Trying to decide whether to build or buy a new nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-07-2023, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I’m running a DS220+ with two 16TB ironwolf pro hdds, I have another 16TB, 12 TB and 6TB ironwolf hdds lying around. The main use of my current nas is for Plex and ideally I’d like to get to 6 bays so I can fully utilise my hdds and future proof my storage needs. Am I better off building or buying a new nas? Any of the newer synology nas products use ryzen cpu so would be unsuitable for hw transcoding. A 1621+ could set me back €1,000 and I’d end up buying something else to run Plex on. Wondering what my best options would be?

Are you really sure that all capacity of 16 GB RAM module is 100% usable by CPU J4125 which support 8GB max.?

Thank you

Synology for hosting my own webpage
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-05-2023, 05:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greetings,

I have been watching your YouTube for a while, a big fan.
I do have two Synologys (DS718+ and DS220j). I use 718 for my live system and the 220 for my backups of 718 (weekly).

I have my own webpage (coded by myself) that is currently running on GoDaddy.

Was thinking of hosting my website on a Synology. Advisable? Any good options?

Synology compatibility list includes no 3rd party drives, HDD or SSD for my newly purchased DS223. I recall your review suggesting that this would not be the case. \\can you recommend any suitable drives? Especially 2tb SSD.
Thanks

  4kn HDD SHR-1 conversion to SHR-2
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-04-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Love your sight - I became aware of it in the UK when I was there a few years ago and it is the reason I went for a Synoloyg NAS 920+. I started with 2 WD Red Pro 6TB drives and then went to a 3rd using SHR-1. I finally went for a 4th but cannot get the 6TB so went for the 8TB. Ultimately I wanted to switch to SHR-2 because I also use it for my photos in addition to Time Machine backup. (The NAS is additionally backed up to a fire-proofed HD via HuperBackup via USB because I am anal about my pictures. The dilemma is the warning about not having a 4kn HDD to use the SHR-2 conversion. I have seen things about the WD "Hugo" program to convert the drives but I have a MAC. So, is this conversion possible or do I now have a 4 drive system with only a one drive back-up?

Thanks in advance.

  NAS Drives and additional storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-03-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

HI, I have a DS920+, and with black friday coming up, I want to get drives for it so that I can use it as a personal storage drive (like dropbox) and also as a Plex server.
I was thinking that I am best to have 4 drives that are at lest 8tb.
There are also two additional storage/memory drives on the bottom of the NAS.

My questions are:
1. What drives do you recommend? (I have seen WD Red, red plus, red pro, and seagate ironwolf, iron wolf pro, and ironwolf pro nas).
2. What amount of storage should I have for the Plex server use? Is 32 TB enough, or should it be higher?
3. It is necessary for me to get SSDs for the NAS (slots on the bottom), what is the pro/con for them?
4. Is there any info or video on how to run/maintain a plex server.....I am pretty new to this.

thanks in advance for your help!
