Hi. I am about to setup my qnap ts-855x and I see QNAP are saying this for their ZFS system.. does it really work like tiered storage?

Hi all! I have been going back and forth on which NAS device I want to purchase and just can't seem to make up my mind. I'm tossed between the TerraMaster F2-212 and the Asustor Drivestor 2 AS1102T. I run Linux on my 2 machines and my partner uses a Mac mini. I'm also kind of wondering about the F2-210, because of its solid build. I'm only using it as a backup, no server apps will be used.
I see that the Terra Master distinctly mentioned that it supports Linux, but does that matter in my case?
What can you add to help me choose? I've been going back and forth for a week now and still can't decide. Thank you so much for any help you can give! Kyle

  Western digital 4TB SD card
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-18-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Western digital will be releasing a 4TB Sd card in 2025, you can Google this…

My question, could you or would it be possible to populate a NAS with some sort of adapter with these SD cards?

What would the performance be like in a RAID

The price point may be cheaper than 4TB NVME drives… When compared to HDD’s there would be less noise, heat , power consumption.

I may be be completely of my rocker and this is the dumbest question…

Just finished watching the review of the 24TB Seagate and thought of this..

  My first Nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-17-2024, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I plan to buy my first NAS to replace my expiring WD My Cloud. It will mostly be used to centralize and back up all our media from our different devices. I think I will go with the QNAP TS-233. You made a great review of this one, and the AI for photos looks attractive to me, and the fact that they are powerful enough to be used as a Plex server is a plus for me.

I have two questions: Is it worth the extra money to wait and get the new TS-216G? Secondly, for the same performance with Synology, it seems I need to go with the DS224+, which is twice the price. Is their software really that much better? As my first NAS, I really look for simplicity. Will QNAP do the job, or should I really put more importance on the software and then go with Synology?

Thanks for your advice.

Marc

  GPhotos to NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-17-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi!

i have watched a lot of your videos and you have done one about google photos, but there has not been one to completely migrate from GPhotos. I have scoured the internet and found a couple of things but without a full fledged solution, i have even paid for a service and got nowhere!
the main issue lies with Google's terrible way of extracting the metadata and exif data from the picture and when performing a GTakeout, it puts everything in a JSON file. Now i have used https://metadatafixer.com/, tried and failed with https://gilesknap.github.io/gphotos-sync/main/tutorials/installation.html , and a couple others. is there something that you can do and see for a good solution that you would recommend and make a video about?

anyway, let me know what you think...

Time to upgrade a Syn 416Play
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-17-2024, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Home server is currently in read-only mode and possibly dying :-( Synology 416Play with 8Gb RAM and is looking like it might need an upgrade.
Usage is currently for personal photo/music/data storage and GDrive Sync. Video Editing/Work archive and also running Docker with sonarr/radarr/jaket etc.
Very happy building/config my own and thinking it might be time to move into the TrueNasScale ZFS world.
Have a pi running Kodi for media playing, so not looking for Plex. but it will live in the living room, so should be quiet. Would love to start moving to a 10Gb option (but would mean an upgraded switch).
Very open to options!

  Hyper backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-16-2024, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I got my ds923+ from your recommendation and I couldn’t be happier, thank you

I wanna buy a second one to clone the 923

Hyper backup has an option to backup the entire system to another nas.

I’m assuming that includes my vm’s and docker container s

As it’s just a backup, I don’t need all the bells and whistles.
Can the DiskStation DS124 be sufficient for this task?

  Which 2 Bay NAS 2024
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-16-2024, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I hope you are doing well.

Since all the prices of services are going up, I would like to build me a NAS to use mainly with Plex (4K ) and probably my photos on the future in order to reduce costs with google and streaming services.

Now that terra master launched the F2-424 in Europe, I wonder if it is the best solution since the hardware seems better than Synology , asustor and QNAP ( taking in account the two bays and same target group for this NAS).

I wonder which would be the best choice for me in April 2024, since we need to take into account the quality of the build, the hardware, the software and prices, since I'm new in NAS world, im kinda lost and I would love your help.

thank you for the amazing site and YouTube channels =)

best regards

  Which NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-16-2024, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I am in 2 minds as to what NAS i should buy. Currently I have a 5 bay Synology NAS, that's quite old and no longer in support from it's current DSM version. DS1512 or something like that. I primarily use it for Backup and Plex. I was using Kodi in the past, but it became unusable in it's latest iteration. When switching to Plex, it is a good experience, but it is quite slow rendering the thumb tabs for shows etc. I dare not add my music collection / photos as I feel it's already a bit slow. So time to upgrade.

Primarily want a fast 4k media option, backup and if possible somewhere i can put Retropie?

I have my eye on either QNAP or Synology, either 5 or 6 bay, with potentially nvme drives (if QNAP). Expandable RAM if possible. What would you advise?

I already have the disks, sitting in my old NAS which I will have to migrate across (pain)

THANKS
