SHR # of Discs?

#1
I have a synology DS420+ with 2 -12TB discs & 2 - 8 TB discs. How many should I use in an SHR setup? Two and 2 for redundancy, 3 and one for redundancy or all 4? I'm a first timer at this. Also, in order to setup everything , I had to disable my VPN and firewalls, once I'm set up I can re-enable them correct or do I need to add the synology .com site to the list of sites that can go thru the firewall, thx!

One drive redundancy is a good enough solution for the home. You will get most of the storage space if you chose the SHR1 option. You can play with configuration options here: https://www.synology.com/en-uk/support/RAID_calculator?hdds=8%20TB|8%20TB|12%20TB|12%20TBI hope this helps.
