I'm a photographer and just want large storage (25tb+) with the fastest connection possible so i can edit direct from a DAS while still having redundancy. Is there any DAS or similar you could recommend. I use a windows pc and any help is greatly appreciated.

I am a newbie that is super confused and frustrated. I have already setup up my NAS but the process is not going smoothly and I feel like the more I try to research how to fix things the more complicated and overwhelming all the technical details are getting.

To Start - I setup a Qnap TS-464-8G-US with 2 seagate exos 20TB drives. I am using this set up with Jellyfin just for a home media server for my movies and photos. My process is basically to use MakeMKV to create a MKV file of my movies and put them directly to my NAS with no handbrake compression. I did the basic setup straight off of Robbie's Qnap and Jellyfin set up videos and that part went splendidly. But I now have 3 really big follow up problems/slash questions. I have tried to research these issues but it's like going down a rabbit hole of technical details I can not mentally process. I am not trying to become a tech wizard. I just want to stream my own movies instead of paying Amazon $4.99 every time I want to watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off! 

1 - This part I might have frakked up. After I had uploaded 3 MKV files and the system acquired all the meta data files I saw they were all just jumbled together so I tried to organize the movies using different folders for my movie categories. Then the next day they were all moved around and it took a minute to find but it looks like they got put into snapshot folders. I deleted all the folders and files I made and tried to reload the movies but they still keep moving to snapshot folders. 
1Q - Can someone please link me to a video about how to Organize the files in Qnap File Station and how to keep snapshot from moving them around?

2 - I think this is related to the snapshot issue but Jellyfin is also duplicating the movies in the main movie window. I created collection folders and the movies are NOT duplicating in there. But it looks like everyday a new snapshot is created a new duplicate movie icon appears in the main movie folder. Sometimes I can delete the duplicates and sometimes the system will not let me. I can't go through and delete endless duplicates every time I open Jellyfin. Especially once I get hundreds of movies in there. 
2Q - How can I stop Jellyfin from duplicating movie icons? Is it related to snapshot? Do I need to turn Snapshot off?

3 - This part is question and recommendation request. So after I ripped my 3rd movie my external disk drive decided to crap out on me. I grabbed another basic Bluray read and write drive from Amazon but it wont open any of my disks now. When I try to open them in MakeMKV it just keeps failing. I've tried with an old version and the current version of MakeMKV but it just wont do it. I tried to look this up too but the variables are so vast that I couldn't hone in on a good answer. In fact I came across a whole new thing about flashing drives? I've never even heard fo that before.
3Q - Do I need a specific type of drive to open Blurays in MakeMKV? Is there a difference in older drives that works better? What the heck is flashing a drive and do I need to worry about that?

My main uses are file sharing, and video surveillance. Also, I want to keep my photos on the NAS and hoping that there is some nice software to categorize my photos without my help. I want a fluent use of searching files and manipulating them. Audio and video will only be used sporadic, so not that important.
I want to connect 4 to 8 cameras on the system for outdoor use. Are there systems that are able to close a contact to a home automation system when there is movement in certain areas?

I am planning to buy a DS224+ NAS. I already have couple of hard disks from my previous device ie., QNAP TS-251

ST2000DM001-1ER164 is the model from Seagate. However I would like to know if this is compatible with the DS224+ before making the purchase decision.

The compatibility page from Synology doesnt list this hardisk. However I do not want to waste this as its in very good condition and its 7200 rpm and not to waste money.

Is it ideal to use this HDD on a new DS224+.

Also another question if I may, Going full SSD on DS224+ is it possible. I reckon SSD could be used just as an additional cache on top of a HDD. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hello and thank you for your videos, I'm in the process of building my first home made NAS ( I already own a fully functional Synology DS920+) and as a guide I watched your 100k sub video (https://youtu.be/C6hf3ddtNCs?si=yW-nY6dSLYJxqLzt) , my system will be : motherboard Celeron N5105, RAM 32gb, M.2 SSD 500gb for the OS (second M.2 slot will have SATA x 6 expansion card). Are Seagate EXOS model ST16000NM001G or ST16000NM000J compatible with this build ? I would like to put Exos in this system since they have lower price than Ironwolf for the same amount of storage space and from what I understand they have better performance and are more quiet.

