Should I Upgrade? And what about SHR?

#1
Hi!

I love your Youtube channel. I have a 1817+ with 80 TB storage (26 TB used) in SHR-2. My data is work-related backups, important personal info, photos (amateur photographer), and digital media. My HHDs are WD RED Pros, 14-16GB each. RAM is 16GB. Internet is 1GB/s.

A couple questions:
- If the 1823xs+ doesn't support SHR, what should I do?
- When moving data from my laptop to my NAS, 20% of the time it gives an error and I have to re-copy. Especially large files or ones with many sub-files. How do I make it smoother. Transfer rate is ~45-60MB/s.
- Will upgrading to this newer version be much faster?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out! It's correct that the DS1823xs+ doesn't support SHR, but you can still use regular RAID5 or another RAID configuration that suits your needs.

Regarding the file transfer failures, mapping the drive and using it as a USB drive is a good option, as it can be faster and more reliable. It's also recommended to use LAN instead of Wi-Fi for faster and more stable transfers.

Upgrading to a newer NAS could potentially be faster if you use a 10GbE port, but otherwise, the transfer speeds may not be significantly faster than your current setup.

I hope that helps!
