Synology DS1019+ high SSD Cache usage? |

Following your excellent video's I installed a 256gb nvme in my plex server. Although I have 15tb of storage 80% used. The DSM has never used more than 6% of read only cache. Something has changed since using I've stated using the DVR function with a HDhomerun. Interstingly my cache use has now increased to 145gb used. Anyone know why this has suddenly risen. I thought DSM would only cache files used more than twice.

Hi, I'm a professional photographer and movie junkie using all Mac/Apple ecosystem.
Just moved to a new home with 10GB Ethernet and want to buy a NAS to keep in a storage closet. Need to keep the NAS running quiet and cool. Also trying to modernize and move away from spinning hard drives.
Of my 8-10TB needs, about 4TB are image files ranging from 50MB to 2GB which I'd like fast access to. The rest are media files for deeper storage.
Wondering if it makes sense to go with an all SSD solution? Or a system with SSD for main storage and HDD for Backups and Slower needs?
I was also considering a NAS with Thunderbolt interface for times I wanted to connect directly, but I think with 10GBE I'm going to have plenty of speed. (I'm NOT trying to edit video!)
Would like your current 2021 opinion about QNAP vs Synology. My experience in the past with Synology tech support has been horrible, but with QNAP my experience was excellent.
Thank you very much for your time.

First NAS as a Video Professional: for Back-up and File Sharing? |

Hi @nas ! I'm an animation and video freelancer, and I'm curious to get a 2-bay NAS so that:
1. 2 separate laptops can each have their own more robust and automatic back-up in a centralized location.
2. 2 separate laptops can access and share work files on the NAS
I'm looking at 3 options:
1. Just buy a Hard drive and back-up my laptop every so often (but this doesnt solve problem 2)
2. Buy the Synology DS220J as a more affordable entry-level NAS - From a price point, this is attractive. Will the performance be an issue? My main uses for the NAS will just be Back-up and File Sharing. We probably wont be working on files Directly on the NAS (though that would be nice too, is that only possible on the 220+?)
3. Spring for the extra cash and go with the DS220+ - This is probably my cap in terms of price for now. Is there much difference between the 220+ and the 220J if my concerns are just back-up, file sharing, and file access?

What is flash memory used for? |

I'm planning to purchase a Qnap NAS, but when comparing some of them I see huge difference on terms of flash memory (512MB vs 5GB)
What is this memory used for? Is it crucial to choose a big number here?

Synology transfer speed issues? |

Hello forum, I've recently purchased and configured a Synology DS720+ for music library/streaming in home environment. The NAS is configured with dual WD Red Pro 8tb drives, 2x Samsung 970 pro SSD + 16gb of memory. The NAS is attached directly to a Netgear X6S wireless router (gigabit speed capable) using the included Cat6 cable from Synology. I've configured the storage and added a volume, plus enabled the SSD caching. I've tweaked the SMB setting, disabling transport encryption as described by Synology. Despite all of this, I can only get 1-2 MB/s transfers over the wired network. This is appalling!
By the way, if one googles "Synology transfer speed issue", you will find dozens of links to various blogs, Synology support forum, Reddit forum, Tom's Guid, Anandtech ....blah blah. Apparently this has been a problem for at least a decade from the limited research I have done.
So has anyone come up with a fix????

Hi ,
I am interested in Purchasing a N.A.S Server and I have already Decided on SYNOLOGY ( Mostly Because of user friendly ) .
My uses for this is mainly Media ... I mean that I have a lot of Movies And Tv Shows on PLEX which are very hard to
Find again if lost , I usually buy a New HDD every 3 - 4 years For this purpose ,
My Home setup is all Wired by Ethernet cables 1 GIGABIT connections ( Cat 6 ) and I use Plex on a main Pc
For streaming through my smart TVs , I usually stream 4K movies through Plex on a new Sony smart Tv
and never gets stuck ( Never Freezes ) , I don`t use transcoding and usually stream 1 or 2 TVs at a time
My main question is can a NAS Server like a DS 920 + also Preform the same way ?
and do I need NVME Drives for this purpose ?
So do you think that a DS-920 + will be a enough for a Home entertainment System also for 4K and More ( Like Edited Videos) ??
Thank you .

Hi, I would like to replace my old Netgear Readynas NV +. I need a NAS for photo files and audio files. I will use a SONOS system for listening. I want to be able to use the NAS while I am traveling in my Motorhome so I think SSD is the way to go as HDD will not handle the bumps and vibrations. I dont really need it for video, but if PLEX would be useful for my 1TB music collection I would consider that. I think a 4 bay would be best, but maybe a 2 bay would be sufficient? What NAS would you recommend? Also, if you could recommend a SSD as well. I have looked at the compatibility lists for QNAP and Synology and there are so many drives I dont know how to choose.
Thank you,
Jim

DC Hardwire Question? |

I need to direct hardwire a Synology NAS (DS 920+) to 12 V DC. I need to install it in my motorhome. The 'brick' that Synology provides has 120 V AC input and 12.5 v 5A DC output. So in theory, it should be possible to directly wire it into my 12 v DC system. I believe the brick uses a 5 pin DIN connector to the NAS. Does anyone know what the wiring schematic might be for that connector? Synology does not sell a direct wire kit and there is no doc describing the wiring. I could use an inverter, I know, but that is quite an inefficient way to go. 12 VDC to 120VAC to 12VDC.
Thanks.
