So I have a friend who lives in a country that only has access to the internet through cellular data. His options are limited to Routers that can take a SIM card. He is interested in getting an Asus gaming Router to take advantage of its hardware and software features. The issue is the Asus Router does not have a SIM card slot. Could he potentially use a SIM Card Router like the Nighthawk M6 5G and enable bridge mode then connect it to the Asus router's WAN port to act as a modem? The ROG Rapture GT-BE98 also supports 4G / 5G Auto Mobile Tethering through USB so I am guessing that might work as a backup.

As primarily a PC (all Linux Mint) backup (via rsync of LB & timeshift local backups) destination will any SSD based NAS buy me anything on a 2.5Gbps LAN? If so, is the flashstor 6 my best bet or a 2-bay with some nvme + SATA SSD drives?

On a bit of a different topic... I had hoped to use Active Backup for Biz on the Synology but found that the client agent only works on older kernels (5.13) effectively killing my hope to do 'pull' backups on the NAS... anybody else have a 'pull' solution that works with Linux clients?

I currently use Dropbox for my small team. We do quite a bit of video work, mostly broadcast with some editing. Currently I have a 30 TB limit at Dropbox and since its not unlimited any more I'm looking at alternatives since I'm full. There's probably quite a bit in there I don't really need, but always left because it didn't matter. We have a couple of locations we work from, where the NAS would be has 1 gig up and 1 gig down. The others are around 250-400 up and down. What direction should I head?

I Need a NAS which can host a couple of light Dockers, Handle 1( Ideally 2) 4K HDR Plex stream + some critical backups (ECC?)

My biggest need is to be as low HEAT as possible as the only place i can put it is the Pantry

Hello. You previously assisted me by suggesting I use Tailscale to access my NAS remotely. I've implemented this, and everything is functioning properly. However, I'm experiencing speed issues when the drive is mapped through the VPN/Tailscale IP (100 etc.). I've attempted to map the drives using the local IP address (192 etc.), and it appears to work faster. I intended to have both mapped so they're ready when I'm away from the home network, but the problem arises when both are mapped—it seems to encounter issues and won't access the NAS, stating it's already in use. Can you provide any advice? My goal is to access it both remotely and locally. I don't mind slower speed remotely, but I want maximum performance locally. Thanks Paul

I would like some advice on buying a NAS replacing my DS214PLAY.
I also have a Qnap on the side only to store but my DS214play was for backup and eventually for virtual machine or dockers (which doesn't work..)

I intend to keep my 2TB in raid 1 in my new NAS (already have the WD red Hdd) and to add what's necessary to manage virtual machines or dockers (like Nvme ssd) : home assistant, jellyfin, qbitorrent, backup app, VPN (if it works).

I saw the 224+ but I'm seeing the limitations of it if I want to have faster access with virtual machines, it seems or would it be sufficient to manage for it? It doesn't seem relevant to have nvme on external USB to manage virtual machines or am I wrong?
M.2 Sata SSD would sufficient instead of M.2 Nvme SSD for my purpose?

I'll have a 2,5GBe grid between my NAS only and one computer, mainly to monthly copy big files.

What would you recommend as a new NAS and with which config for my purpose, please?

Good evening, I am looking into getting a NAS system for the first time after years of frustration with cloud services due to cloud service data caps and subscription costs. I have minimal server/IT experience but am eager to learn the ins and out of NAS. I am hoping to get a system that is capable of secure remote access from my personal laptop and Iphone as well as remote access from family members phones and computers to share and store photo and video data. I hope to still utilize the google suite for file creation and editing (drive primarily for school). I plan on having a dedicated google account for a cloud backup of photos and videos (under 15 GB) and a offline failsafe backup SSD to backup to from the NAS on a monthly basis. I am hoping to understand which brand to go with (Synology or QNAP) to replace cloud photo storage and gain a streamlined remote access via multiple IOS devices. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for the amazing information already.

most my data is film/tv, not massively important, be a bummer to loose it all tho; even if easily replaceable or not worth replacing. would like redundancy. important data is rarer collections: some film/tv, mostly music & books, articles, pdfs, photos etc. likely replaceable if it came to it, but just losing it would make some of it unlikely to be recovered due to forgetting what its called. the critical, i say less than 1tb but its likely half that even. itd be all personally created documents, files, photos, videos, music etc. currently running a 4th gen I5 tower w/ 16gb ddr3. as soon as i copy data to a 8tb hdd and my c: drive to a new 2tb nvme, ill be swapping to a gen 8 i7 with 32gb ddr4. ill hopefully be bringing along a 4tb hdd, 4tb ssd, 1tbssd and have everything runnin much more efficiently. i currently watch most of that content on a regular flatscreen (not-smart) i have limited internet and dont expect that to change, using ps3, micca or comp. limited on space and money

I have a Drobo 5N2 with a 256GB mSata containing 5 ea, 4TB WD Red drives configured with double redundancy giving me 10.84TB usable with about 1TB being used. I use it for music access via a Naim Unitiserve over the network and for photography backup. The 5N2 was bought in 2018 to replace a Drobo FS that failed after 6 years and that is when the WD Red drives were added also. After seeing your YouTube video about Drobo going Chapter 11 I think I better start looking for a replacement. I access it over a home 1GB CAT-5 network. It has worked well this +5 years but I don't want to be stuck if it decides to fail like the FS did.

My desire is to get a NAS setup that is faster than the 80-100MB/sec I currently get. Is that possible with my 1GB CAT-5 network? I also have an Apple Studio Ultra that makes the NAS painful to use for photo access. Maybe get a reasonably prices NAS for music access and photo backup then use a DAS for photography access?
