Hi,
I have a TS-410 Qnap with 16 Tb drives. Was hit with deadbolt have my photos, music and videos backed up.
Now qnap only has 256 mb memory, so I am looking to build a small nas with trueness or freenas as my OS.

If you need something really cheap, you may consider Unraid. You can install it on any old computer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9n4hMFBqvo
If you go for TrueNAS, you will need to invest in decent hardware to run it. You will not be saving money nor the time maintaining it.
The best budget option will be Synology J series such as DS420J. It is cheap, secure and reliable.
