  Synology 1520+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello Robbie,

A have a question about the Volumes on Nas.
I have a DS1520+ including 2 Seageate Iron Wolf Pro 16 TB HDD,
2 Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 SSD.
My problem: 2 x 16 TB and i have only 14.6 TB.
What to do?
Should i buy an extra HDD with lower storage to maximise my Volume with SHR Raid.
Is it possible to get my total volume when i buy an 4TB - 10TB HDD?
What tip can you give?

Thanks,
Geert

  Nas?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi! I think I already have a decent idea what I'm about to get, but as it is my first nas it would be nice if someone can confirm what I'm thinking ;-)
Currently I have a wd blue 2tb hdd full of photos and 1 backup which i keep (offline) at my father-in-law. However as space is now running out I'm looking for a new solution where I would like to keep a more up to date backup close by as well as that the current system is run via a hdd docking station which I believe hasn't got the best speeds.

My idea is to get the qnap 453d together with 3 HDDs of 4tb. Together in a raid5 this would be about 8tb of usable space (and keep 1 slot available for future expansion). I would like to allocate most space for the photos, but also (if possible) have a folder where I could put movies & series to stream to my TV.
I could then use my 2 current HDDs for a dedicated off-site backup.

What my questions still are:
Which HDDs to use in the nas - from what I've read it's either WD red plus or a Seagate ironwolf, do you have any preference?
If I want to stream movies from the nas to the TV, what would be the best solution? Place the nas close to the TV so it can connect via HDMI or would it be better to use something like a Chromecast?

Thanks in advance!
Rogier

  2.5gbe?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I just wanted to ask what the point is in a single 2.5gbe port on home routers. My networking knowledge is pretty limited, but i see a lot of home routers only have 1 port for 2.5gbe. if i use my NAS on the 2.5gbe port and the other gigabit port to my laptop, wouldn't my conenction to my pc be a bottleneck and i would only get the same transfer speeds as if i was using 2.5gbe?

I'm asking is because I have a Nas with 2.5gbe(Nimbustor 4) and while i'm using it as is as a media server for plex and storage for my media, i'm also using it to install all my steam games. It's fine as it is. and maybe its a placebo effect but it feels faster than the onboard HDD even if its only on gigabit and I'm planning on building a pcwith a motherboard that has 2.5gbe port trying to take advatage of the additional bandwitdth. But i'm only finding home routers with only 1 2.5gbe port.

  Synology E10M20-T1 + DS1819+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there, I saw this new promotion for the DS1819+ with the E10M20-T1, but no where I could find what the speed that this NAS box with this card can achieve using both NVMEs and the 10Gbe LAN on a 10Gbe network.

What's the speed you can expect using 8 disk drives + 2* NVMes for cache on a 10Gbe network?

Thank you

  DS210j RAM upgrade possible?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,
I would like to upgrade the RAM of my DS210j to give it a bit more power. At the moment it seems to freeze I am guessing due to a lack of RAM.
However, I am not sure if that is possible at all?

So do you know:
- Is it possible to perform a RAM upgrade at all?
- What do I need to check? e.g. Which which CPU would it be possible to do such a RAM upgrade?
- What RAM type would I need to buy?
- What else do I need to consider?

Many thanks for you help and kind regards

  Synology for mac users?

Love your channel. Thanks so much for the in depth reviews.

Need a private cloud solution to back up a family of iphones. I got a DS220J and seems to work, but the web interface is horribly slow for 'moments'. Would the 220+ be sufficient? We have 3 iphones need to back up and would like to access the images/vids on computer which is why a snappy web interface is a must. Must I go with the 720+ or higher ?

I'm a linux hobbyist and don't mind doing techie stuff, but have no time, so I'm leaning toward Synology since it seem to be the most straight forward based on the research I've done.
