Plex server upgrade

#1
I've got a DS920+ which is now full so 4 drives + a USB drive.
I need a new NAS but happy to keep the 920+ running as is so looking at another 4 bay so either QNAP TS-8G or Asustor L4 Gen 2 AS6704T

So my question is can i buy 1 of them and share the new drives with synology (DSM 7.2) so i can just add them to my existing plex server or will i have to build a 2nd plex server and add it to my plex profile?

You can definitely add another NAS (like the QNAP TS-8G or Asustor L4 Gen 2 AS6704T) to your setup and integrate it with your existing Plex server on the DS920+, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

Sharing Drives Between NAS Units:

Synology NAS (like your DS920+) uses its own DSM system and won't directly share drives with a non-Synology NAS (like a QNAP or Asustor). However, you can map network drives or create a shared folder between the two NAS systems over your local network.
This allows you to store content on the new NAS and have it available for Plex on your DS920+, but the drives themselves won’t be directly "shared." You'll have to point Plex to the new network shares for media access.
Plex Setup:

You won’t need to build a second Plex server. You can add the new NAS as additional storage in your existing Plex profile. When you point Plex to the new drives or shared folders on the new NAS, it will recognize the content and allow you to stream it seamlessly, just like with your current setup.
Network Considerations:

Ensure that both NAS units are on the same local network, ideally connected to a gigabit or higher switch to ensure smooth data transfer speeds.
Plex will treat media libraries from both NAS units as part of your unified library, as long as the content is properly mapped.
In summary, you can add the new NAS to your Plex server without building a second one. Just make sure your network setup supports the data flow between the two, and you'll be able to add media from the new NAS to your Plex library seamlessly.