After much consideration, I've decided to dive into the world of Plex and NAS to organize and access my 4K UHD Blu-ray collection both at home and remotely. Following extensive research, I've opted for the QNAP TS-464, accompanied by two NVMe SSDs and HDDs. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of all the equipment.

This is my first time setting up a NAS, and it would primarily be for Plex use. Here is my current plan:

1. Install only the two NVMe SSDs for the initial QNAP and Plex setup, ensuring the OS and Plex reside on the SSDs.
2. Integrate the two HDDs into RAID 1, establishing a new pool and volume for storing movies and TV shows.
While going through the provided security checklist, I got a little confused. I'm seeking guidance, particularly in my situation where the QNAP will be exclusively used for Plex. Some specific questions include:

Is it necessary to create a non-admin user with read-only privileges for Plex?
Which port(s) should be closed or modified for optimal Plex performance?
Should I still implement SSL encryption for a Plex setup?
As someone who is tech illiterate, I want to ensure that I'm on the right track. Any step-by-step guidance or checklist tailored to my situation would be immensely appreciated.

Hi, I'm looking to buy my first NAS. I've been researching for months now but feel I'm still miles away from being informed enough to choose a NAS on my own. It's for personal/family use (max 6 persons using it). Main purpose will be file storage from phones/laptops and accessing files (mostly docs&photos) remotely. I also want to invest in good streaming capabilities. A simple, usable interface will be key for me. Surveillance and AI photo sorting not necessary. Futureproofing is my main issue - I don't want to regret e.g. being left behind on the M.2/NVME train - but I'm not sure where the sweet spot between futureproofing and overspending lies for me. Love the channel and the site - any help you can offer would be much appreciated!

I have a WDMirror and it sucks. I have an Apple IOS household with about 15 devices from iPads, iPhones, iMacs, MacBook pros…etc. I am a UX Designer so interface is important to me over hardware upgrades and such. I need a place to store family photos and videos, ideally they would be accessible outside, personal cloud. I use Google Home so integration with Nest cameras would be nice, if I could store my own home video and have the software keep it for 30days then delete (this is not a priority). I do want easy to use easy to access with web interface and Apps… also Tech support that is not in India would be outstanding.

I've been thinking of setting up a NAS, I work in IT, but couldn't get into the hardware part so far.
Now my father really wants to get away from cloud solutions, family(5) is using for photos/docs.
I watched hours of your videos (2x speed, thanks for all the infos ) and I think I narrowed it down to the 1522+, so we are future proof and I can also use it for Docker / VM projects (opt).
Now he just mentioned he would also like to include movies (plex or..) and now I am a bit worried if my choice is still valid.
I watched comparisons that showed that .264 / 1080? is fine, but as soon as you go 4k (or remote) it can be difficult with just the CPU, especially if there are multiple people using it. No real exp here:/
Can you please help me verify my choice or should I switch to GPU integrated =423+ or is there other options? I think it should stay synology with the apps for ez family use?
And also what Disk size would you say to start with? 2x12-16tb?

Hi, I just watched your very informative video on the Samsung T9 which answered a few questions and raised a few others! Intel etc have made all this incredibly complicated these days. 

I am in the process of upgrading to a Mac Studio (M2 Max) for music production and require an extensive array of SSDs for audio/sample/archive purposes. The sample drive needs to be as quick as possible as it reads huge libraries. It would be directly connected to one of the ports defined by Apple as:

Four Thunderbolt 4 ports with support for:
Thunderbolt 4 (up to 40Gb/s) 
DisplayPort 
USB 4 (up to 40Gb/s) 
USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)

This implies that the port does not support 3.2 gen2x2 though I may be wrong? In which case as per your video the T9 would not perform adequately. Are you able to clarify? This would be a shame as I would prefer something off the shelf and reliable. 

I have explored enclosures with a Samsung internal drive but they made me slightly uneasy given that so many were reporting wildy different speeds, heat issues, deceleration, and the long term reliability/durability is unknown. Maybe I have to go back to this option though. In which case can you recommend a reliable enclosure?
