Need Help getting Plex Hardware Transcoding to work with Asustor AS6706T NAS

#1
Hello Robbie,

I message you because i need help getting the Plex hardware transcoding to work with my NAS, the Asustor AS6706T.

The NAS has the Intel Celeron N5105 CPU, which supports the Quick Sync standard. My goal (and a big reason why i got this NAS) is to use the iGPU to transcode my media, when i´m outside my LAN and want to watch a movie on my mobile phone.

First i installed the Plex Media Server via the App Central of Asustor. I have a Plex Pass and enabled the hardware transcoding in the settings. But when i watch a movie on my phone and change the resolution, the CPU goes to a 100% and it does not use the iGPU to transcode.

After this, i installed Plex via a docker container, because i thought it would work this way. But unfortunately to this day, i´m still unable to use the iGPU for harware transcoding. It always says transcoding (without the "hw" behind it).

I also made a post on reddit: https://old.reddit.com/r/asustor/comments/xmr6u0/asustor_as6706t_plex_hardware_transcoding_not/

There is a little info on my docker compose file.

Maybe you can help me out, because you test a lot of NAS devices with Plex and their harware transcoding capabilities.

Greetings from Germany and thank you very much.

I would recommend trying a different kind of videos - H264, h265, MKV , MP4 and see if there is a difference. Built in QuickSync has limitations and not all files can be transcoded on the fly. Some need to be done using offline transcoding.
Or if the transcoding driver is actually not being utilised, maybe try this guide https://nascompares.com/guide/synology-d...and-ds420/
It is for Synology, but it should also work on Asustor.

I hope this helps.
