Hello, i've watched your videos and they have been very helpful! I'm a Mac-based video editor on a 2013 MacPro with Gigabit internet, thunderbolt 2.0 and USB 3.o. I will upgrade to a brand new mac pro with thunderbolt 3 sometime within 2 years. I'm wondering if there would be any direct advantage to using a NAS with gigabit ethernet directly connected to my machine and using it as a simple RAID 5? I don't exactly need any of the IOT features of NAS right now but maybe in the future. I am also kind of far from my internet modem and just use Wifi and not wired ethernet. I'm wondering if I'm crazy to buy a NAS? Would a Synology or other NAS be good for me or should I just buy a "dumb" RAID 5? Any ideas would be helpful

Hello,
I have a Synology DS1520 and it is currently backing up to itself via HyperBackup.
I would like to backup the backups to my Drobo 5N2.
I have ample space on the Drobo.
Everything I read says to use rsync. rsync is not supported by Drobo anymore.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Really enjoy your content.

Hi Robbie
I am not a pro IT person like yourself and followed your advice and purchased a TS-251D and have been very happy
I am looking to expand the NAS with some SSD cache and I am confused about the difference between QM2-2P-244A vs QM2-2P-344 cards except that the 344 is slightly more expensive.. :-)
I just want to expand NAS with 1 or 2 SSD's and not bothered about 10GBs RJ45 and confused about the difference between the 244 and 344
Appreciate your feedback if you get chance?
Thanks
Charles

Hi
I'm looking for a Nas storage, that will allow me to easily extend the storage space by adding disks
and if possible white list ip-addresses to allow access.
I currently have two 8tb HDD , but expect to extend over another 2 or 3 disks
I'd like to be able to extend the inital volume when addind disks.
I also want to restrict access, i'm familiar with allowing access with account names and passwords. But my LG tv does not prompt for username & password when accessing a restricted share.
Is it possible to whitelist access based on IP address.
I'm new to this so appreciate the advise
Many Thanks
Andrew

QNAP / Synology / Others? |

Hi, I currently have a QNAP TS412, (probably 10/ 15 years old, all I know is I bought it brand new a long time ago..!), with 2 x Ironwolf 6tb HDD's, (relatively new), and it is working fine, however, it is showing its age with the apps that are available. I am considering upgrading to a new NAS and I have a couple of questions and would like to take your advice please? I have view your great Youtube videos and they are extremely helpful, however, I am having difficulties committing to one specific NAS, I am wavering between a QNAP TS453D or a Synology 920+, then I have just viewed a video on TrueNAS..!!Aarrggh Help, please?
My first question being, are my HDD's, (that are in a RAID configuration in my QNAP where they are mirrored, not too sure which RAID it is?), swappable between QNAP and Synology?
2nd question, I wish to use the NAS for storing family photos, (I would say over 10k and ever increasing), family videos, (current most are 1080p, however, I do have a few 4k and going forward they will all be recorded in 4k), films, (again most are 1080p, however, I do have a few 4k and going forward most will be 4k, PLEX compatible?), and the new NAS will have to be good enough to send 4k, (wifi preferably if possible), to our new smart TV, also, be able for other family members at different locations to view these photos, videos and films.
I like the idea of being able to edit our family videos on a NAS, however, this is not imperative.
The face recognition, to help aid and assist in cataloguing / tagging would be a great benefit to me also.
£600 is towards the top end of my budget, however, a little more I could probably manage to find, if for example a upgrade to RAM would be greatly beneficial.
Which NAS device do you believe would suit my needs best?
Please, please help me..? Thank you in advance. Stay safe and take care, Darren

Hi
I currently have:
A WRT1900ACS router - Notes: Only supports SMB
2 * Western Digital 4 TB SATA 3.5 Hard Drive - Blacks
I am looking for a 4 bay NAS that I can plug into my router and achieve REAL read/write speeds of ~ 300-600 Mbps+. To achieve this I suspect I'd want to be looking at RAID 5.
This is for home usage and I'd like to be able to dump my steam games on this. I'd also like to be able to expand when I can afford 4*(8/10/16/whatever TB) hard drives
First is this possible? Second What's the cheapest NAS + HD combo that'd be able to achieve the speeds I'm looking for?
