Large Single Volume vs multi volume |

Hi,
Getting close to running out of capacity on my Asustor NAS, I decided to upgrade my 3× Ironwolf 10TB to 3× WD Red 22TB drives. I have swapped them all out and synchronised and now am at the stage of "Expand Capacity".
My question is, what is best; multiple volumes or one large single volume?
Current volume 18TB, 16TB used. I am aware that volume size can't be reduced once expanded. I am also not sure what happens when I click esxpand capacity, whether i get the option to chose volume size, or it is grabs everything remaining.
Advice would be appreciated.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

Imporance of hardware vs software for photo/video viewing on mobile phone |

Dear Robbie,
I've watched many of your videos and I really learned a lot about my NAS purchase decision.
However, I'm still doubting between DS224+ or TS262 (or TS462, which is only 30 euros more expensive here). I also watched your comparison video.
My wishes: NAS on local LAN, it should provide a smooth and fast experience particularly for viewing photos in large (1000+ photos) folders, and playing 4k videos.
I currently own a TS233 which has issues: very slow thumbnail generation, very slow photo/video viewing, and some software issues which seem to be solved with app updates now.
Now, should a big hardware upgrade (TS262 > TS233) solve these problems? Or would a software-'upgrade' help, to DS224+ with only slightly better hardware than TS233?
I noticed both Synology and QNAP mobile apps have very poor ratings, but both regularly updated, and your comparisons on mobile apps suggest both provide smooth experience.
Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Drobo 5D3 |

Hi, we have had a 5D3 for a few years now but realise we have to change. We currently use our Drobo for archive storage of completed work - this is then backed up to Backblaze online storage.
In replacing the Drobo I am looking for something that is "Direct" attached - not NAS. Mainly for simplicity and the fact that Backblaze does not support NAS backup which would mean I'd then need another enclosure which I'd rather not have.
I realise you are a NAS website but just wondered if you had any recommendations regarding DAS?
We currently have 3x6TB and 2x3TB in the Drobo and they are about 80% full due to the protection loss.
I'm aware of the QNAP TR004, but is there anything you can use with mismatched drives?
Also, is there anything where, like Drobo, you can remove one drive and put a bigger one in to expand storage, without having to replace all drives at the same time?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's a rabbit hole and its doing my head in!
Cheers, Darryl

Which Nas? |

Hey,
Been watching your videos on youtube. They have been very helpful to figure out which NAS I need.
I have 2 libraries of photos, one personal, one an archive of photos from 1950 to 1990. These need to remain separate so that I can use the AI recognition function for object or facial recognition. Its important to me to be able to search by faces for example, of me on one library, and on the photo archive, be able to do research by finding the same person in multiple photos across multiple years.
Also, I need a way to add/edit metadata on the photos. The archive is all scanned and will need to have metadata added to the albums manually (for example, date, location, names of people in photo etc).
We have also digitized hundreds of reel to reel (audio) and VHS video recordings and want manage files and the meta data accordingly. Is there an app like Itunes to organize them?
We hope to be able to share these files once they are organized.
Thanks again!

Greetings, I'm a long time viewer of the channel and would love to utilize your affiliate links to make my first foray into the NAS world. I'm considering something like the DS923+ but wanted to sanity check via your handy advice form here on your website. I self host plex on my personal machine, currently sitting around 20TB of internal data, but I've also dabbled in hosting project files for myself and my peers. I'm in entertainment (animation / vfx / games) and am likely going to need to expand my local storage for a few personal projects with friends. As of right now if I just offload my plex from my personal computer to a NAS that would be fine, I could host our project files on my local machine, but it would be advantageous to build something out that I could sync to a friends house in a mirrored setup (assuming projects go well haha). I have a modest 12u rack where my pc and some other peripherals are hosted, I'd considered a rack mounted NAS but they're pricey!

Using >16TB drives in a Synology DS1821+ |

I have a Synology DS1821+ that is full of 14TB drives... they had the best $/TB at the time that I was populating it.
I now need to increase the capacity of the NAS box but the largest drives - other than the very expensive Synology ones - that are compatible are 16TB and that's just too small a change for the cost.
I'd like to start replacing the 14TB drives with either 18TB or 20TB, using WD Red Pro devices, but I'm concerned that they are considered to be 'incompatible' by Synology.
My (basic) questions are:
1. Am I at risk of having issues with the WD drives?
2. Is Synology likely to update their compatibility lists at some (reasonable) time in the future?
[The 14TB drives that are replaced will go into a DS920+ that I also have that currently uses 10TB drives... I'm not a big fan of the expansion chassis available from Synology...]
