DAS for RAID-6 or SHR-2 TYPE CONFIG?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am wanting to invest in an emulator system, which will require 34-40TB of disk space, and to have a local hard drive letter D: in order to install and maintain the games. Having a NAS from someone like Synology obviously will not work, as it would behave as mapped instead of physical drive.

I have a USB-C port on the back of my NVidia graphics card which I could utilize for connection, but I do not have the Thunderbolt 3 that I see in various DAS configurations.

Any ideas on a good manufacturer, and maybe few brands I should be aiming towards? In the past I have settled for a Drobo, which I guess would be fine for just storage without a lot of additional features. This might be okay, but wanted to bounce it off of you for advice, as this is much more of your cup of tea.

Best NAS for home users using apple?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, found your site today and it is the most informative I have been on - well done!
I am moving from an old iMac to 2 macbook pro's for my wife and I. Having had an external drive fail on me this week, we want to get a NAS drive. Key things are; backup and RAID, ability to use Time Machine, stream iTunes library to each mac or speakers (we have sonos), access files when we are not at home, ability to link to iPhones to back up pictures.
Some of the models that seem to jump out to me (but I don't know why Smile )are;
Synology ds218j
WD my cloud EX2 ultra
Drobo 5N2.
I need something that is easy to setup and use. I love gadgets but not clever enough to use them.
Alternatively any suggestions from you.
I'm thinking 2 x 4 or 6 TB to give plenty of capacity.
Hope you can help
Cheers
David Hall

  Choosing DAS for Video Editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there,
I'm a one-man band videomaker and I think NAS will be slower and more expensive. I'm looking at TR-004 now, what are possible alternatives?
And choosing HDDs is there a significant noise difference between 5400 and 7200 drives? I'd go with 5400 to have the peace of mind when this thing is next to me all day.

Thanks!
Dennis
