  Using WD Red & Ironwolf Pro together
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-11-2024, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

G'Day

I have purchased a Synology DS1522+ with 2 x 12tb Ironwolf pro HDD. Still waiting for it to arrive. In the meantime, I'd like to ask if when setting it up, I can also add 2 x 10tb WD Red drives to increase the capacity. The drives were bought a few years back, but were never installed for use. Are the 2 types of drives able to be installed together, and will it cause any problems?

Cheers

  Rural Home network
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-11-2024, 04:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I live in a rural brick home with Starlink internet. I plan to run 2 Ethernet ports in 7 rooms within 1 month. I want to have internet in my workshop 50 yards away.
1. What Ethernet cable, CAT5e or CAT6?
2. Managed or unmanaged network? Brand?
3. Starlink router or new router?

  Seeking Advice on External DAS Storage Replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-10-2024, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I greatly appreciate your insightful videos and reviews on YouTube. I'm currently in the market for a reliable storage solution to replace my aging Drobo devices ("Drobo S" and "Drobo 5D&quotWink.

Ideally, I'm seeking a 5/6 bay system that can function as a DAS device via Thunderbolt, akin to Drobo's beyond RAID system. While I've come across unboxings of QNAP, Promise, and Terramaster DAS systems, there seems to be a shortage of comprehensive reviews and comparisons.

Your expertise would be invaluable in guiding my decision. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

  Drive tray stuck
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-10-2024, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have just purchased a new DS1522+ and prior to permanently setting it up was running through various tutorials. I removed a drive tray and drive to simulate a drive failure intending to check the process through. This is when things went wrong.

Having removed the drive from the tray I pushed the tray back in but had not refitted the drive securing strips, the drive tray went too far in and it now firmly stuck. I can now see drive securing strips hit a couple of raised lugs in the back of the DS to stop this happening.

Has anyone else been this daft and sorted it out. I guess I can probably cut through the tray and release it but that is far from my plan.

Any good ideas welcomed, I don't need beating up about this, I have already beat myself up enough.

Thanks
Steve

  Can someone advise a QNAP replace for a Synology
Posted by: richtheace - 01-10-2024, 04:11 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I'm seeking advice on finding a suitable QNAP replacement for my current setup:
* Synology DS1522+ with a DX517.
* Fitted with 1 x 2.5" SSD.
* 2 x NVMe.
* 9 x 3.5" HDD in RAID 6.
* 10Gb NIC.

* My software setup includes running; Win 10 in a VM (JUST for Amazon photo backup).
* Radarr, Sonarr, with a VPN in a Synology VM
* DS Audio (for music in the car).
* Jellyfin.
* DS Cam
* DS Photo (AKA Photos, for iPhone photo/video backup).

I also have my USB label printer connected, with the Synology acting as a print server.
I've been told that this print server function might not work well on QNAP.

Furthermore, I've upgraded the RAM myself and encountered an error message about non-Synology recommended memory modules. Despite running a memory check that returned all fine after a test, I keep getting a 'Checksum mismatch' on Synology even with new drives. Additionally, Jellyfin struggles with on-the-fly hardware re-encoding.
This was not a cheap unit, and I've also lost the Seagate extra testing option.

I've been eyeing the 16-Bay QNAP models, specifically the TS-1655, which fits my budget. It comes with 2 x NVMe, 4 x 2.5", and 12 x 3.5", & 2.5Gb NIC.

I appreciate any recommendations for a QNAP unit that would suit my needs. Can someone also confirm if adding an Nvidia 1650TI for enhanced graphical capabilities, especially with Jellyfin, is feasible?

I fell a little dishearten with Synology as I've been with them years coming from 1 Bay models, to 2, 4, 5, 8, and now with the expansion unit 10 bays and I fell they are dropping the ball for price to performance/features.

Looking forward to your valuable input!

Cheers Rich

  new hard drive
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-10-2024, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I have been running at home a synology DS918+ for several years already, but I need more space and I want to replace the 4 drives in it before they start giving problems. My question is, which new drives would you recommend me to buy for home use? I need each drive to be 18-20TB at least, and I would like them to be quiet. Money budget should not be an issue and I do not need the best performance. Thank you very much for your advice.

  NAS for 4k Video Editing and Storage...
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-10-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I spoke to a rep at QNap and he recommended the TS-855X for Storing and editing 4k video from Lumix S5 and Black Magic Cameras. Much of my video will be 1080, 10 bit as well from the Black Magic ATEM Extreme ISO.

Also being considered is the QNAP TS-h973AX-32G 9-Bay QuTS Hero NAS with 10GbE/2.5GbE. Alex Pettitt of the UK is using this model with success.

Not sure about the Asustor Models.

Your thoughts?

Thank you in advance!

  Terramaster RAM

I just bought a terramaster f4 423 and I want to put a RAM chip in it but I’m unsure what is compatible. Their site recommends only their RAM and it costs way too much. Would you know one that works? I am looking to put 16Gb. Thank you in advance for any recommendations you can provide

  NAS for Mac

I have a PC that I have built and am currently using as a Plex server. I would like to expand to a NAS to be able to back up files on my various Mac devices. There may be a way to do this now but I don't know how to do it.

Thanks so much for your help! I really enjoy your channel.
