GBE. I understand both the TVS-872XT-i5-16G & TVS-h1288X-W1250-16G have thunderbolt ports but I probably would not be able to make full use of these purely due to where I would be placing the NAS & due to the fact that there will be 2 editors who need access to it. So having it connected to the network is the best option. I am heavily leaning towards the TS-h973AX-32G, but my main reasoning is the price which is very achievable. however if you feel it would be better to spend the extra cash then I will have to wait a while before I do anything, which obviously is not an ideal situation.

Storage size wise, I will probably use 16TB drives and start off with the minimum required depending on raid config, and get more as time goes on.

I think I have covered all my needs but if you feel you need more info to give your advice then just let me know.

Intent to upgrade . currently have 2TB on the DS214 which is almost full . If i were to upgrade to either one of above two synology NAS

can i run both as independent NAS on the same network with different online access

and if that is not possible , how to migrate data from the 214se to new NAS - ie can the HDD from the 214 se be included in one of the bays on the new NAS .

Hi, I am looking for a good NAS to store my photos and music that totals to 8TB already and increasing. I am currently looking between the Asustor AS6404T and the Synology DS420. Since it is my very first time to purchase and eventually own a NAS, I am confused which would be the best NAS to purchase. I find the Synology more expensive and memory is expandable up to 6gb. As for the Asustor AS6404 is cheaper and memory is expandable or it already comes with an 8gb memory. Since this is my first time to purchase a NAS, I would prefer the one with more flexibility in terms of usage and memory that I find on the Asustor. I also do not have any idea which is better between Synology or Asustor. Thank you very much for your time. I hope I asked the right questions.
