Ugreen backup

#1
Desperate for advice on this back-up problem. Took your advice and wow did I watch plenty of nas videos...settled for the Ugreen 4 bay plus. Actually, it's pretty friendly to a none nas user.

Problem, how do I back it up. I think in time I should buy the smaller 2 bay Ugreen Nas as a bck up solution but for now, I need a cheap 'get out of jail free' backup to tied me over.

I have a spare pc, but cant seem to work out how to connect it to the Nas, if it's even possible..

Am I looking at a cheap usb drive for now and how big ? My 4, 4 tb drives equate to about 10tb of Nas storage so what size usb backup would I need.

Sorry if my question is daft, buty as a complete nas newbie I am finding it a tad confusing.

Thanks, keep those vids coming, love the straight forward British chat, makes me smile.

You have a few workable options.

First, a simple USB backup drive. This is the easiest short term fix. If your Ugreen array gives you roughly ten terabytes of usable space, you want a USB drive that is at least that size so you can take a full copy. A twelve or fourteen terabyte USB external drive is the safest pick. You plug it into the Ugreen, create a scheduled backup task, and let it run in the background. For a temporary safety net this is perfect.

Second, your spare PC can be used, but only if you set it up as a network share. The Ugreen cannot mount a bare Windows machine like a drive. You would need to create a shared folder on the PC, give it a fixed IP on your network, then point the Ugreen backup tool to that share. It works, but it is more fiddly than using USB.

Third, long term, your idea of getting a second small Ugreen NAS as a backup target is spot on. That gives you proper NAS to NAS backup with scheduling and versioning. Until then, the USB drive is the cheapest and most reliable get out of jail option.
